[Is] anyone here using an outboard with an aftermarket electronic throttle and shift control like Teleflex offers? How do you like it? Why do the benefits of electronic controls need to be limited to the large high horsepower engines like Verado?

I have noticed recently that many of the mid-range engines I work on have what I consider to be un-acceptable high effort required to shift from forward to neutral, even with a properly idling engine, new controls, proper adjustment, etc. I see no reason (other than perhaps cost) why someone couldn't rig their Montauk with an electronic binnacle control. So has anyone done this?

The cost of re-fitting to electronic throttle and shift controls has probably been a burden to their adoption in smaller boats.

Not only cost, but the location of the actuators in a small boat could be a problem because the actuators are located on the boat rather than under the hood. The upside of that location, however, is that the investment in Teleflex electronic controls doesn't get thrown away if you change brands of outboards as it can be used with any brand motor.

I am fairly sure the actuators for the Verado's electronic control system on my Montauk are engine mounted. I can't swear to it but I've yet to see any actuator attached to the boat. Perhaps an actuator is contained within the binnacle control box?

An aftermarket system may have to use boat mounted actuators due to a lack of space and/or mounting opportunities under the cowling. Too bad, if so, because the simplicity of running a simple electrical cable between the binnacle and engine is a significant plus when rigging the boat.

Now that I've enjoyed electronic shift and throttle control I would hate to give it up. Even on a relatively small 135 HP Verado it is a very nice feature. Well, that was a dumb statement since the same engine produces up to 200 HP.

I hadn't really given enough thought to where and how to locate the necessary hardware. I was thinking of my Ventura, and I know it could be done easily with that boat, but a center console might present problems. I guess it might depend on the maximum length of mechanical cables that are allowed in the system.
I realize that BIG engines have room under the cowl for DTS, but smaller engines do not. Yet DTS could bring a new level of enjoyment to smaller boat operation.
