I am rebuilding a 1988 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 25 Whaler Drive.I found a pair of E-TEC 225-HP engines for a good price, but I know they each weigh around 515-lbs, and the original two-stroke-power-cycle engines would have been around 475-lbs.I have read a lot of the past discussions on the subject [of repowering an OUTRAGE 25 Whaler Drive and the engine weight], and, I think, someone put the E-TEC 225-HP twins as an option.

I would prefer HPDI or E-TEC 200-HP engines, but Ican't seem to find a good pair for a good price. I did find a pair of MY2002 200-HP HPDI engines with a lot of hours; the weight differance is less than 100-lbs. Is re-powering with a pair of E-TEC 225-HP engines a viable option? I am looking fwd to some great discussions and advice duing the course of this project! Thanks

First, congratulations on having a fine OUTRAGE 25 Whaler Drive. That 25-foot boat has a great hull, and, with the extension of it by over two feet with the Whaler Drive, it must be a very capable open water boat.

A pair of 225-HP engines would be 450-HP total. I see that is what the Whaler Drive model is rated for. At first I thought that might be too much horsepower, but I believe you are okay. For curiosity's sake, what does the rating placard say on your specific hull about maximum power?

As for the weight, I believe an older OMC V6 3-liter with 25-inch shaft would weigh about 455-lbs. The present day E-TEC 225-HP 25-inch shaft is listed as 524-lbs. [Note; original version contained math errors which have now been conrrected--jimh] For twins, the difference is 910-lbs compared to 1048-lbs, or 138-lbs. This is an increase in engine weight of 15-percent.

Is having 15-percent more weight on the transom of the Whaler Drive than might have been on the transom back in 1988 when the boat was first set up going to make a significant difference in the trim of the boat or will the weight exceed some threshold of strength in the Whaler Drive? I don't know any method to determine this other than opinion or experience.

I don't have first-hand experience, so I will offer you my opinion, which is based on owning a 22-foot hull with Whaler Drive: I would not put a pair of big V6 engines on it. I would, as you have expressed, prefer the smaller displacement and lighter 2.6-liter engines.

The smaller 200-HP E-TEC engines weigh 433-lbs, and would make a total of only 866-lbs, or about 182-lbs less than the 225-HP models. I don't think you will find the loss of 50-HP will be a big drawback. According to specification, I think that hull can plane with only 115-HP. You should be able to get on plane with one engine, and probably do so even with the propeller pitch for twins.

I was thinking likewise on weight. I am not worried about losing 50-HP. I have been looking for a good pair of E-TEC engines for about six months, and I cannot find any in my ($15,000) price range. I found an older pair of 2002 Yamaha HPDI 200-HP engines with 1,750-hours. I may go that route. I was thinking of the 225-HP E-TEC engines because they are MY2008 with controls and gauges. Maybe someone on here has a set of 200's for sale?

Almost forgot, there is no horsepower placard. But I called Whaler, and spoke to a very knowledgeable fellow--cannot remember his name--who said 450-HP was the max rating. He would not offer an opinion as to the weight limit. CYA, I think.

Don Jahnke is putting twin 250 E-tecs on his 25 right now, he does not seem too concerned about the weight

Don has a Whaler 25 Walkaround which has a 550 HP maximum and is a much larger boat than an Outrage 25 Whaler Drive.

Back in 1988, a pair of 225's would put about 900-lbs on the transom. A pair of 200 HPDIs would put about 950lbs on the transom. That should be OK.

I have a 25-foot TEMPTATION (the Outrage hull) with Whaler Drive with Yamaha Ox66 250-HP engine, 500-lbs each, three batteries at the stern, and no problem at all.

I bought the Yamaha 200-HP HPDI engines. They were fresh rebuilds with zero hours, and were at a local dealer. The dealer put the Yamaha 200-HP HPDI engines on a computer. He ran them and did compression checks: all good! Now I am REALLY motivated to get some work done!

[Changed topic to solict advice on repairs to the hull and deck. Please start a new tread in REPAIRS/MODS to begin a discussion on hull and deck repairs. Thanks--jimh]
