I plan to re-power my 1985 Revenge 25WT, which now has a Mercury 225 EFI, with an Evinrude E-TEC. I'm not sure whether to go with the 250-HP or the 300-HP model. I'm thinking the 250-HP would be adequate, however, the 300-HP is tempting because of the larger displacement.

The boat is primarily used for cruising, although I sometimes use it for salmon and lake trout trolling.

What are your opinions on the E-TEC 250 compared to the E-TEC 300 for this boat?

The 300 with its larger displacement and longer stroke has much more torque than the standard 250-HP Evinrude, especially in the midrange where it is important. That extra torque is what you need to power your Revenge.

Seahorse always gives top notch advice. So a 300 E-TEC is probably the way to go. We had a 1988 Revenge WT with a 250 OX66 Yamaha. It never lacked for power, even with 4-5 people and gear. A 300 would be awesome!

Go with the 300, I am having one installed this coming weekend.

The extra $1,500 over the 250 is nothing if you plan on keeping the boat for a while.

You need to hurry, though. March 31st is the end of the current promotion where you get free rigging parts and a six-year warranty. After the 31st you only get a three-year warranty.

Is there any significant difference in potential reliability or durability of the 300 compared to the 250?

Not really, the 300 is a 3.4 liter block while the 250 is 3.3 liter. The 300 will turn fewer rpms to achieve the same speed and will not have to work as hard to get the boat on plane.

Other than the displacement, both motors are very similar.

The larger displacement or 3.4-liter E-TEC engine models have dual oil distribution pumps. The 3.3-liter E-TEC engine models have the same distribution of oil, but only one pump.

Based on my personal experience testing both my own 25 Walk-Around and its 300 HP as well as a nearly identical boat re-powered with the E-TEC 250, I would choose the 250 E-TEC.

My boat will do 48 MPH, but with two gearcases in the water.

The E-TEC 250 powered boat will do 46.5 MPH. I would expect an E-TEC 300 on the same boat to be good for 50-51 MPH.

If hitting 50 MPH were important to you, you should buy the E-TEC 300.

If 46.5 MPH is good enough for you, save the money and get the E-TEC 250.

Either one will accelerate the boat far faster than you will ever need to.

While the teenager in a Sport 13 may spend a lot of time slamming the throttle down, most of us who own Walk-Through model do not tend to slam the throttle down because doing so will send our passengers over the transom. They don't like that.
