Is [the 175-lbs weight or the 50-HP of a 1972 Mercury 500 outboard engine] too much weight or power [for the transom of a] 1968 SPORT 13?

The rated maximum power is 40-HP, so 50-HP exceeds the maximum rating. There was no rating for maximum transom weight, so it is hard to say if 175-lbs will be too much.

The transom on my 1967 13 footer has held up with my 1973 50-HP Evinrude on it. My motor weighs around 185 lbs. I've used it now for 5 summers and pull the kids skiing and tubing and no problems so far -- touch wood. No additional stress cracks since I purchased the boat about 6 years ago.

I think the ideal motor for this boat is the older 35hp Evinrude or Johnson from the 70's and early 80's which only weighs around 120 lbs.
Note: People re-powering with newer 30hp motors weigh around 160 to 170 lbs so you are not too far off with your Merc 500.

Thanks Jim, that was the day we launched the boat for first time after fixing it up. My father-in-law thought I was nuts fixing up this old boat but it turned out nice. CW is a great resource for information.

The 13 must not have too maany hours on it. No stress cracks in the transom. Original rub rail, steering system, gel, etc. I suspect the 500 has been on there since 1972. I have a 86 Rude 20 and agree that series (20-25-30-35) would be dandy on a 13. Unforetunately, that motor is a 20 inch and on a pontoon.

I would just make sure everything is in good working order, particularly the old steering system. I replaced the wire rope with my original steering.
