The Lowrance HDS GEN-2 series seems to be in the process of being cleared out by retailers. WEST MARINE just announced a rather attractive offer for the HDS-5 GEN-2 bundled with a 50-kHz and 200-kHz transducer for only $350. The transducer is worth about $100 alone. The model being promoted includes the Nautic Insight™ US coastal mapping pre-loaded charts. They usually are $50 to $100 above the base unit. With the cartography and transducer bundle, you have quit a bargain available here:

I am sure you can find similar deals, but this WEST MARINE offer is a good bellwether for the sort of discount from retail now available on these HDS GEN-2 non-touch devices as they are being cleared out of inventory.

Ignoring completely the GPS receiver, chart plotter, and digital cartography; and ignoring the modern SONAR with better-than-baseline transducer provided; and concentrating only on the multi-function 5-inch color display that can show NMEA-2000 engine data, this Lowrance HDS-5 Gen-2 is about the least expensive color NMEA-2000 engine data display that you can buy. It might be a bit larger than dedicated NMEA-2000 displays, but it is less expensive than most of the color models, and by quite a bit.
You know, I am almost talking myself into buying one of these!

That was Westmarine's Fantastic Friday 1 day promotional sale. Too late if you didn't act on Friday.

Oh well, I didn't buy one on Friday. It is just as well, as I was re-thinking the decision and was starting to talk myself into buying one. I didn't really need one, but it was such a bargain.
I think a price in that range may still be found on some of the HDS Gen-2 non-touch devices from various places. Dealers probably won't be able to sell them for the usual MAP prices once the third-generation HDS-Gen-3 devices become available in a few weeks or months. Big stocking dealers probably do not want to have a lot of inventory of Gen-2 non-touch products hanging around.

Lowrance has a nice rebate offer in effect since February 6, 2015 and running until May 3, 2015, which gives a buyer a rebate on the purchase of any HDS Gen2 Touch devices. There are three tiers of rebate:
--a $100 rebate for buying any HDS Gen2 Touch
--a $200 rebate for buying any HDS Gen2 Touch and LSS-2 bundle
--a $300 rebate for buying buying any HDS Gen2 Touch with a variety of other accessories, including the POINT-1 GPS receiver and heading sensor.

At the moment, the Lowrance website still shows the following tiers of HDS products:
--HDS Gen2 in 10, 8, 7, and 5-inch models

Here is another bargain on a Lowrance HDS Gen2 series multi-function display:
Cabela's are advertising the Lowrance HDS 7 Gen2 with 83-kHz and 200-kHz skimmer transducer, with Insight map bundle for only $600, a $500 reduction from the normal price of $1,100. See

Cabela's also has a price reduction on the Lowrance HDS-9 Gen2 Touch, one of the units that qualifies in the rebate offer mentioned above. Cabela's are selling the HDS-9 Gen2 Touch with no transducer but with Insight mapping for $1750, a $700 reduction from the usual price of $2450. There is at least a $100 rebate on top of that, so the end price will be about $1650. That is an $800 markdown from the previous retail price. See
