Are any gains to be had [by the addition of a jack plate] on my 2003 170 MONTAUK? With a Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE mounted two holes up turning a LaserII propeller, the WOT speed is 42- to 44-MPH depending on load. More top end would be nice, but I'm looking for increased midrange speed with same throttle setting.

They can't hurt but with a 90hp fetching 44 I doubt you will see more than 46. You may be able to spin a larger wheel and ence your midrange might improve. I run one mainly for draft clearence.

Thanks Nick, wasn't sure if I could get a little more out of her or not. May try jack plate over the winter.

Is "two holes up" the factory setting or have you raised the engine? I managed 44mph with my 2008 170...with a light load and trimmed out. I saw 6000rpms running the 20" Laser II prop. I've been thinking about raising my engine a hole or two and trying a different prop, perhaps even a blueprinted prop with increased pitch. With that said I'm not sure how much faster I'd want to go in the 170, at 44mph the ride is pretty loose.

I posted this on another thread but I think it's relavent to this discussion.

Here is a picture of the stock mounting height. The engine is all the way in, but if it were titled up a bit the hull and cavitation plate would be about even.

Chuck,
I raised the engine two holes. I could go one more but am interested in jack plate addition to get prop in cleaner water and hopefully improve cruise speed.
