I was wondering what it takes to be able to see the AIS outputs of other vessels on a Garmin Chartplotter either the 492 or the 498 series. Thanks, Victor

A VHF antenna, an AIS receiver, and somebody who knows how
to hook them together.

There are widgets that allow you to share an antenna between
your VHF radio and your AIS receiver, but I'd use a separate
antenna (I don't like the idea of feeding 25 watts into a
receiver).

The 492/498 series does not support NMEA high speed data exchange required by AIS receivers.

I downloaded the 492/498 manual before I posted. Page 25 says
it supports AIS and NMEA at 38400 bps. Now the fact that it
only has one NMEA port will make it difficult to communicate
position to your DSC VHF radio (a NMEA hub would be required).

Thanks for the information.
