The new Humminbird 787c (not the 987c) is an unusual unit. It has a mode when using the Humminbird quadrabeam transducer that results in a poor man's side scan sonar. No, it is nothing like the clarity of the 987 but it does show side detail. Yes, it is in the owner's manual. A few weeks ago I got to see it in action on my friend's Trophy. Faux sidescan, not like the 987 but suprisingly useful. Humminbird sells these for under $700. In fact, they had a rebate a few weeks ago. We are divers, not fisherman, but obviously being able to see to the side is useful when looking for fish. If you don't want to spend $2,000 on the 987 then this may be the hot ticket. J

I think that requires an optional transducer.

Yes, it does require the optional quadrabeam transducer. I have not priced one but I bet you can still get the package with considerable savings over the 987c. Have you seen one in action?

No, I'd just helped a guy pick electronics for a new-to-him
whaler recently and remembered that an optional transducer
was required. Looks like it's about $80.
