Does the factory installed Mercury 115 FOURSTROKE on the 2008 Boston Whaler 190 Montauk include the SmartCraft harness? Can I add any SmartCraft gauges? Thanks--Fred

Nope, sorry. Not SmartCraft compatible. [Answer in dispute--jimh]

"Can I add any Smart Craft gauges?"

Yes. The Mercury 115 Hp FOURSTROKE is Smartcraft compatible. You will need an appropriate Smartcraft gauge and wiring harness.

Well, I'm confused. Two different Mercury publications are in conflict. A sales brochure omits the 115 four stroke when citing Smartcraft availability, saying the 40-60 four strokes, 75-250 Optimaxes and all Verados are, but omits four strokes above 60. Yet another, dated roughly the same says that it is compatible with the 115.

I surrender.

Check this page out on Mercury's website. Your motor is indeed Smartcraft compatable.

Thanks Seabob, all I have to find out is what type of harness for the specific guage I want is needed on my engine. I think that Merc could have made this process much easier for the cistomer so I could buy what I need faster.

Thks to all again,

Fred

Fred, I can get you a twin Gauge setup, Tach and Speedo, Smartcraft, with harnesses and junction box, for around $550. Have to have room for both (4" dia.) though. PM for details.

Seabob:

I am interested in the Smartcraft SC100 seven-function gauge. I think this replaces the alarm function as you can see what part of your engine is malfuncting or at least thats what I think it does. What type of harness would I need just for this instrument?

Thks,

Fred

Fred,
Let me get back to you on Monday and see if I can get you a single gauge with all the harnesses you need. Sound good? BTW, where are you located?

The confusion regarding the compatibility of the 115-HP Mercury FOURSTROKE engine with SmartCraft is due to the ambiguity in the model naming. Mercury has sold two distinctly different engines with the exact same model name, 115-HP FOURSTROKE. The engines sold prior to c.2007 were actually made by Yamaha. Mercury bought and sold thousands and thousands of four-cycle engines from Yamaha and sold them under the Mercury name. These engines had electrical systems which were not SmartCraft compatible.

In about 2007 Mercury began to sell a 115-HP FOURSTROKE model that was a completely new and totally different engine, but they never changed the model name. They also eliminated any model year reference. So there is a great deal of confusion and ambiguity about identification of these motors. (For an example of this, one need only look above where Mercury's own literature confuses bdb.) The best way to describe them is as the "Veradito" motors, because they are petite models of the VERADO motor. They are in-line four-cylinder four-cycle motors with an engine block that is based on the VERADO dimensions, but without the forced air injection. Whaler invented their own model name for them, the "L4NA" or in-line four-cylinder naturally aspirated. The cowling shape is also very distinctive. The Veradito motors have a tall cowling with a rounded top.

The Veradito motors are SmartCraft compatible. I do not know of any literature that explains how an owner can retro-fit SmartCraft instrumentation. If there is any literature from Mercury that explains how to an owner can install his own SmartCraft instrumentation system and perform any set-up procedures necessary, a pointer to a source (URI) of that literature would be very much appreciated.

Jim has brought up a good point. Fred, make sure of the model year of your motor. It is not unheard of to have an '07 motor on an '08 boat. The model year will be on your warranty paperwork for the motor and also on the S/N plate on the engine mounting bracket, starboard side.

The engine plate tag states quite clearly that it is a 2008 model year.

Then it is most definitely compatible with the Smartcraft gauges..

Fred--Sorry to inform you but Mercury has no such thing as a "model year." Mercury eliminated all model years after 2006. You just have a 115 FOURSTROKE, and no model year. The date of manufacture may be shown, but there are no model year designators for Mercury outboard motors.

Thks Jim, I do know about the elimination of the model years from Merc but at least we will know when the engine was manufactured.

I know my March [2008] 90-HP FOURSTROKE is SmartCraft compatible; that was one of the first things I looked at under the cowling when I purchased it. The SmartCraft connector is on the starboard side, near the rear of the engine, and is plugged with a cap that says "terminator". I would think that if my 90-HP is, your 115 should be as well. And i agree..Merc's differing info about what is and what isn't SmartCraft capable is confusing. And I don't know about you..but I haven't found a dealer yet who knows anything definite about SmartCraft on the smaller engines.

As for model year designations, there are some states that still require the MY for registration and titling reasons. My home state, South Carolina, is one of those states, and my engine title clearly says "model year 2008", as did the MSO I received from the dealer.

And the poster above is correct about documentation; I can't find ANYTHING about how to tap into the [SmartCraft] system, aside from some very general stuff found in my Northstar 657 installation manual. Exactly what you need , and how much of it, seem to be something of a mystery.
