Eric this his will be faster (Red one) but I beg to differ...can't wait to see the comments. Thanks. |

Hello James! Both running hydraulic plates? Is Eric running stock foot? Hard to believe that I am seeing 44 GPS, alone, usually at least 12 gallons of fuel, 18 Ultras iced down in a 48 quart Igloo forward of console, fixed jack plate, and a 2005 F60! I guess its true. Difficult to break 50 without hull modifications? What do you say? zot. |

Zot, why bother, you have the skiff if you want to go fast. Whalers were never designed for speed, anyway. I reluctantly sold my class F Desilva runabout 3 years ago when I was able to run my age, 72mph. Family pressure, they said I wouldn't survive a crash. Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted. I still would like a ride in your skiff. I won't tell them LOL. I still have my helmet and racing life jacket. rich |

Zot, BMS lowers on both. Good to hear from you. I will be up at WW all week next week. Bink, its more fun to make things go fast that shouldn't, its the American Way. |

I guess all things are relative, my 34 Fountain hits 81 with absolutely no drama (I can hold my own beer). This little 15 Whaler at 50+ mph commands my entire attention, (you will have to hold my beer). Kinda like go-kart racing, 50 mph in your Lincoln Navigator, just isn't the same as 50 mph with your butt 1" off the ground. You know what I mean. |

OK, you guys are nuts. My brother bought me out of the Skiff. Raced one year New Jersey Outlaw Division and took first place. Blew a piston out of the side of the block after Rookie points. Engine is being rebuilt as we speak. My 1982 Boston Whaler 15 Sport may be for sale. Reconcentrating on 1988 15 Sport conversion to 15 CC. I will be hunting a Late model F70 in a crate because I have every missing part, sans prop. After purchasing a lagoon front home in Hernando Beach, Fla., I am also concentrating on the refurb. of my 1979 SeaCraft 20 Master Angler. And 4 plus years of my retirement!!! I'm TRYING!!! zotcha. |

I would think with all the mods on the one w the 90, it should bump well over 50 easily. Did you ever get that thing propped right? Last I heard you were under pitched on everything you had tried. Also . . . if you wanna squeeze every ounce out of it… once you get real close with the prop… box it up and have Mark Croxton of Marks Custom Propellers work his magic on it. You may not get much more… but balancing, blueprinting etc. will improve your drivability in those extreme conditions on that little rig. May also make it a tad less of a hand full and a bit safer to drive. I have a 5 year 15 Whaler project I'm close to unveiling . . . but I gave up my speed quest and went with a Yamaha F70. 40-ish is plenty for my driving skills. |

Eric does fine work, for sure. I would think the top speed for both those 15 footers will be pretty close to the same if the 115 inline Merc is pre 1984. Prior to that, hp was determined by crankshaft hp not at the prop. Back in '84 I had a 24'Aquasport side console boat I restored with twin '84 115 inline Mercs. A friend had the exact same boat with twin 1978 150 inline Mercs. Same props and identical top speed. rich |

Nice boats. I think the 90 might have the upper hand because the boat will be lighter and because of the lower gearcase on that 90. Plus, I think that 90 from Mercury is a bit of a sleeper. You guys sure do know how to make a guy miss his old 15' GLS. |

ASIDE: Your recordings are very weird. Are you shooting through some sort of mask around the camera lens? There is a bouncing black masking rectangle on the video that moves around as the boat bounces. Check the way you have the camera mounted. It looks like it is shooting through a window or mask, and the camera and window move relative to each other, creating that very strange (any very annoying) bouncing black mask on the recording. |

Youtube capture has a stablizing feature, that edits the video after its been recorded. I wonder if that is what is happening to his video. |

Ok, back on topic, Jim, see how flat the hull is running, this photo was taken at top speed in the photo trap on the river. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ejw0fwl52gemmey/ Photo%20Nov%2024%2C%209%2044%2036%20AM.jpg You can see how the strake modification lifts the entire hull out if the water, it also makes for I highly linear running/planing surface. It keeps the outer sponsons out of the water, and lets the hull air out. |

Look at the difference in these, the boat shakes at idle like an old Harley with a lumpy cam. Look at the difference in these videos of the old high-strung motor: DGoodhue was right. |

The boat looks very nice. I like the red tint on the engine cowling to match the hull. It appears to run very well. Now we need a chase boat video. |

Keeper, now you have got to tell me, what did you do to the cowl? Also, I finally think I might have the magic prop for this race, a rubber-hubbed 28" pitch cleaver, it hasn't arrived from the seller yet so I'm anxious. One of the fastest props I've run to date is a 24" cleaver, so I can't wait to try it. I'm hoping to try it this week if it comes in time. The truth is, the best all around prop I have tried is the very first prop that LHG sent me, which was a beautiful 26" Laser II. Since Larry sent me that prop and including this new 28" cleaver, I will have tried eleven props on this boat. The cleaver is a crazy prop on a small boat, not too useful for anything except idling or top speed. Anything but inching the throttle forward, results in 4,500 RPMs at 5 mph with the bow towards the sky waiting for the prop to bite. Top end acceleration once the prop bites, is amazing. Here was photo from yesterday of Eric running his Mischief: This is the new prop I haven't got yet. Hopefully (for top speed) it's the one! Starting to get colder here, and hopefully that stops soon. |

James, It's nothing nearly as cool or involved as what you did to your cowl. I mearly stripped the factory lettering and had my friend cut some vinyl lettering that was a bit more 'South Pacific' perhaps? I really think Yamaha's cowling graphics are pretty tired on their standard 4-stroke line. (Although I realize they have to cater to wide array of boats). They seem to do a lot more sporty version on their SHO motors. That being said ... I think they should capitalize on their 'Tuning Fork' branding ... That one seems timeless and would Carry over well to lots of different boat classes. I didn't put a lot of thought into it... In fact the more I look at it... The more I don't like it.... So I can always peel 'em off and have something different cut. I've already got a few ideas. |

Keep, I did custom laser cut 316L that was mirror polished. Very close to the same visual result can be had with mirror (metalized) vinyl for 1/500th the cost! I personally would use the tuning fork logo on the front of the cowl, and metalize the side graphics, and the HP rating on the back, that might be cool. I like the stand-alone tuning fork logo they used on the early R1 sport bikes. |

As far as speed in any boat, the criteria is "if you aint skeered, you aint having fun." My 14' antique runabout is more scary at 45 mph than my raceboat was at over 70. You need to set a number and work toward it. You may never get there but its fun trying. rich |

Bink, you are right, I am going to start to build a few motors and see what I can get most out of. I will probably build another 15 Mischief too, except, mine will have to be black. I know I need more cylinders, so I am going to grab a Yamaha V-4 and a Merc I-6 to play with until next summer. I will step up that timeline if I lose this race. But so far the "theoretical numbers" are stacking up in my favor. The modded 15 hulls can take speed, and a lot of it with little drama. These little boats are pushing into the 50's with confidence. So far so good. |
