Went with a buddy to check a 1997 OUTRAGE 17 with a 2008 Mercury Verado 135. The engine is huge. At 510-lbs is it too heavy?

Did you sea trial this boat? I think it may be very stern heavy with that Verado. I have seen this boat setup with a 115 v4 johnson and the static trim was level. I know that many were rigged with 135 to 150 OptiMax motors when they left the factory which weighed nearly 100-lbs less than the Verado.

In the link above there is a post with the same boat rigged with an E-TEC 135 V6. Read this; if you haven't yet you will get some idea of the boat's performance regarding stern weight, with the exception that the engine is much lighter than the verado.

I bought the same boat new, but with a 115 V4 Johnson which weighs 319-lbs. The static trim is level. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Have yet to sea trial. That is the next step. Will be interesting. It does have trim tabs. Thanks!

I have a 1994 Outrage 19 with a 405-lbs engine. It still has porpoising problems. My opinion way too heavy. I have tabs, which help, but I don't think it would take care of everything you would need. Navy or black 150 E-TEC would be perfect for that boat, weighs 420 lbs.

That boat will be much too stern heavy and could have porpoising issues at speed as mentioned above. Also in a following sea it will have a much greater tendency to take water over the stern.
There is no way I would want a 135 that weighed 500 lbs on an Outrage. For that weight you could have a 250 E-Tec!
