My friend has a 1996 with twin 150HP Johnson 2 strokes, likely 1996's as well. He will be using the boat partly as a rescue boat for a local volunteer fire department, hauling maybe 5 or 6 people, and operating in salt water in rough conditions.

The boat he has was ex RCMP, in excellent condition with very low hours, maybe 5-700. A very solid boat and fast as well, works well in fairly heavy seas in Mahone Bay, NS where I live.

He was considering new twin Yamaha 4 stroke 150's just because he likes Yamaha outboards.

The fellow who does his work is a commercial custom builder of fibreglas bottom RIBS, plus he does a lot of custom work for RCMP, US Military, and US Coast Guard. He builds larger ribs with twins. He builds top quality RIBS and makes his own tubes for the new builds and rebuilds. They are said to be stronger than a Zodiac, so he knows his RIBS.

He is recommending new Evinrude 130's with counter rotating props, he says they will perform better than the 150's on it now.

He asked me to check and see if experienced Whaler people had any thoughts on this setup.

Thanks,

Don

I should have said 130 Etec's, just to be clear.

Evinrude does not make a 130 anymore. They do make a V-6 135 and those would be fine, maybe not quite as fast as the old Johnson 150s but they will easily out-accelerate them and offer vastly better fuel economy.

Yamaha F150s would be fine too, but they will not offer the same acceleration punch as the E-TECs, 135 or 150.

I found this from back in 2009, twin 130 ETEC's on a 25 Outrage. I assume performance on a 24 Guardian would be very similar, with the added weight on the Guardian, would they be similar?

The 130's on this boat were not counter rotating, what difference does that makes, I am not a pro at this but it seems it would balance the torque load and make for a straighter push through the water?

When did they last make 130's in the Etec? Maybe these are new but unsold from last year? They would be a 4 cylinder as opposed to a 6?

What props would be good for this, I assume from the comments in 2009, a 4 blade?

What boat do you have? There is a 25' Guardian and a 24' Justice but no 24' Guardian.

Evinrude stopped offering the V-4 130 last year.

Counter rotating motors offer easier steering effort and marginally better performance.

I suspect your dealer has some leftover 130s which he wants to move, hence his recommendation.

The Guardian 25 is about 300-400 pounds heavier than the Outrage 25 and will be about 1.5 MPH slower, ceteris paribus.

Twin counter rotating 200 ETEC's, go big. Weight differential is negligible.

Thanks for the replies, as I said, not my boat, asking for a friend. It must be a 25 Guardian.

Advice depends on boat. If the boat is a 1996 Justice 24 with a 400 HP maximum capacity, then a pair of E-TEC 135 HO V6 is the minimum that should be on the transom. If your friend has a Guardian 25 with a 300 HP maximum capacity, then he can get away with a pair of E-TEC 130 V4s.
