Looking at a 25 Outrage WD. Has original Evinrude twin 150's. I seem to recall these boats rated at 400hp max. Thinking of going to a new single 300hp E-TEC or 4 stroke Yamaha. I'm assuming 30" shaft in this case. The thought is that the 550lb total weight would be a benefit, not to mention the lower cost and simplicity vs. twin 150/200hp E-TECs.

I saw a great deal of debate regarding 22WD engines, didn't see so much regarding 25WDs. Any thoughts?

FYI The 25' WD were rated for 450hp.

That's alot of boat (almost 27 feet) to only have a single outboard pushing it. You will lose docking control by going to a single outboard. Also, in addition to that, I would be concerned about not having enough propeller surface area to keep the stern up and to push the boat efficiently (kind of like having skinny tires on a sports car).

The Whaler Drive boats were really designed to have twin outboards.

A 300 HP motor would be fine if you are not a speed demon. The Outrage 25 Cuddy Whaler Drive is a bigger boat than the Outrage 25 Cuddy but not so much so that a single 250 HP motor or larger outboard would not be adequate.

Yes, there is a loss of low speed maneuverability any time you go from twins to a single but this is only a problem if you are not skilled at docking.

If the boat is going to be used for offshore use, I would not recommend a single engine.

Thanks for your comments. The motors on the boat need replacement as it turns out. The dealer quoted me nearly $25k for a Yamaha 300hp 4 stroke. Little pricey for me. If I could find some used twin motors from early/mid 2000's, say Yamaha or Mercs, I'd go that route. Not sure I'd want to test fate with a 300hp HPDI Yamaha.

Used to have a 22' Outrage Cuddy that I had to sell a couple of years back. Miss that boat.

If I were in your position, I'd put a pair of E-TEC 150s on that boat. By doing that you can use the existing binacle control if you want to save money. You wouldn't need to spend any money on transom work to fill and drill new holes. New gauges and a wiring harness is all that would be needed as far as rigging goes. I believe that the existing oil tanks could be reused.

I don't recall reading any reports of a 22/25 Whaler Drive repowers with a pair of 4-stroke 150s. The 4-cylinder 150 4-strokes might be too tall to allow them to tilt far enough out of the water to get the gearcases out of the water without the cowlings interfering with the transom.

While it seems to have good low and mid-range the torque missing from the 1st generation of V6 4-strokes, the Yamaha F300 (V6) is a very large motor and might be so large that cowling interference with the transom is a problem. At the time of design, Whaler was never contemplating the existence of 4.2L 4-stroke outboards.
