We are re-powering a 2003 Montauk 170 with a new Yamaha 90-HP EFI four-cycle motor. We get a Yamaha stainless prop with the deal.[Give me] a reading on the proper [propeller] from Yamaha. Currently we have an Vengeance 18-pitch on the Mercury FOURSTROKE that is coming off. The gearing is very close between the two. This is a fishing and cruising boat now days.

Thanks Jim

Jim -- If you get your pick of Yamaha stainless steel propellers, you want a 13-1/4" x 16" Yamaha Performance Series propeller, part # MAR-GYT3B-V4-16.

Tom, Thank you very much. I was hoping you would be around to answer. Jim

Why not use the Vengence?

It would work. But looking for options. I was not expecting the 16P recommendation but it looks good.

The Yamaha website has some good data sheets with the 16P and 18P Yamaha props mounted on the 90 mounted on different 16 and 17 foot boats.

The Yamaha comparison looks like this: The 18P was on slightly lighter boats than the Montauk with slower on plane times. The 16P was on slightly heavier boats close to the Montauk's weight. The on plane times were shorter. We've got three batteries and a bow trolling motor too. Just some thoughts. Jim

He selected an PowerTech RAF3 15P, ran out at 5900 RPM under testing, Jim

Specs on the PowerTech RAF3 say "typically drop 1 inch of pitch" with this prop. It is 13.25" diameter. So could match closely to Tom's pick. Jim

The prop is actually a RED3 PowerTech. Jim

I wasn't able to locate the data sheets on the Yamaha website. If I understand your posts correctly though, you'd recommend the 18p for a lighter craft? I run a '69 17'Saikonnet.

Sorry, Yamaha has taken the data sheets down.

I would start a new thread in PERFORMANCE and maybe Tom Clark will answer. I don't want to steer you wrong, Jim
