I have a 1995 Evinrude Intruder. I'm using a teleflex gauges. There are four wires in the back and I have no idea what goes where. Just bought the boat. The wire colors are black, purple, blue, and grey. Help me with this, please. Thanks

If the wires follow the usual marine electrical wiring color code, you can deduce their function from the color code. However, it would be prudent to trace the wires and see what they connect to.

Please trace those wire in your boat and give us the details of what they connect to. From this we can tell you what to connect them to on the tachometer.

If you want to make a leap of faith and assume that those wires are connected according to the usual color code, you can find the color code information in the REFERENCE section. See:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/wireColorCode.html

Once we have identified what these wires are for, we will need to know what terminals are on the tachometer.

Please tells us what terminals are on the tachometer and how they are labeled.

If you have a Teleflex gauge, they have an extensive website with all sorts of great information about their products. I am sure you will be able to look up the instructions for this gauge on their website. The URI for their website is:

http://www.teleflexmarine.com

By the way, I located their website using GOOGLE.COM. It is a great way to search for information on the worldwide web.

You ought to take a look at the comprehensive information available on the Teleflex Marine website. They're probably the manufacturer of your tachometer, and they have gone to a great deal of effort to create their wonderful website to help support their products. For example, there are dozens of articles available about troubleshooting gauge problems. The index is at:

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/cgi-bin/frameset2.cgi?site=gauges&type=us& link2=1047

The information most applicable to your problem is probably contained in this document:

OUTBOARD ENGINE TACHOMETERS
4 THROUGH 12 POLE ALTERNATORS

http://ww2.tflx.com/pdf/obtach%7E1.pdf

For more information about permanent magnet alternators, see this article in the REFERENCE section:

Permanent Magnet Alternators
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/PMA.html

I'll standby for that information you need to give us to further help you. Good luck tracing the wires, and I hope the labels on the back of the tachometer can still be read. Let us know what you find.

Here is another document that will explain in more detail how to install and connect a tachometer made by Teleflex Marine to most outboard motors. Again, this comes from the website of the Teleflex Marine company and is listed in the index of documents I mentioned above.

http://ww2.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf

This document is a bit more comprehensive that the other one.
