[Separated from a three-year-old discussion about use of VENSURA propellers on larger boats and with higher horsepower motors--jimh]

Tom suggested the Mercury VENSURA four-bladed prop, 14 x 17 [for use on a Yamaha 150-HP two-cycle on a 1992 OUTRAGE 19 II]. Does anyone have experience with [a Mercury VENSURA on a Yamaha 150-HP two-cycle on a 1992 OUTRAGE 19 II]?

I am currently running a stock 17-M SS black steel prop on my Yamaha 150 two-cycle which is rigged on a 1993, Outrage 19 II. It can turn 5,200-RPM at a speed of 43-MPH. I am thinking about a new propeller for two reasons: to gain more RPM and to stop porpoising.

The porpoising can be felt on a dead flat river when the bow seems to rise and fall in a rhythmic fashion. I have played with the trim but can not seem to stop this from happening. I am sure this is affecting the ride of the boat in rough water too and most of my time is spent in Lake Erie.

What is the max engine speed and boat speed I can expect?

What prop should I consider?

Starting to buy $450 props for a trial can start adding up pretty quick. Thanks, I am looking forward to learning more about props.

Going to a four-blade propeller from a three blade will tend to hold down the engine speed. Dropping the pitch by two inches will tend to increase the engine speed. The net results may be even or perhaps a slight increase. The only way to be certain is to try it.

The stock Yamaha propellers are not bad propellers at all, in my opinion. Because Yamaha does not try to market their propellers for use on other brands of motors, the propellers are not mentioned as often as some other brands which are made to be adaptable to more engine brands, but I don't think Yamaha propellers are particularly bad performers.

Jim G might have made the precise change you are speculating about. He was quite pleased with the outcome.

Pecos: Did you ever switch to the 4 blade? I have the same hull, 94' Outrage II w/ 150 Ocean Runner, also get quite a bit of porposing.

I'm running a SST OMC prop 14.5x19, it's a bit ragged along the edges, probably from running in clam & oyster beds (previous owner). I get wide open 5400 rpm so pitch is ok (unless the edges are worn down so much?).

I'm considering the Vensura for better ride in the chop and quicker time to plane. Most of my boating is in the bays and coastal bayous of the Gulf.
