This looks like an interesting alternative to the traditional 3' VHF antenna. www.shakespeare-marine.com/antennas/galaxy/5415.html I'm wondering if anyone has seen one in-person and / or has thoughts on its advantages / disadvantages relative to a traditional 3' base-coil antenna like the Metz.

That antenna uses a loading coil to shorten the length of the radiating element. This will always tend to lower the efficiency of the antenna. In some applications it may be worth the trade off in efficiency to shorten the whip by a foot.
