In the USA the FCC requires all fixed-mount VHF Marine Band radios sold at this time to conform to the specifications for digital signal calling as recommended in ITU-Rec. M.493-13. It is very common that input of the position data be done automatically and electronically by connection of a GPS receiver, and the connection is typically accomplished using the NMEA-0183 protocol. It is essential that manufacturers provide information on the configuration of the NMEA-0183 port on their DSC radios if such an interconnection is to be made successfully.

It appears that among some VHF Marine Band radios made by Uniden the actual NMEA-0183 signals and wire colors found on the radios are at a variance from what is shown in the printed and on-line technical literature provided. According to one boater who recently encountered this problem, Uniden is now advising boaters who contact their technical support services that on some of these radios the correct designation of NMEA-0183 signals and wire colors is as follows:

NMEA NAME UNIDEN NAME WIRE COLOR
---------------------------------------
TALKER A NMEA TX/Out(+) YELLOW
TALKER B (not provided)
LISTENER A NMEA RX/In(+) GREEN
LISTENER B NMEA RX/In(-) ORANGE
SIGNAL GND SHIELD Uninsulated

The above configuration is believed to be accurate for the Uniden UM380 radio, and is said to apply to models which do not employ a wire with WHITE insulation in the accessory cable.
