I recently bought a 1998 23 Conquest that had the original twin OptiMax 135-HP engine, and I want new four-stroke-power-cycle engines. I've looked at 150-HP engines in every brand. I have spoken to Chuck Bennett at Boston Whaler about the weight of the engines. He assured me that the extra 100-lbs would not be a problem for a 23 Conquest hull. My decision was between Honda and Yamaha. I have decided that in my area Yamaha has a much better dealer network. My last decision is whether to just go for twin Yamaha 200-HP engines The new Yamaha F200 is actually a pounds lighter than the F150. The 200's are more expensive, but I am thinking that if I'm in this deep, why not go for the 200's? I've looked into the insurance for a overpowered boat, and found that over-powering really makes no difference and is not a problem. Can anyone think of any reasons not to put twin 200's on a Conquest 23?

Having twin 200-HP engines might actually be more useful. The acid test of a twin engine boat is the ability to reach planing speed on only one engine. Your chances of doing that are probably better with a 200-HP engine. |

I've compared quite a number of Yamaha test reports for the Yamaha F150 and Yamaha F200 (4-cylinder) on the same boat. I cannot see a significant difference between those two motor except at engine speeds in excess of 5000 RPM. Knowing how I operate my non-Whaler 24 foot walkaround with a pair of 150s on the transom, I think the amount of time that you will spend running your motors at 5000 RPM or higher is very low. As such, I personally would not spend the extra money on the F200s versus the F150s. A pair of F150s will be plenty of power for a Conquest 23 and should produce speeds close to if not in excess of 50 MPH. The only thing that the F200s would do that the F150s would not do is enable a higher top speed. Time to plane, time to 30 MPH and fuel economy will be substantially the same. |
