I have a 1988 Outrage 18 with a 1988 Yamaha 115 ETXG. Currently I have a 19-K propeller on the outboard. I recently purchased a spare gearcase that had a 13-3/4 x 17-M stainless steel propeller on it. Can I use the 13-3/4 x 17-M propeller? How do the two propellers compare in performance for my boat and motor? Thanks

The spare gearcase you bought is for a V-6, not a V-4 like your 115. They are not interchangeable.
M Series propellers fit the large (4-3/4") gear cases while K Series propellers fit the intermediate (4-1/4") gear cases. They are not interchangeable either.

I was under the impression that the V6 gearcase can be bolted to either the V4 and V6 midsection.

Well, I do not know if that is true or not but either way, M Series props are 4-3/4" and K Series are 4-1/4" and are not interchangeable.
Also be aware that the gear ratios of the V-4 and V-6 gearcases may not be the same and this will affect how the boat performs.
Why would you want to put a V-6 gearcase on a Yamaha 115 on an Outrage 18?

The only reason I am contemplating this is that I picked up a seized V6 outboard for short money that had some good parts that I needed for my V4, as there were no V4's available in my area at that time. In addition, it was a good opportunity for my 19 year old and me to learn a bit about the outboards especially in dealing with the corroded fasteners and I am only considering this as a backup lower unit if possible. I realize that the props are not interchangeable.

Had to chuckle, there is much to learn on the subject of OBs and corroded fasteners. Have fun and may you and son learn well. Any day we open our minds and gather additional information is one to give thanks for.
