A 1999 Johnson 50 HP. While going down the river at 15 mph on the pontoon it all of a sudden "broke" it quit going forward and revved up, We slowed down the throttle and then discovered we had reverse (yippee) but no forward. Anyone know why or what may have happened?

Best case cable is out of adjustment worst case is a problem inside the gear case itself. Disconnect the shift cable at the power head and shift it manually to see if it engages forward. Also check the gear case oil for evidence of metal shavings, particles.

There were no shavings but the oil (not much of it) had alot of pressure behind it. the oil shot out at a high rate squirting all over.

Try another prop.

To elaborate, he means the hub in your prop might have let go. Not a bad suggestion.

A lot of times they will spin but they will still give you reverse because it catches agin going backwards. I have driven back to the ramp in reverse before.

Ha, driving back to the dock in reverse is exactly what we did, and loading it on the trailer manually....YIKES!
