It looks like my search is over. I found a 2003 [Boston Whaler] 170 [MONTAUK] with Yamaha-Mercury 90-HP four-cycle for $13,000. It is well kept, has the cushion package, a 2005 Boston Whaler trailer with swing tounge. My build goes like this: --$13,000 for Boat, Motor, Trailer --$9,000 E-TEC 115 H.O. rigged but I have to mount the motor then bring it back to an authorized dealer for start-up (Over power liability the dealer can't mount it) --$3,500 credit for the Yamaha-Mercury 90-HP. Total investment is $18,500. A new 170 runs about [$10,000] more. What do you guys think? What do you think the performance will be? |

$3,500 is fair for the 90, especially a carbed one. Boat should do 50+ and ANY repower is gonna be pricey, yours is not bad being you did not pay $25k for it in 2003. |

I think you did just fine. A new, more powerful engine for $5,000. Sounds like you were after some additional performance, and you will have it with the E-TEC 115 HO. You will probably forget the number of times you will be glad you made the switch. Buying at today's prices makes the $5,000 pill easier to swallow as well. |

Wow!Q 50 mph plus in a Montauk? My 1979 with a 1989 Suzuki 100 will do 42 empty and that speed almost scares me. I can't imagine going 50 plus in a Montauk. The hull would barely touch the water. |

My deal for 2003 fell through; but I just close a deal on a sweet 2005! Picking her up on Saturday. Any design changes between 2003 and 2005 model year? Also with installing the E-Tec 115 H.O. (rated at 128HP), what do you think about installing hydraulic steering? Cost is about $400. |

Unless you are a "diehard-must have" OMC/Evinrude fan, why not go with a 125HP Optimax 115ProXS and save yourself about $2500 for a rigged engine. The engine is $1200 less http://jacosmarine.com/ , weighs the same, and can use all of the existing Mercury rigging and gauges, another $1000 savings. Just hook it up and go. Cheap and easy. What would I do? For the 9K price of that E-tec, I could put a 135 Optimax on her from one the Bass Pro Shop's deals ($8100). Now we're talking V-6 power. But just as I am with Merc, if you must have E-tec, I can certainly understand that too. Hydraulic steering not needed for any of this. Just use a "Steersman" grease nut on the ram output side and you'll be fine with the 4.2 No-feedback. If you go with the 115 Evinrude, I would be interested in how top speed compares with the 46 MPH of the 2007 and up Merc 4-stroke 90. |

Interesting idea 135HP Optimax V6...since it's the same weight I could put the 175HP on her :)! Price aside, lets compare the two 115's - Mercury Optimax Pro 115 XS: Evinrude E-Tec 115 H.O.: Any conculsions we can draw from the spec'S? The Opti is giving up 201CC's to the E-Tec, that's 11.5% less displacement. I would think that would translate into very difference in torque curves for each engine. Plus the V4's shorter stroke could mean the E-Tec spinning up faster into it's ideal power band. Looks like the E-Tec is making it's highest HP father up in the RPM band. Slightly different gear ratio's. I think the V4 would be a smoother running engine the the inline 3. What your thoughts? Has anyone seem the HP and torgue charts mapped out for each of these engines?

My thoughts, I think you are right in assuming the V-4 would be a smoother running engine than a in-line three. I cannot see how the three in a row cylinder configuration is going to run as smooth as four slightly smaller pistons each firing opposed to each other and with much less stroke. The four cylinder V-4 configuration seems to me to be more inherently and internally balanced. I like three cylinder engines in the 70-90hp range displacing less cubes than the 115hp Mercury. But very few of them I have owned could match the idle quality and smoothness running of a V-4. There truly is no replacement for displacement, the E-tec wins there. |

Well then, how about the 4 cylinder 105.67 cube 115 EFI 4-stroke? A strong engine that would make the 170 look like a brand new boat, since the 90 and 115 are identical in size and weight. Still like the 135 Opti however. It would be rockethsip. |

I took delivery of the 2005 Boston Whaler 170 Montauk. Next weekend I will take off the Mercury 90HP two cycle, and take off all the Mercury controls. Question the boat has a 24 gallon Plate fuel tank it looks ok, but do you think I should replace it because of possible ethanol issues? Yes, get rid of the Pate fiberglass tank. If you are not going to spring for twin 12 gallon MIRAX fuel tanks, then the new white Moeller 24 tank looks like an excellent substitute. Based my experience with the regular E-TEC 115 on an Outrage 17, I suspect the E-TEC 115 H.O. will run circles around both the Mercury FourStroke 115 and the OptiMax 115 and would give the much larger, heavier OptiMax 135 a run for its money. |

The difference with the argument you made is that you were comparing a 4-stroke to a 2-stroke not a 2-stroke to a 2-stroke. 4-strokes need more displacement to produce the same power curve of an equivalent HP 2-stroke. Some data suggests the 4-stroke needs as much as 25 to 30 percent more displacement. A recent confirmation of that can be found in Yamaha's new V6 4-stroke products. |

Joe, I think Peter's prediction is reasonable. Since we have no record of anybody putting an E-TEC 115 H.O. on a Whaler, we have to make some assumptions. If we assume the E-TEC 115 H.O. is genuinely more powerful than the E-TEC 115, then I'll go out on a limb and predict a top speed of 51 MPH using a 13-7/8" x 21" BRP Viper, 13-1/2" x 20" BRP Raker or 13-1/4" x 19" Stiletto Advantage/Turbo 1. |

My 48.5 MPH prediction uses Whaler performance information and assumes that the Mercury 4-stroke produces 100 HP because Larry repeatedly tells us that any Mercury outboard is a "hot" motor. ;) If it is merely 90 HP (not so hot), then 51 MPH is a good prediction and you can step up the pitch to 20/21 inches. |

Peter has his figures all botched up. I was told a Mercury 2-stroke 90 is about 98 HP. Don't know if it is or not, but Erik Selis here has told us it is faster than an E-tec 90, and Clark Roberts here has said his classic Montauk ran 48 MPH with this engine. You don't have to believe either of these guys. Don't know of any E-tec 90's here that run over 43 on a classic Montauk, and even that's a highly jacked up push. Boston Whaler also reported that the 170 ran 43MPH with the 2-stroke 90, and 46 with the Verado block 4-stoke 90, conservatively installed. You don't have to believe them either. So that tells me the Verado 90 is quite powerful, in spite of its weight. I'm still waiting for some sucker to remove a Verado 90 and put a 90 E-tec on instead hoping for better performance, and then to hear about the E-tec 90 performance and fuel economy on a 170. I think Ridge runner is smart to go way up in HP if installing Evinrude. A 127HP engine should run well on a 170 if the insurance company doesn't mind. That engine exceeds the 10% rule? Merc Optimax 115HO is only 124HP, but it stays within the 10% rule. I don't think any of the 3 cylinder Optimax or E-tec are strong engines considering their HP ratings. For 115HP, I like 6 cylinders! |

It is a shame that there aren't a lot of options for the 170 that stay within the legal power range but I am not sure I would be happy with the Etec on the back, even with a 115. The 170 is big and the big veradito does not look overly large, while I would think the Etec would look too small. Having not to worry about adding oil, or installing a remote has spoiled me. Just gas and go. I think that maybe this boat will not go as fast as some of you are guessing with the Etec 115. It will be interesting to hear the final results. |

If it was not the HO 115 I agree with you. Since most eport it is basically a rebadged 130, I think 50 is in the picture if set up correctly...with a jackplate of course. |

My main reason for going to the 115 H.O. was not for top end speed; although I will prop it to do some high speeds runs. It was to be able to do deep water single ski starts with 240lb skier. |

Don't know if this is helpful but I have a 2003 90hp "Mercaha" and my 170 I runs 44.3mph in fresh water. The boat is equiped with a trolling motor and 26 gallon Moeller gas tank {full}. No jackplate, just up two holes. |

A quick search found a thread where Tobasco describes the performance of his montauk 170 with a 115 Mercaha: posted 08-14-2002 08:25 AM ET (US) The insurance is no problem, have it insured with Progressive and the 115HP motor is written into the policy as over HP rating. Well there you have it I'm out of the closet. Tabasco If his boat went 50.3 MPH with 115 HP than I don't see why a 115 HO ETEC (127.5 HP) can't push it to 52+ MPH. |

I don't know whether Jim has said that or not but the simple fact of the matter is that displacement matters and not all 115 HP motors are the same. Go back and carefully reread RR's post that you quoted. I'll reproduce it here. "The Opti is giving up 201CC's to the E-Tec, that's 11.5% less displacement. I would think that would translate into very difference in torque curves for each engine." Your question above appears to confuse peak HP with full operating range torque or power curves. RR was speaking to power curves (available power at any particular RPM) not peak HP. I guarantee you that if you replaced your 1.6 or 1.7 L 90 HP Mercury FourStroke with a 1.7L 90 HP Evinrude V4 DFI on the transom of your boat there would be a blatantly obvious difference in throttle response, yet the boat would probably go about the same top speed. The difference in throttle response is the due to the difference in power/torque curves. RR wants a motor that is able to do deep water single ski starts with 240lb skier. The low and mid-range torque capability of the 1.7L V4 DFI 2-stroke is really the best tool for that job. |

Just as I stated above that the E-Tec 115’s have more displacement then the Mercury Opti 115. The reverse is true about the E-Tec 90, 1296cc’s compared to the Opti 90 at 1526cc’s. The E-Tec is gives up 230cc’s that’s 15% less displacement! Also against the Mercury 90hp FOURSTROKE, at 1732cc’s is down by 436cc’s that’s a huge 25% less displacement. I would think that same HP; from a “detuned” block of the same displacement compared to an “enhanced” performance block with less displacement would give very different real life experiences. I believe SCJoe statement about the E-Tec 90 compared to the Mercury FOURSTROKE 90; that Merc block is at the low end of it’s marketed HP and the E-Tec is at the high end….. My choice for this motor came down to; marketed HP could not go over 115, because that’s the max I could get insured. Weight: Max is rate at 410 lbs. Highest displacement for the rated HP, and I wanted two cycle power (no oil changes). So the E-Tec is the clear winner because it’s power from displacement. |

Ridge - For the mid-range engines I have no argument with your displacement conclusions. The 115HO should be a winner for you (provided you run a Merc HighFive prop on her, the waterskiing champion puller! - but for general use and top end run a Laser II). But when you look at the V-6 2-stroke DFI's, it falls apart, with HP for HP, the Merc Opti's have smaller displacement than the E-tecs, but run at least the same in performance, or mostly better, and generally get 10% better fuel economy. Just ask the bass and performance crowd. In spite of 3.4 cubes, Evinrude makes no engine that will run with the 3.2 liter Merc 300XS, supposedly a 310HP engine according to Mercury dyno tests. Evinrude needs 3.3 liters to come even close to the performance of a 3.0 liter Optimax in the 225-250 HP ranges. Now I would agree that part of this comes from the "V" confuguration, where the big block Evinrudes use an old throwback OMC 90 degree block from the mid '80's, whereas the Merc 3.0 liter 60 degree block dates from 1994, a newer, more fuel efficient modern design. The Orbital Optimax system generally gets better fuel economy across the board than the E-tec system, because of the air injectors. One thing for sure is that the 115HO will not get as good fuel economy as the smaller 3 cylnder Optimax 115 ProXS, and generally the HO's get poorer economy than the regular E-tecs. But fuel economy is not important to me with my choice of outboards, so I don't see why it should be for you either. Good luck with you new installation, and let us know how she runs. To date, we have no installations of that HO engine on Whalers. Nice to see you buying "Wisconsin"! |

WOT range for the E-TEC 115 H.O. is 5500-6000 RPM but the optimal range is 5500-5650 RPM. Put a 19" Stiletto Advantage on it and run it in a light chop and you will should well over 50 MPH. |

The prop size is interesting. Why did you not put a 21" on the engine? I would think the much higher torque 115 E-TEC should easily be able to reach WOT with a larger prop. The 90 HP Mercury FourStroke does. |

Wow--The E-TEC 115 H.O. looks great on the 170 MONTAUK. The engine size is very proportional to the boat. These days we seem to have become accustomed to an engine size that is grotesque in proportion to the boat, and I think this is from the use of so many overly large four-cycle motors. That 115-H.O. E-TEC is very attractive. I also like the modern cowling graphic that comes with the H.O. motor. Bombardier Recreational Products have given the E-TEC some very nice graphics. |

I'm quite surprised at the accolades for the graphics. In my opinion, as a trained designer, they're inexplicable and ill-conceived. Let me explain: The simple introduction of the color red on the engine could, and does I would argue, cause aesthetic conflicts on this particular boat that has no other red detail of substance. If my graphics and canvas are blue or black, this creates an unnecessary complexity and point of attention to an otherwise complementary component, the white and black detailed engine. Furthermore, the graphic itself obscures what could be described as the void, a blank space where the eye can rest, or relax, in what is otherwise a compact and detailed assemblage of many parts and shapes. This blank space that the amateurish and frustrated graphic designers at BRP opted to fill served a critical purpose, setting off and balancing the complexity of the whole. Finally, lets address the lowest hanging fruit, the shape and message of the graphic itself. There seems to be the suggestion of a checkered flag in the subdued gray grid, which could argue for speed and success. But really, those red scythes, or swoops, hard edged and shadowed on the pointy end, fadeaway on the blunt, are the real "stars" of this piece. They point in different directions, both forward and backward, up and down, sort of following the elegantly detailed and shaped cowling joint trim. Man, I have no idea what message these send other than the designers used just enough of them to fill the entire space. Really, these graphics rank right in front of the flag themed batch they sent out on an earlier motor. They are indisputably bad by every objective measure. Otherwise, it looks like a great repower project with clean rigging and right-sized horsepower for the 170. Congratulations Ridge Runner! |

The shape of the flowing bodies of the graphic is evocative of waves, such as the wake that is created by a fast boat. The red color is contained in the shadow of the word EVINRUDE. I believe this is a consistent graphic element in the logotype for EVINRUDE. Red is frequently used as an accent color on boats. One very common example is the use of a red logotype on a Boston Whaler boat. My 1992 Boston Whaler boat has a red Boston Whaler harpoon logotype. It is the only red graphic element on the boat. |

Most outboards have red graphics of some sort. Mercury, Suzuki, and Yamaha usually have red in them somewhere. If an engine has color on it it is usually red or blue. Honda has no color on them since the early 90's and personally I think they are ugly and bland. |

You can use 21" BRP Viper or 19" Stiletto Advantage. Both will yield similar RPM. I'll put the Advantage up against the Viper any day of the week. The Viper has a street price of about $350. The Advantage is about $250. |

A 4 blade propeller isn't necessary for Montauk 170. I would go with Tom's recommendation on the 19 inch Stiletto Advantage although I do wonder whether that pitch would put the top RPM around 5300 under the same loading. |

It's nice to have a 50MPH+ boat, but that's not the goal. I need strong holeshot to pull a large skier in deap water starts. Plus really good mid-range for fishing upto 10 miles off shore in 4 to 6 foot swells. A 4 blade has always done a great job for me in the offshore enviroment. |

My 2004 170 Montauk that I just ran near WOT was: 5800 rpm I was assuming that if I bolted on a 115 hp Mercury and got a 22 pitch prop: 6200 rpm Have fun going fast in your 170 Montauk, I love it. Tom lets hold-off until I do some more testing and bring the engine up at least one hole. I missed the post where you spotted the mounting height (keen eye). After running a level across the bottom, with the engine trimmed all the way in, it does look like I could have some drag because of the lower unit. I'm going to try and pull it up and re-test this weekend; weather permitting. |

You're comparing different propellers. A 19" Stiletto will yield about the same RPM as a 21" Mercury propeller. I have no doubt the E-TEC 115 H.O. could easily turn a Mercury 21" or even a 22" prop up to its recommended WOT RPM range...if you could get a Mercury propeller to fit, which it won't. |

The 0.01:1 or 0.02:1 is slight. |

Perhaps a better way to understand the apparent differences in the way propellers of similar pitch perform is to point to the blade geometry. I have had many propellers measured/calibrated on equipment designed to peasure pitch. Even though 2 propellers may have the same pitch, the shape, cup and even diameter seem to determine, in addition to the pitch, how fast the propeller will spin. That is how I inderstand why propellers of similar pitch act differently. Anecdotally, I have had 22" pitch propellers only able to spin 5,000 RPM's and 23" pitch propellers able to spin 5,600 RPM on the same set-up. |

SC Joe -- Yes, I do understand what you are asking, but you have missed my point completely. To answer your question, yes a Mercury 21" pitch propeller is really a 21" pitch propeller....and a Stiletto 19" pitch propeller is really a 19" pitch propeller. But if I have said this once, I have said it a thousand times: There is far more to propeller design than just pitch...or diameter...or number of blades. Propellers are not generic pieces of hardware like a wood screw from the hardware store. Different designs of propellers will perform differently for a hundred different reasons. As to manufacturer's pitch designations, there is a belief that some manufacturers somehow cheat by misstating the pitch of their propellers. I suppose that could be true but I doubt it. All props have a stated pitch but no modern outboard propeller has a constant pitch, the pitch varies for every single point on the blade. There are in infinite number of different pitches on every propeller blade. So what is one to do? While I have never seen it codified anywhere, manufacturers use an average of pitch measure at several differs points on the blade and round that number, and I do not hink their methods vary by much. One might expect, that in the case of Stiletto propeller, that if one were to take a Stiletto prop and props from other manufacturers to the some prop shop and have them measured for pitch using the same criteria, the Stiletto would be shown to have a pitch far less that what it says on it. But that is NOT the case. Actual measurements of Stiletto propellers has shown the pitch to measure like any other propeller. |

Took the day off yesterday for some testing :). I had a local Power Tech dealer help me with the height adjustment and tested three of their props. The props that they had my hub configuration for where: the Power Tech OST3 (I was told is about the same as OMC SST), RED3 (I was told similar to a Stiletto) and RBX4. Environmental: OST3 This prop would blow out even with moderate trim up and didn’t perform well in hard turns at all. 21” pitch is the max Power Tech makes in this prop, I felt like a 23” would have performed better. In full acceleration the motor could break this prop lose with the new mounting height. RED3 This prop had very good grip and had a good mid-range cruise, I wouldn’t say the motor struggled to spin it up from a dead stop but it took a noticeable amount of more time. A 19” pitch would have been the right choice here; but it did provide the highest top end speed. (I have to say over 50 is too fast for my liking, things start to get a little squirrelly).
This is a 4 blade 5/16” ported prop. This prop was my favorite for the way I plan to use the boat. The acceleration was awesome, pulled like a mule, it made the boat feel like it was riding on rails and that you are always in control. This prop held plane at considerably less [engine speed] than the other props.

I will try to take some video of the boat and motor on plane to show where the plate is sitting in the water; but it will be a while now it's time for rigging the new VHF, chartplotter, FF, stereo, main panel, battery switch and mounting the new fuel tank, fuel filter, cooler, 6" SS deck plate.... |

OST3 13 ¼ x 21 WOT: 6150rpm Top Speed: 48.6mph gear ratio 2.0 prop slip calculated at 20.53% RED3 RBX4 Prop slip measures the effeciency of the hull moving through the water at WOT. I don't know of any 170 Montauk that has ever measured a prop slip under 6% (90 hp motors). So, does the extra horsepower of the 115 HO E-TEC outboard cause the hull to move more efficiently through the water at WOT? Thanks, Warren |

Thanks Tom, I think I get it. Keeping all hardware constant (prop, gear ratio), you try get your prop slip reduced (more efficient) by changing rpm or top speed (raising motor, less weigh on board, etc.) Warren |

Good job. 51+ MPH blows a big hole through Larry's theory that the Veradito 90 is a super hot motor. Looks like a mere 90 HP mortal based on this report and the prior published performance reports for the Veradito 90. The RBX4 needs more pitch. The E-TEC 115 must be bouncing off of the rev limiter. |

If it went to 6150 RPM with the OST3, it most certainly is not bouncing off the rev limiter with the RBX4 at only 5800 RPM. That 16 percent drop on top speed when going to the RBX4 probably also represents a 16 percent decrease in fuel economy too. I'd still like to see a 19" Stiletto tested on this boat. |

I don’t think so. If the RED3, Stiletto type, pitch should be correct at 19”,then I believe the “rule of thumb” for going to a 4 blade is to drop the pitch by an inch or two. Which is why you lose the 3 to 4mhp on the top end with a 4 blade. Now the most optimum pitch maybe an 18” which would mean sending the prop to Power Tech and having it worked, but at 5800rpms at WOT, I think I'm at a sweet spot. |

Ok, ok… as I’m sitting here thinking about it. Let’s test the 19" Stiletto. I could use two good prop’s anyway… I will try for a highest speed run I can and strip off all the “stuff” cooler, anchor/rode/chain, use a 3 gallon portable tank, and run the boat with just me on board. I will also go back to a "normal state" and compare all the fuel flow measurements (I-Command gauges are cool!)between the 19" Stiletto and 17” RBX4 at diffent rpm ranges and I will also note the lowest planning speed each prop can hold. SC Joe, Read more carefully. I said the Stiletto will perform like some other propellers with two more inches of pitch. But I also said that the Stiletto will measure like some other propellers. If you do not understand that distinction, start at the top of the thread and reread. I do NOT think that Stiletto propellers are, in general, superior to other propellers, nor do I think they are inferior. The stand among several manufacturers of excellent props. I think that the Stiletto Advantage model in particular has many very good applications among modest sized Boston Whalers, the boat being discussed here among them. I also know that Stiletto propellers can be had for less money than anybody else's propellers most of the time. That makes them good value. |
