I have a 1962 13' with a 40 hp Johnson. I use it to fish on a couple of very large lakes north of the city where I live. I also like to fish on a smaller 400-acre lake that is closer to home, but I can't use my Whaler because the smaller lake has a 10 hp limit. I happen to have a very nice Mercury 5 hp two-stroke sitting in my basement that I used on an inflatable some time ago before I bought the Whaler. The inflatable is gone now, but I haven't gotten around to doing anything with the motor. It runs like a top. My question is, if I mount it to the transom of my Whaler next to the Johnson and take it out on the small lake, is it going to push the Whaler at all? Enough to get me from one end of a 400-acre lake to the other faster than I can swim? I have a tiller extension for it, so controlling the boat shouldn't be a problem. I guess there's really only one sure way to find out, but was wondering if anyone had tried pushing a 13 with a 5 hp.

I have a 1973 13 footer with a 1973 40HP Johnson and a 1973 2HP Johnson for a trolling motor. The 2HP does a nice job. Definitely faster than I can swim.

Check the specific regulations before you go to the time and trouble - you may well find that having the 40 on your transom is a violation, even if you weren't running it.

Hadn't thought of that, Tim, but glad you mentioned it. I'll check.
