Now that we have secured the 210 Ventura, it is time to re-power. The Yamaha OX-66 that powered it is gone, but the Yamaha rigging is still in place. My preference is to re-power with a two-stroke, primarily for the power-to-weight ratio, and a more simpler power train. I have been looking for a reliable 250-HP OX-66, but to no avail. I have found, though, a candidate 2004 LZ300C engine. Its dry weight is 543-lbs, about 20-lbs more than a 250-HP engine. I boat rather conservatively, so the requirement for it to produce the 300-HP would seldom come, but my thought is the less you require of its output, the longer it will last. I also like having an implied reserve power should I need it.
So what are your recommendations on the HPDI series? The reviews I have read seem to indicate that the second generation HPDI engines have been faily reliable. Is anyone here using the Yamaha HPDI engines on their Whalers, and how do you like them?
I have about $7,000 to spend on an engine, so I would like the best balance between age of the engine, its power and projected life, and price.

Do a lot of research first. The HPDI engines in the lower hp levels have a good rep, but the 300 in particular had issues for several years. I not sure of the exact years, though the fact that the engine has made it 10 years so far may indicate it is one of the better ones.
I agree 300hp is nice to have, I am getting ready to do the same thing on my Whaler

Ace, stay away from 300 HPDI. 200 HPDI was very reliable and a better alternative. VST very sensitive to ethanol and used May require cleaning.

I repowered from 225 two-stroke to 250 HP four-stroke on my 21 Conquest. Both motors I consider to have more than ample power I can use, most of the time.
