I have a SPORT 15 built in the late 1970's to early 1980's that we just re-powered with a 2012 E-TEC 60-HP. The engine is mounted in the blind holes, and this is what performance we get while using a SOLAS Amita 3 (12x17) aluminum propeller with two adults on board: RPM Mph Slip% 3300 17.3 13.3 4000 23.0 4.6 5900 34.5 3.0 3 adults and 2 children on board: [H]ow does this look for an aluminum propeller, blind hole mounting, and bottom paint? What kind of performance could I expect if i mounted the motor at the correct height, and used a stainless prop? Thanks! |

About 5mph more. I use a Stiletto 13 X 19 on a 2007 60 E-Tec on a 1977 15 sport sorta. |

With a Stiletto prop and the E-TEC you should be able to mount the motor all the way up, or one hole from all the way up. |

[H]ow is the [S]tiletto 19 with a full load of people and gear? [T]he 17 did not get on plane very fast with a full load. It bogged the motor slightly. [D]id you guys drill new bottom holes with the modified BIA pattern? [I]s there a lightweight jackplate that would be a better option? |

Boston Whaler predicted a speed of 34-MPH with 50 to 55-HP. I would say your current performance with a modern 60-HP engine is below expectation. |

I used a http://www.thmarine.com/products/Outboard-Jack-Plates/ Static-Height-Plates/Hi-Jacker-Fixed-Jack-Plate. [The outboard engine is now mounted] back 4-inches [from the transon] and up 3-3/4-inch [from the transom]. I re-drilled the boat side of the jack plate to match holes in the transom. I paid about $100 for mine. The largest load I have carried was 400-lbs of people, 60-lbs of dogs, a loaded ice chest and a push lawn mower. Still ran high 30's at about 5,500-RPM. |

Don't expect a lot of top speed out of that Evinrude 50/60 HP engine platform. See this Shootout comparative test, where the E-tec 50 ran 30 MPH vs the 4-stroke Merc 50 at 35 MPH. the E-tec was the slowest of all brands tested. http://www.bwbmag.com/output.cfm?id=2259109§ionid=315 It is running the equivalent of a "Bigfoot" pontoon boat gear case, which is too much prop and hurts top end speed. For better speed, Evinrude should offer a smaller gear case like the competition uses. The classic 15 Whaler does not need this Bigfoot gear case, which uses the same prop size used for the E-tec 130HP engines. |

Thanks LHG, but this motor does not have a bigfoot gearcase, it is the smaller 2.67:1 gearcase which swings smaller props. that is an interesting test though. i still prefer the etec because it is the only one that has any kind of useful warranty, and the diagnostic software is dirt cheap, which makes it the most serviceable new tech motor in my area (andros island, bahamas) I am interested in that static bracket, it looks like an easy fix to a buried motor. |

I have seen other hit 40mph with an ETEC 60hp mounted on the transom. One thing beside speed you gain is better drive ability. It will plane easier. The nose will not raise as much going on plane, and you not need trim the motor out nearly as much. My older 60hp Evinrude had a top speed of 36mph with a cheap prop and blind holes. With a jack plate was able to hit 44mph on a good day. |

Many thanks for the first hand information about the gear case on the E-TEC. You just can't always go by magazine test data. |

to clarify my statement before about the etec having the only "useful warranty", i meant that in my location, yamaha, merc and suzuki (didnt check honda) would need to have the motor sent to nassau for any service/ warranty work. most issues i will not need to do that because there is an evinrude certified tech here that can work with the dealer for warranty, and i would do the labor. obviously if it was an extreme case the motor would need to be sent back to nassau or the usa. |

also with regards to the magazine article, it lacks a lot of information, for instance: propeller choice and setup. which just from this thread it can bee seen that it can create a 5+mph difference. i also find it strange that the 4 stroke merc outran the dirty 2 stroke merc and yamaha. anyway, back on topic, i need this boat to be setup so inexperienced people can use it as it is kept at a rental property and guests/friends will be using it (not random guests, people that come year after year.) they may try to put 5-6 people and a cooler on this boat and i am worried that with the 19" pitch propeller it may lug the motor on those occasions. i guess we will just have to do a jackplate and see how far over-revved the motor is with the current 17 aluminum before making a decision. |

The BRP Raker SS prop is available in an 18 pitch, 13 1/2 dia. which might work well with your boat. You would need to double check that it is the correct prop for your motor. I think it is a 13 spline. If you decide to go with a Jack-plate, you could run a 20 pitch Raker and probably hit 40 mph and still have enough bottom end power. I would, however, keep the aluminum prop and put it on for when the Renters are using the boat. You would just need to lower the jack-plate (if you get one). The 17 would be handy for skiing too. |

After reading a little more on the Raker prop it might not be the right prop for a Whaler. I only suggested it because it is available in an 18 pitch. I have similiar performance numbers with my 13 footer with a 50hp Evinrude which also has the 2.67:1 ratio gear case. My 19 pitch revs 5300 RPM at WOT and I think a 17 would probably rev around 5700 RPM at WOT. |
