The new Mercury 150-HP outboard significantly outperforms the Yamaha F150 in this test:

but it does not match the Evinrude E-TEC for power and acceleration.

The pressing question is, where is Larry? This article has been posted for at least a day now and no word from Larry. I hope all is OK and he's just out enjoying his antiques cruising the canals of SW Florida.

It's been a while since there has been a head to head anything. Good for Evinrude. The Mercury still loses, but does better than the Yamaha and its at least fighting back.

It looks like in some areas, the gap between 2 stoke vs 4 stroke in weight and now performance is narrowing even more.

In the ongoing Evinrude battle of 2>4, the danger point for Evinrude is that the 4 strokes don't have to beat or dominate the two stoke, they just have to be close enough that consumers and salesmen say, its close enough.

I can see the compelling argument and the salesmen and boat companies saying, its really is time to just go 4 stroke and eliminate the hassle, the oil tank, the stigma in trying to sell and later resale the two stroke story

I wish the best for Evinrude, but its getting tougher all the time.

Its interesting in their full length video on the 150 they include not just the tug of war, but a drag race as well and a detailed explaination of emissions, winterizations and everyday advantages of torque.

Its a well done, full featured production, just for the 150. That displacement class is popular and competitive with 150 4 strokesa and Evinrude is serious in competiting and advertizing to stay in the fray.

Hang in there Evinrude.
