I have a 2005 130 SPORT with Mercury 40-HP FOURSTROKE. I had trouble planing with three people last year. I added a hydrofoil last year and it helped out a lot. Over the winter I added a bow mount trolling motor and extra battery. Yesterday we went striper fishing, and, once we had the 15-gallon cooler filled with some water and herring, we really had to work at getting on plane. In all fairness we were probably a good 200-lbs over the weight limit. I am going to work on reducing unnecessary gear and emptying the cooler when moving long distances. Once we got on plane we were fine around 26-MPH. I can get over 30-MPH solo with no problem planing.

Will a new propeller help? If so, what pitch? I really don't want to spend too much, maybe around $150. I assume [the current propeller is] the original propeller. Suggest a propeller that won't break the bank.

We need to know what propeller you have now and what engine speed you are running at WOT.

If you are going to be carrying heavy loads often, then you should consider adding diameter and lowering the pitch of your current propeller.

You should not assume anything when it comes to propellers. We need to know what is on there for sure.

Small boats like your Boston Whaler 130 SPORT are very sensitive to crew weight and added weight of gear because those weights will be a very significant change in the total weight of the boat. As a result, you have to select a propeller for the load. If you want a propeller that pops the boat onto plane with a heavy load, you will have to fit a propeller with less pitch.

Thanks for your replies, the number on the propeller is 816706A40P14 so I assume the pitch is 14 and it's aluminum. It has 3 blades and is black

With myself 220lbs and minimal gear I can easily plane off and at WOT reach 30-32mph

With two people and some gear I usually plane off relatively easy and reach 28mph at WOT

with three people and gear I really have to work at planing off shifting people around, 75% of the time I have 3 people. Once I get on plane I can hit 26mph, but sometimes have to really work getting there

It looks like that is the stock BW prop. Boston Whalers website suggests you should be able to hit 35mph alone with the motor trimmed out. I would guess a prop of 2" of pitch less would help the heavily loaded situation.
