[This article has been moved to PERFORMANCE. Please use PERFORMANCE to discussion re-powering of classic Boston Whaler boats.--jimh]Currently [a Boston Whaler SUPER SPORT 13 boat is powered by] a 1993 [Mercury four-cylinder two-cycle motor of unknown horsepower]. [The author expresses] concern about the heavier weights of the current [40-HP outboard engines,] both two-cycle and four-cycle. What [outboard engines] have others used [to re-power a Boston Whaler SUPER SPORT 13]? Thanks.

I run Honda BF35 at 200 lb fuel tank under front seat with two GR 27 batteries under front seat also. I feel it is a perfect motor for a 13. My 13 is a 93 model. It has great fuel economy, very quiet and is just the right amount of power. I know they do not make the 35 anymore but if you could find a good used one, it would be a great engine. Hope you find one, Robert |

I am probably the heaviest with a 40 Suzuki at 240 dry so over 260 w/prop. Rides like a dream. Don't believe the hype about weight unless you own a pre-smirked 13'(1971-older). |

The 30 E-TEC on our 13' Super Sport is a fantasitc match. More that ample power/speed, acceleration, NO smoke, quiet, sips fuel, barely uses oil at all. Don't need to touch it for 3 years. Awesome! |

I have an 1999 Yamaha 4 stroke 25 with power trim and tilt on my 1972 13 Whaler. With a PowerTech cupped stainless prop it easily planes four adults. Although Yamaha now makes a 25hp four stroke with power trim and tilt that would make a good engine for a 13 Whaler, the 30hp E-Tec weighs only 7 pounds more and would be my choice for a re-power. The 40hp E-Tec weighs about 70 pounds more and is way too heavy for a 13. |

Thanks form the input. I've been looking at the 25 and 30 E-TEC engines, and think that's the way I'll head unless I just happen to bump into something used. |

That's a good pick. I also like the Honda 30hp. One thing for sure is I'd buy a model with Power Tilt & Trim. I'm considering the CMC PT for my older 50hp 2 stroke which still runs strong. |

Personally I think my 40 is too much hp and a 25/30 would be perfect. Then again going from a 40 to a 25 might piss me off once it's done. |

I have a 1986 13' with a 50HP Yamaha. Although I wanted a 40 HP, I could not pass up on the super clean used two stroke 50. The boat handles the weight fine, with the battery moved under the front console. Although the 13' with it's odd bottom, does not perform like the 15' with more HP. If you can find a clean used 40HP Two stroke Yamaha with oil injection, the boat will perform well. |

The Johnson/Evenrude 48HP or 50HP works well, also & is light weight. One W/PT&T is the way to go. Only drawback is the remote oil tank, taking up deck space. |

An antiquated 2cyl OMC is roughly 200lbs with PTnT, so are most modern 4 strokes. His current Merc is probably close(180+). |
