I am currently having a new E-TEC 150 installed on a 1989 Boston Whaler Outrage 18, a stock boat with two batteries and stock 63-gallon tank. Got a decent deal as the E-TEC is actually a 2013 150-HP model and is counter rotating 25-inch shaft length. Installation is part of an Evinrude special where stainless steel propeller, rigging, and gauges are included. The dealer is to perform water testing and propeller selection. Are there choices of propeller brands that would be offered and covered under this rigging special by Evinrude? If so, preferences by the gurus as to what might work best on this combination. I have read many of the threads on here and understand what to look for concerning anti-ventilation plate level on plane as well as WOT engine speed. Main use will be fishing in Gulf running at fuel efficient plane. I would like good out of the hole performances to get on plane as I fish in skinny water a good bit. Any educated guesses and preferences on likely propeller and setting? Thanks |

Mount engine all the way up, three holes above the bolts. I ran a Viper 17 and did well above 3500. At 2800 or below in rough water would "fall off" plane easy. One battery and 1.8 gal oil tank in the stern as well as the bench seat. |

I would personally try the Viper TBX 14 3/4” x 19”, based on the article below and my experience that the Stilettos tend to run about 2-inches less than the SST/Viper with similar performance. http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/004957.html see also: --Rob-- |

Thanks for replies. I just went by dealer. It's ready. They put a viper 17 on it. Sea trial tomorrow. My old 150 would get me in plane at about 2400rpm. I will check it tomorrow. Thanks Here are pics of setup : |

Try a Rebel, too. The Viper is not a very efficient propeller at cruising speed. |

In the third picture it looks like that engine has been installed in every hole but 2 holes up. Why is that, was this engine installed on another boat? |

From the images you provide the present mounting height is one-hole-up. That is a good place to start, but you might find even higher mounting to be advantageous. On a very seat-of-the-pants approach, I would think a 19-pitch might be workable with your boat and engine. Regarding brands of propeller available in the promotion, I would suspect that only Evinrude branded propellers would be included. The best source of reliable information about the details of the Evinrude promotion is from Evinrude. |

Since the engine is a counter-rotating model, you will be limited to left-hand propellers. The range of models and pitches available may not be as extensive as with right-hand propellers. If you want to get good acceleration, good fuel economy, and run on plane at moderate speeds, try a REBEL model propeller. The REBEL has a lot of blade area, so you might try the 17-pitch. My impression of the VIPER propeller and its application is that use is intended for high-speed and lightweight boats. |

I agree with Peter, with a higher performance propeller like the Viper, which also has a modest amount of cupping, you can raise the engine without excess ventilation and decrease lower unit drag. If you were trying the SSP, then the mounting height would be about right. I'm very interested in this thread, please follow up with some performance numbers! |

I never even tried to adjust it when I bought it. It was setup by previous owner. Originally, my etec dealer mounted new etec to the similar setting I had on the boat. He then tested it and quickly changed and settled on where it is in pic after running the boat. As to motor, it was brand new. It was in the showroom on display. I have the printout during his setup dated yesterday for warranty. Printout Shows zero hours runtime. I'll try and scan when I get home. Dealer really recommends viper prop for my setup. I talked with him about what i want and my useage patterns a good bit today over the phone and at the weather shortened test run. I ran it briefly with a viper 17 today but weather prevented a good long trial. It really ran well with the viper 17 on it. Of course, I'm a novice and admit to also being in the "just happy to have a repower on my baby" mindset. After discussing with dealer about advantages and disadvantages with each( viper vs rebel) prop and my boat weight/setup ... I told him I would take his recommendation. As a novice and laymen, it's hard to go against a professional when he did make excellent points. Haha. This was not a waste of time for me, and I hope nobody that gave an opinion feels that way. What was your top rpm and speed with the 17" Viper prop? You mentioned that the weather wasn't the nicest, but did you get a full throttle reading by chance? |

A 150 with 1.87 gearing on an Outrage 18 generally requires a 19" prop. |

I was in a bayou so reaching top speed was not something I was comfortable doing. Seriously. Haha I did quickly run it up to @5200 a few times with what seemed to be PLENTY left to go . I just wasn't comfortable running in tight waterways with sharp bends to allow myself to run it any harder. I was able to drop it down to my normal cruising range rpm ( 2900-3200) without dropping off plane. The lack of ability to run smoothly in that lower range was my main concern with VIPER propeller after reading opinions. My boat seemed to ride fine. Of course, I haven't been in open water/waves yet in that scenario. I will get the max engine speed and boat speed numbers for you when I get it onto back bay. |

"A 150 with 1.87 gearing on an Outrage 18 generally requires a 19" prop." This is true for a motor with a 5500 RPM maximum. The E-TEC 150 has a 6000 RPM maximum so that rule doesn't apply. |

There are no model years anymore for Evinrudes, just like Yamahas and Mercs. Everything is by model number. What are the last 3 letters in the model number sequence on the serial number plate? |

Ran the boat yesterday... A few notes: 1- as recommended, the motor needs to come up at least one more hole position on the transom. The cav plate was underwater even at high rpm and trimmed out. 2. With 60 gallons fuel, full ice chest, fishing gear, and 500 lbs of people on board... Boat topped out at 46.2 mph with analog tach showing 5600rpm |

The E-TEC 150 is an awesome engine as you are finding out! Raise the engine when you get the chance and reseal the bolts after wards. |

With a light load and corrected engine height, you'll probably be just under the 6000 RPM maximum. Perfect if you usually have more weight and don't typically run WFO throttle. Good to know :-) |

I ran her today. I had 3/4 tank of fuel, 2 kids (70lbs each) and two adults ( 300 lbs total). I didn't run WOT, but I ran several longer runs at constant rpm settings. System check tach and Garmin [chart plotter with a GPS receiver] for speed. Long straight runs to decrease [error from the point-track method of speed deduced by the GPS receiver] and on calm water with no wind. I trimmed out differently each run trying to maximize efficiency but I tend to be conservative on the trim. 3000 rpm 21.4 mph. I took picture of lower in water at 3500 rpm. Yep, the advice offered at the top should have been taken: Mount the motor all the way up (two holes higher than it is now). The optimal WOT engine speed range for the E-TEC 150 is 5500-5600 RPM. You will need to exchange the 17" Viper for an 18" or 19" model to achieve this. |

On my Outrage 18, when I had the stock Evinrude 175, I tried many different prop combinations. Of course my use may be a little different, but I also wanted it to get on plane quickly, have a low planing speed and get as much hole shot as I could out of it. We use it a lot for skiing. Also a concern was sharp turns at the end of the ski course. What I found that worked best, and I worked with Tom Clark on this, was a Stiletto 15 Advantage. I also run a Cobra Edge Pro stainless steel stabilizing plate. Engine height is three holes up. I can plane as slow as 17 mph with a light load with no blow out on turns. Then I did a repower to a Yamaha F150 and had to drop a hole on the motor but used the same prop with excellent performance. We had to machine out the prop to fit the four stroke, but achieved the same results with the same prop. The two stroke seemed like they could run a hole higher. I've got a lot more use out of my baby since this thread was started. I decided to tinker a little with prop options. Just got a new Rebel 17-pitch. I still haven't raised motor up. I still have two holes I can go. I'm going to get really accurate data with my 17 VIPER. Then put on REBEL and see what [the boat] can do. My data will be better as I have a [NMEA] 2000 network with E-TEC and Garmin 547xs. I can now see extremely accurate speed, 10hz-update, digital RPM, GPH, MPG, and exact throttle position by percent. I will post results when I get the data. Then I'll try to get to raising E-TEC one hole higher. |

I am not sure your GPS receiver deduced speed is going to be more accurate. A GPS receiver deduces speed from the point-track method. I don't know that calculating the speed more frequently makes it more accurate. [I have made that topic the topic of another discussion] Speed as deduced from a GPS receiver is reasonably accurate for propeller comparisons, especially when made at almost the same time, same place, same conditions. |

I have been using her a good bit, but haven't gotten around to running for numbers and then changing props. What little time I have had, I fished in. The marsh. I had her in heavy seas coming back the other weekend and must say it was nice knowing my etec would not let me down. I will definitely record the numbers/data for everyone and also do the same with the rebel 17p prop. Thanks for reminder....
