For my latest project I was given a very good, stripped Nauset hull. The catch: it had a giant hole from an impact running down the starboard side fom midship all the way aft. The interior was stripped. The boat is a clean [canvas] to finish as I like.
The damage is repaired. Now for the fun. I am going to use the boat just like my 13-foot boats, basically a troop/dog/cooler hauler from the house to the beach. I am looking for a 70-HP or a 90-HP with a tiller. I found a guy here locally with a lot of OMC 55-HP Enforcer engines he has refurbisheded. Will [a Boston Whaler NAUSET] be a total dog with only 55-HP behind it? The other 16/17 hulls I have had in years past had at least an 85-HP.

A 55-HP Evinrude is stronger than an original Bearcat 55 that was used in the 1960's, and it should be fine. A place in Campbell River uses 50-HP outboards to guide fishing guests and managed to get 30-MPH, even with three adults and gear. They used tiller outboards. Good luck!

The weight of the original 16' 7" bare hull was only 500-lbs. Many were sold with 50 to 55-HP outboards, and those were power-head-ratings in those days, not propeller-shaft-rated like they are now. The old 50-HP outboards are like today's 40-HP.

I'm not so sure I would would want to try and handle a tiller steer of more than 40hp and I think this was Whalers reccomendation as we'll.

I've seen tiller steered outboards up to 250 HP. I wouldn't worry about it.

Tom,
Those large tiller outboards will have some type of assist, hydraulic or otherwise.
Anything above 60 HP outboard steer would benefit from a steering system assist. You will be fine at 55 HP without.
