Topic: Revenge 22 Sterndrive Re-power with Diesel

I have a 1981 Revenge 22 with a Volvo-Penta 280 single propeller sterndrive and a 260-HP 350 Chevy. The engine was ruined due to getting water in it, so it is out of the boat right now. It actually worked pretty good overall, with plenty of power to get on plane and cruise at 26-MPH at 3,200-RPM. Wide-opent throttle was 36-MPH at 4,500-RPM. The outdrive isn't in good shape, so, with the cost of that plus the rebuilding of the motor, I have been looking into better options. I also have a complete Volvo-Penta 150-HP turbo diesel with a matching duoprop outdrive with power trim. That whole setup runs and just needs some cleanup and minor parts, and it is similar in size and weight to the current setup. Do readers think that the diesel will have enough power to get the boat up on a plane heavily loaded with camping and fishing gear and cruise in the mid-20-MPH range? I think that the torque is similar to the 350, and you can run the diesel continuously at 200 rpm below maximum, which would be 3,700-RPM. I like the safety and the economy of the diesel, and I think that a diesel-powered 22-foot Boston Whaler would be pretty cool. My other option is to either cut the transom down or build a bracket and mount a newer outboard on the back. Thanks for any advice.

Boston Whaler specifies 90-HP as the minimum power for the outboard version Revenge 22. Assuming a sterndrive version would be similar, it sounds reasonable to assume a 150-HP sterndrive would get the boat on plane.If the boat reached 36-MPH with a 260-HP engine and sterndrive, then the top speed with a 150-HP engine and sterndrive would proportionally be 27-MPH. I would be concerned about propeller selection for the Volvo-Penta Duo-prop sterndrive. Those dual propeller sets are very expensive, and I don't know where you'd find any sets of propellers in various pitches to test with. Selecting the propeller pitch for the dual propeller sterndrive by testing propellers may be very hard to accomplish. |

Re the 90-HP outboard rating for minimum power on a 22-foot Boston Whaler:Your 260-HP sterndrive only pushes the hull to 36-MPH, which is substantially slower than one would expect from an outboard powered boat with 260-HP. A Boston Whaler 22-foot Revenge with 260-HP of outboard engine on its transom would probably be able to hit about 45-MPH. Are the horsepower ratings for stern drive engine measured at the engine crankshaft? Or at the propeller shaft? |

What are the weights of the two stern drives and their engines. The weight delta will make a difference in performance. Someone with more experience evaluating power/performance of your Revenge will have a good idea of what you can realistically expect to achieve.Butch |

Jesse - I'm with Jim regarding the speed. For comparisons sake, I had a 25' Revenge with the closed cooling Mercruiser I/O package, 260hp GM block. I could hit mid-to upper 30's, lightly loaded. Regards - Don |

Is HP or torque more significant?The torque curve on the diesel and the old gas V8 would likely be similar. The torque would likely be at lower RPM on the diesel and it may have a broader range but fall off quickly at a lower RPM. For comparison, might be good to look at other planing hull boats that typically run gas and diesels where you can get good comparison data for performance and prop selection. May not directly transfer to your BW hull, but it could be of benefit. Don |

Thanks for the reply. The Volvo-Penta 280 outdrive doesn't have power trim and the drive and propellers don't look like they are really meant for high speed. I think that they won't achieve a top speed as high as a Mercruiser, and, since outboards are rated at the propeller shaft, have one less 90-degree turn in the driveshaft, and are typically mounted higher in a more optimal setting, I think outboards have an advantage there also. But, overall, this is the first sterndrive boat that I have had any real experience with, and it worked pretty well. It seemed like everywhere but wide-open throttle it was fairly efficient. At 8-GPH, 3,200-RPM, and 26-MPH I didn't think was too bad, and it wasn't affected very much by how much weight was on board. There isn't much weight difference between the diesel and the current gasoline engine; I think less than 50-lbs, so I don't think that weight will be a concern. I haven't been able to find any direct comparisons between gasoline and diesel engine performance, but I did find a 24-foot skipjack-type boat for sale with a 130-HP Volvo diesel and the same outdrive; I talked to [the owner]; he said it wasn't overly fast but had adequate power and had very good fuel economy. He said it topped out at 30-nautical miles per hour and cruised around 22 to 22 nautical miles per hour.I also have three sets of duo-props to test with, if I decide to get a duo-prop sterndrive.
