My 2000 Evinrude 225 FFI engine name plate calls for a 7712 spark plug which Champion makes and is available. Every other source of information under the sun says use a QC12PEP plug. Are these identical plugs? Which is better for the 225 FICHT?

The QC12PEP is the right one. Evinrude changed plug requiremnents after the manufacture date.Len |

You may even be able to use the longer lasting iridium QC10WEP. Perhaps Seahorse can advise on that. If so, I would spend the extra couple of dollars on the QC10WEP. Also, when you buy plugs you might consider buying more than six because occasionally one just won't index right. |

I just bought 12 [spark plugs] from www.keenzo.com. I liked the price:$6 each plus shipping, no tax |

Once again I have to ask for the complete model number of your motor.
The early 1999 motors initially used 7712 plugs, but the 2000 FICHT Ram models were always QC12PEP if I remember correctly. |

Here are the relevant facts on the motor plate: Engine Model # - E225FPXSSC Engine Family - YI PXM0183221 Mfg Date - 9/99 Spark Plug - 7712 (and I thought it was QC21PEP ????)Statement on Engine Plate - "This engine conforms to model year 2000" |

Ok, now I remember. There were 3 mid-year changes to the engine back then, the C, H, and S models as noted by the last letter of the model number. Yours is the early production version and had the 7712 plugs before Champion was able to get the QC12PEP's into production. When you order parts, especially electrical ones, make sure to use the complete model number when looking them up and make note of any stating "for C models only". You can also use the new longer-lasting Iridium E-TEC sparkplugs, QC10WEP, per the factory. It is best to install the E-TEC V-6 thermostats to allow the motor to warm up more at idle. |

Seahorse thanks I just bought 12 QC12PEP's. Next time around I will look into the QC10WEP's. |

Seahorse -- I switched to the WEP10 plugs this year. Should I also switch to E-TEC V6 thermostats on my 2002 225s? |

the #5005440 thermostats would be a help for low speed running on a FICHT. Check the engine cylinder head temps using a temp gun to be sure that they are working, plus making sure no water is leaking by the grommet seal inside the pressure relief valve assembly. Just to make sure, take the valve apart and glue the grommet into place. |
