What will be the fuel flow rate of a 2004 Yamaha 300 HP HDPI, running on a Whaler with a dry weight of 2,600 lbs and probably 3,500-lbs fully loaded and with persons, let's say cruising at 3,800 RPM? Maybe 14 GPH?

Hi Mike. As a starting point, you might look at the Yamaha Performance Reports. I'm not sure how close the match is, but one report done in 2005 using a Z300TXRC on a 23' Contender (2800# dry, 4058# tested) uses 12.1 GPH at 3500 RPM cruising at 30.5 mph.

As far as GPH is concerned, its irrelevant as to what boat the motor is pushing. If the motor is propped correctly to reach 5500 RPM at WOT, a 300 HPDI will burn about 10.5 to 11 GPH at 3500 RPM and about 13 to 13.5 GPH at 4000 RPM. At 3800 RPM, assuming propped correctly, burn rate should be under 13 GPH, somewhere near the 12 GPH.

Guys, thanks. I was about right then at 12-13, ouch. Sounds like $50/HR to me, not to mention I'm sure it drinks oil.

The fuel consumption rate in gallons per hour (or other units) is a good way to compare engines. It tends to remove the influences of individual boat applications where other measurements like miles-per-gallon are often used. Comparisons involving miles-per-gallon also include in their measurement many other factors besides the engine, such as the hull, the weight, the propeller, the sea state, and so on. When you look at engines and their fuel flow rate at a particular power level, you get a better representation of just the engine's performance.

You cannot really judge the engine power output on the basis of its crankshaft speed. A 300-HP engine could be turning 3,800-RPM and only be producing a small percentage of its maximum horsepower. The power being produced is dependent on the load on the engine at a particular speed.
