It's time to replace my aging [Mercury engine]. Is anyone running a classic [Boston Whaler EASTPORT 16 boat] with an E-TEC 60-HP? I'd like to reduce the weight on the transom. The old [Mercury] weighs about 350-375. We use her mostly to run across the Great South Bay to Fire Island with two adults and a couple of surfboards. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I replaced a heavy old Evinrude on my '74 Katama (same hull as your Eastport) with a 2006 60 HP Merc 4 stroke, listed at 247# on the Mercury website. I'm in my 3rd season with the engine, it's been great for 4 adult cruising, good acceleration, fuel economy, quiet, etc. The E-tec appears to be about the same weight as the Merc, so it should be a good match. |

I have had my E-TEC 60 about two years on a 1977 Montauk that is modified; the console and [reversible pilot seat are moved] back 21-inches and we have seating for four in front of the console. We run about 32-MPH wide open and cruise at 24- to 26-MPH. I average a little over 7-MPG. [The Evinrude E-TEC 60] is mounted in the third hole up, and I run a 17-inch pitch stainless stell propeller. Max RPM are about 5,800. There are times I wish I had more power, but, overall, I am pleased with the 60. Being a two-cylinder it does look small on the transom. |

I have a 60hp Mercury Fourstroke EFI with the Bigfoot gearcase on my 16'. I have reached 35mph lightly loaded. If you mostly plan to use your boat as described than 60hp should be more than adequate. I wish I had more power on the rare ocassions when I have three or more occupants. |
