[Deleted reference to the motor as an "F150". The designator "F150" usually refers to a Yamaha engine. Mercury does not have a short model designator for this engine.--jimh]

Hi. I am about [to buy] the new Mercury three-litre 150-HP ["FOURSTROKE"] to replace my 2006 Mercury EFI 150-HP two-cycle outboard engine. [Have any readers] had any experience with these new motors? I thought I might ask the question before buying it next week.

I'll know more in a few weeks. I just got one in the shop to rig on a heavy 19-foot Arima. This one is a 20-inch shaft and weighs 455-lbs. Gear ratio is 1.85 and max engine speed is 6,000-RPM. We are replacing a 2006 Optimax 150, which is a similar 2.5 litre engine like your 150 EFI. My customer had his air compressor fail while 20 miles offshore and decided to give the FourStroke a try. It will be an interesting comparison in every respect.

One thing you will notice that is different. The new 150 appears to be shutting off a couple of cylinders whenever you shift. This is supposed to reduce the shift effort getting from in gear back to neutral. I was running the engine on a stand and on a garden hose and shifting it by hand right at the linkage. I thought it was pretty stiff. I hope it works better when hooked up to controls. The engine did start instantly and sounded like a small Mercruiser on the hose.

What hull are you putting yours on? 20-inch or 25-inch shaft? Cable steering or hydraulic?

Thank you for the response sosmerc. [The Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE is going on a] 19-foot half-cabin 22-degree deadrise fibreglass [boat]. [The shaft length is] 25 XL [and the] steering [is] hydraulic. [Will] use existing Smartcraft and Navman setup. It will be rigged next week if I go ahead with it.

sosmerc--thank you for the first hand report on the Mercury 150-HP FOURSTROKE--the new engine just announced a few months ago. Your report is the first actual hands-on comment about the engine that I have read. I look forward to hearing more about the new engine.
