A Bombardier Recreational Products outboard engine will typically have a model number in the form
PREFIX - STYLE - HORSEPOWER - FEATURES - SHAFT LENGTH - MODEL YEAR - SUFFIX
These can be decoded as follows:
PREFIX
(no information available--typically omitted)
STYLE
E = Evinrude
J = Johnson
HORSEPOWER
One, two, or three Arabic numerals
FEATURES
AP = Advanced Propulsion
B = Blue Paint
C = Counter Rotation
D = Evinrude E-TEC
E = Electric Start w/Remote Steering
F = Direct-Injection
G = Graphite Paint
H = High Output
J = Jet Drive
M = Military
P = Power Trim and Tilt
R = Rope Start w/Tiller Steering
S = Saltwater Edition
T = Tiller Steering
TE = Tiller Electric
V = White Paint
W = Commercial Model
SHAFT LENGTH
LENGTH:
[blank] = 15-inch or Standard
L = 20-inch or Long
Y = 22.5-inch or Special
X = 25-inch or X-long
Z = 30-inch or XX-long
MODEL YEAR
I = 1
N = 2
T = 3
R = 4
O = 5

Alpha character to identify production run
For example, a BRP engine with model number
E225DPXSCA
decodes as an
E = Evinrude
225 = 255-HP
D = Evinrude E-TEC
P = Power Trim and Tilt
X = Long or 25-inch shaft
SC = 2008 model year
A = production run A

The above model numbering system is handy but only for 1980 and newer motors. Previous systems used the year's last digit after the horsepower number and earlier yet, a 2 letter and 2 number designation for Johnson and a 4 to 6 digit number for Evinrude.

Everybody has a chart for OMC motors. This one is for BRP motors.

On an E-TEC engine the paint color is usually indicated by the shaft length. The general rule with E-TEC engines is:
Blue = 15-inch or 20-inch shaft
White = 25 or 30-inch shaft
with these exceptions:
HIGH OUTPUT MODELS
Blue engines with 25-inch shaft:
250-HO E250DHX
225-HO E225DHX
White engines with 20-inch shaft
250-HO E250HSL
225-HO E225HSL
200-HO E200HLV and E200HSL
150-HO E150HSL
115-HO E115HSL
STANDARD MODELS
Blue engines with 25-inch shaft:
150-HP E150DBX
115-HP E115DBX
White engines with 20-inch shaft
300-HP E300DSL
200-HO E200DSL
175-HP E175DSL
150-HP E150DSL
130-HP E130DSL
115-HP E115DSL
90-HP E90DSL
75-HP E75DSL
60-HP E60DSL

The BRP motors are reported to work better and are more reliable than their Model Number Decoding system.

I agree--the model number system is more complex than the oil distribution hose routing.

Jim could it be that your engine is not decoded as a 2008 because of the SC? What I mean is the S could stand for Saltwater ed. and the C is 8 for 08. Is your a SW edition?

SC = 2008
IS = 2010
S/saltwater code is only used on 20"L white motors and the S will be before the L, E225HSLISF.

Anyone know where to find that on a 2004 Johnson 40 4 stroke? Mine says engine Family:4BCXM0050220 on the side sticker along with the other info like timing, oil, plugs, etc.

That sounds like the Family Emission Limit (FEL) number.
