The digital land maps from Lowrance called TOPO INSIGHT PRO 2013 EAST and WEST have just come to my attention. Lowrance has two digital map packages of the USA, split approximately by time zones, with EAST covering the Eastern and Central time zone states, and WEST the Mountain and Pacific time zone states. The map packages are $99 and can be activated on four devices. I suppose in theory that means four people could get together, buy one license, and install the maps on four different Lowrance chart plotters, sharing the $99 cost among themselves. The maps are said to be intended for off-road and ATV use. The maps contain topographic data in 30-foot elevation contours, which are said to display in a manner similar to depth contours for bathymetric data on a chart plotter. The maps also show streets and road, parks, points of interest, and other data. The map packages can be purchased on-line and immediately downloaded. The file downloaded is about 1.3-GB size. At the time of the download you have to input the "content ID" and serial number of all the products on which you intend to use the maps. (If intended products are registered with Lowrance under different owners, I wonder if there will be a problem.) The maps are said to only work with specific systems. As you might expect, on a computer they are said to only work with the Windows operating system, and then only with certain versions. On Lowrance hardware, the maps are said to work with: --Elite-5 HDI See the INSIGHT store website for details about the download and purchase process. The TOPO INSIGHT PRO 2013 EAST and TOPO INSIGHT PRO 2013 WEST maps can apparently also be purchased from the usual retailers, such as WEST Marine, and would apparently be provided on a MicroSD memory card. I found some discussion about purchasing, downloading, and installing the maps via the INSIGHT store website. Based on that discussion, it appears to be better to just buy the pre-loaded memory card from Lowrance through a retailer. See the discussion on the fordraptorforum.com for more details. |
