Anything in particular I should know about [a used 2004 Yamaha F225 outboard engine] before I go look at it?

It should be dark silver.

Check the compression (see if the engine is cold nice to see it crank up when cold), see if the water pump is working good (ask when it has be changed last along with the lower unit oil) If the owner is any kind of a boat person he should have knowledge of these things and maybe the receipts. Then just check the outside of the engine look for rust, anything broken? Does this engine come with the oil tank, controls, gauge's. Any paper work on the outboard. Look at it with someone 4 eyes are better than 2...good luck

If it comes with an external oil tank...run, don't walk, away.

General advice for assessing used outboard engines is given in

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/outboardCheck.html

and although written with classic two-cycle engines, much of the advice will apply to four-cycle outboard engines.

If an outboard engine has a computer controller that records engine running time, it would be reasonable to obtain the engine running time from the computer. I don't know if the Yamaha F225 has that facility or not. But I would inquire about it.

Yes it does.

Some of the F225s from that era have shown corrosion in the water plate. When the plate becomes perforated, the engine tends to overheat. Have the exhaust system inspected by YOUR (not the Seller's) Yamaha mechanic for corrosion. That means that the gearcase has to be pulled and the interior of the system viewed with a scope.

Ask for service records that show that the internal engine block anodes have been inspected periodically and changed out if necessary. I suspect that this maintenance item has been overlooked by many owners, particularly the DIYers because the owner's manuals did not do a very good job of describing this. Later owner's manuals do a better job of calling out that maintenance requirement.

Well, my buddy just bought the boat this motor is hanging on, pending its arrival in the advertised condition.
If it isn't, it will be returned.

It is said to have just 280 hours on it.

I think he stuck his neck out buying it sight unseen.

I was mainly asking if there was something in particular to be wary of regarding this motor and model year.

Thanks...
J
