is a 40 HP Johnson 737 enough for a 16.7" Sport?

I've found a vintage 17' Sport (17' barehull with wooden low console) but i'm afraid my engine (1993 Johnson 737 GT, 40 hp ) would be too weak to make this boat plane...
What do you think?

Thank you very much

The minimum HP to plane a classic 16' - 7" Whaler satisfactorily is 35 HP so I would think your 40 HP Johnson would be fine.

Top speed should be about 26-27 MPH assuming the hull is not waterlogged and the motor is set up and propped correctly.

Loafing along at 25 MPH with an engine screaming at 5500 RPM would not be *MY* idea of fun.

Lanti24: you will be sorry, put at least a 70 hp engine on the 17....Take care

Tom: did not the 16'7" recommendation from the factory was a 40-100 hp...

40hp is plenty for most uses. Would not be enough if traveling far from the dock or taking all your friends out.

Thank you folks!

Anyway...
I've asked the same question to Boston Whaler directly thru facebook: Here is their kind reply, hope will help you too:

Official Boston Whaler Owner's Club:
Hi Giovanni - The minimum HP for a Vintage 17 is 35 HP. Your 40 HP engine will work, but, it may be a bit of a struggle for the boat to plane with two people. Hope this helps!

A Johnson 737 is a model name used in Italy, not the US.

Hi Clark and Tom...

Sorry i thought it was an international name...
It's the italian common name for a very popular engine in Italy during the 90's.
It's a two stroke three cylinder engine, with a displacement of 747 cubic centimeter.

Here they were sold with 25 hp homologation (this was the limit to cruise without a nautical license) but most of them had the limit removed so they could output 40/50 hp.

Ciao :)
