My wife Cheryl had been after me to standardize our helm electronics. She is my primary fishing partner and offshore adventurer so it made sense to move to one vendor. We decided to go with Garmin because she felt the functionality and displays were easier to use and understand. I have nothing but good this to say about my Simrad NSS8 is served us well. We chose a Garmin 741xs and 840xs as our MFDs connected by a network and N2k backbone to a Garmin GCV 10 DownVu/SideVu sounder and Meteor 300 entertainment module. We added two ICOM vhf's an IC 506 vhf/dsc/ais/n2k and a small foot print IC 400ss both use the IC 195 Command Mic IV. Before ....... Nice-looking install. Personally, I don't like mixing and matching electronics manufacturers. You would have done well with either SIMRAD or Garmin. If you aren't running a RADAR, why two displays? |

We're offshore fisherman and use the 840 as our FF & the 741 for navigation. Redundancy also. |

The kind of fishing Tom does requires a good sonar, and good bait. Nice rig, Tom. What did you do with the Simrad hardware? |

Your decision to use two devices from the same manufacturer seems to me to be a sound one. If using two devices from different manufacturers, you'd have to be familiar with two operating systems and two user interfaces, which might not be easy to keep straight. With one brand on the boat, the two devices should have very similar operating systems and user interfaces, and the chance for operator error ought to be lower. Also, with two devices of the same brand, there are probably more opportunities to link them together electronically to share resources. For example, you might be able to share a common chart package on a memory card between the two, or some other enhancement of resources from being of a common brand. |
