Oh boy! You are gonna get every opinion. Here's mine: I had a 1979 Montauk (same hull) with a 90 HP Honda outboard motor. I loved that thing! JimL

Thanks, I have an old Johnson 90 hp two-stroke and a 6 hp Yamaha kicker on it now, figure to get rid of the kicker, so it will probably be fine.

At about 360 pounds [a HONDA BF90 is] a little heavy, but not fatally. Many [Boston Whaler NEWPORT 17 boats] had the OMC V4 engines which were about 315-lbs. We have an old 16=footer. We had also had an OMC 90-HP engine, and replaced it with a 50-HP. We have been extremely happy with it for our uses.

My 1986 Montauk is currently at the dealer getting a Yamaha F70, chosen mainly due to weight: it's only 257-lbs.
The old motor was a Mercury in-line 90-HP at about 300-lbs with jackplate at 40-lbs and 6-HP kicker at 60-lbs. That setup was good but did seem to sit low in the water, and I had an incident where water came over transom I would like to avoid in the future along with increased draft.
I need to keep the kicker and love the jack plate so I went lighter on the motor. No jackplate and kicker and the Honda 90 should be fine, but I would prefer an E-TEC or Suzuki 90 for weight.
By reports here the F70 should be able to fetch 38-MPH while my old 90 did 43-MPH ( and was 39-MPH before jackplate). Of course holeshot and time to plane won't be the same, but all report are adequate with the F70, even with a loaded boat.
This picture is very telling. The old Yamaha 90 is about 260-lbs while the 115 Ficht was 360-lbs plus the manual jackplate, probably 20-lbs.

I have a 1999 Alert 17. I had a Mercury 75-HP and a 9.9-HP kicker, both two-stroke engines, for a total of 386-lbs. Plus, the battery is also in the rear. I never had any problems other than 1.5 to 2-inches of water in the motor well at rest. Speed at WOT was 38-MPH. This winter the boat was re-powered with Yamaha F70 and Tohatsu 6-HP Sail Pro, making a total of 320-lbs. The heavier motors were never a problem.

Curtis -- Which Honda 90 are you asking about? What year?
The original Honda BF90A was really pushing the transom weight on the classic 16'-7" hull.
The newer Honda BF90D is significantly lighter and would be just fine.

Thanks, Honda 90 was a 1999 model, but I decided to pass on it and repower with a used Yamaha 2 stroke similar to the 90 Johnson on there now, but newer and the tilt works! Thanks again.
