On my 15-foot Whaler, what would you expect the performance difference to be running a 50-HP two-cycle outboard over a 40-HP four-cycle?

About 3- to 4-MPH, or 34 to 30.

My 1987 15 SuperSport ran to a top speed of 36 MPH consistently with one person and one 6 gallon full gas tank with a 1988 Johnson 48 SPL mounted all the way down turning a 17 inch pitch aluminum OMC propeller. Same boat ran to a top speed of 42 MPH consistently under same setup with a 2003 Yamaha 70 turning 19 inch pitch aluminum Yamaha propeller.

My 1976 SPORT 15 with 1976 Mercury 500 (50-HP powerhead rated) ran about 33 to 34-MPH top speed.
