Another penninsula dweller huh? We live in Ephraim from May-Nov. Where about do you live? I organized last years event, and there has been talk about a repeat. Last year was quite fun, and we had about 25 attendees, and I believe about 10 boats - some from Minnesota and Illinois. Brian |

Yeah Outrage, I live in Sturgeon Bay. I've lived here all my long wonderful 25 years. I have a 67 Nauset. I'm in the middle of refinshing all of the wood right now. I actually worked a couple of blocks from your house all last summer. I rented pontoon boats right acrossed from Wilsons. Where do you keep your boat? I'm sure I've droolled over it at some point. I very interested in coming up and checking out all the other Whalers this summer. I bet yeah I've seen almost everyone in the county. Duckfish |

I kept the boat at the Ephraim Yacht Harbor. It was in the slip on the first left corner as you walked out the gas dock. You can see a picture of it on catecea page 45. But, I sold it at the end of the season. If you look at the main picture of my boat, you can see the Bertram I bout to replace it in the extreme left corner of the picture. I will not be docking at that marina anymore. I have moved to the new marina that Yacht Works is building. Floating docks, breakwater, paint, upkeep...you get the idea. I am sure you spotted the other Nausset at the EYH. It is in faulous condition, and just got repowered with a new Yamaha 4 stroke. It is owned by the same guy that has the 41' Chris Craft commander called "Waverider" that is also at EYH. Brian |

Outrage- Yeah I know the dock your going to. I work for the cable company that is putting the cable to all of the slips. I have seen the entire plan and it looks really nice. The only thing that I was wondering was how they got the permit from the DNR when they won't let any private owner put in any docks up and down the county. Duckfish |
OutrageMan |
posted 01-15-2002 04:22 PM ET (US)
They were sort of grandfathered since they already had a marina. The DNR is basically taking the stance that this is just a renovation/upgrade of existing slippage. |

Door County rendezvous would be a great idea, Outrageman & family is welcome on board our boat. His current boat is funding the development of the local marina in Sister Bay and may not be out of the shop in time to sail. |

Larry, Short answer- no. But I do have an excuse! We are expecting Junior/Juniette Sulser in mid-April. We found that out shortly after the rendezvous. Deb has informed me that she will be more comfortable with a baby on a bigger boat (honest- she said this!) with better amenities and more sleeping room. So now I am in a quandary on what to do here. Either I sell my current one and upgrade, or put the Yamahas on it and take my chances, or leave it the way it is for a summer to see how things go. I was at the Milwaukee show this weekend and looked at the only other boat I would consider other than a Whaler, if I upgrade. It's a Pursuit 2870 Walkaround, which I really like. I am between this and the new 275 Conquest (I know these are not classic Whalers, but I at least would stay in the club since I do have the 1988 13' SS). Any sage advice is greatly appreciated! Back to the topic at hand. If anyone wants pictures from last year go ahead and e-mail me. I got them developed in digital format so I can e-mail them back. Larry, I need your address as I got a few good shots of your boat especially. No dates as of yet, but we had better act fast so that we can get the slips we need. Some transients book their slips up to a year in advance. Getting a slip on the NW sinde of the Door, can be as tough as getting a camping spot in Penninsula State Park. I reccomend late July or early August. The weather is much more predicatble, and favorable. Plus the water has warmed up to about 39 degrees by then. Brian |

Milwaukee, Lots-a-luck on the 19th of April! Washington Island ferry had to call the CG ice breaker in last week to free them and cut a path! Reportedly some of the ice shelves were at 8'. Took most of the day. This morning it's about 8 degrees...winter just won't let go. I think we're makin' ice, not melting it. Something really hot has to happen to meet your date. For getting ice as late as we did, it sure did take hold. The ice breaker was supposed to try to open the middle of the bay down to Green Bay, and I don't know the status of that. It's surprising how badly the docks have been damaged by this year's ice...pretty major everywhere you look. I don't know if I can hang on! Prozac's gettin' low. Another slippage option could be the brand new Yacht Works Marina just north of the municipal docks. Floating piers, gas, power, boat yard, and one of the best stocked ship's stores in the county. Plus as last year, I might be able to arrange another 10% off purchases at the store for rendezvous attendees. As they are brand new, I am not sure about transient costs, or even if slips will be available, but its sure worth a call. I believe that "duckfish" even worked on the cable for the docks, so he can tell you that it is going to be first class all the way. You can see their new harbor @ BTW this is where I am docked now instead of Ephraim Yacht Harbor. Brian |

I doubt anyone has made any reservations yet. It just seems too long away to worry about now. Again, I can not stress strongly enough that it is a poor idea to wait. If everyone that attended last year knew what Quinn Brennan had to do to get the few slips he did, theey would have tried to make reservations for this year at that time. It is damn near impossible to get a slip here on the weekends. On another note, I am currently writing this from the Door (not here for the season yet, just a few days - will be here about 5/18). The Great Lakes Weekly Level Report claims that we are currenly 9" above this time last year. I have a hard time believing that. I certainly don't see it. If you are interested, you can read the report here... http://huron.lre.usace.army.mil/levels/weekly.html Also, if you want a current picture of the Sister Bay water from a camera that is mounted on a building at the marina I mentioned before, click on the link below. About this time of year you can see the ice start to go out. You can even watch the progression of work for the new marina. http://www.yachtworks.net/stormcam.htm Brian |

Okay you guys, get on the ball. I just called and reserved our slip for the 11th through the 13th. I asked the MM how many slips he had available for that weekend and told him 'we' might need as many as a dozen. He immediately asked me, 'Is this that Boston Whaler group?'. So, they're waiting for us, and there are still plenty of slips available. We are in slip 48. Dave |

MW, As I write it's 24 degrees. New dusting of snow when I awoke. It appeared yesterday as though there may be some open water west of Horseshoe Is. but I can't be sure. Haven't spoken to anyone who's crossed on the ferry this week, so I don't know the situation there. Can see some massive ice shoves out several miles on the bay. As for a slip, just for the day, won't be necessary. And there are enough of us here to arrange something for you (trailer storage etc.) should your plans change that day (ask Johnny Sherman.) Is the weekend of July 12-14 set in stone? As you may have noticed, some of our Michigan boating friends, including JimH, now have something going on the same weekend in Port Huron, and they can't change theirs, even though you guys picked the date first. MN/WI people would probably not be interested in this anyway, but for others around the bottom of the Lake, half-way between each, it could be a conflict. However, don't change any plans just for me. This weekend is just bad timing for me this year, coming so close on my return from a 4000 mile BC roundtrip drive, and I could miss both events anyway. |

Well dad, I think you could charge what ever you want. Just remember that being towed by a Bertram is twice the cost of having a ride in a Whaler. As far as the date of the rendezvous goes, abot half of last years attendees were locals, so it won't be difficult to find a good time. However, it seems as if some have already aquired slippage for specific dates. So lets try to stick to that time as not to make things difficult. I am still willing to have a few trailers parked at my place, and Kate and I would be happy to host another Saturday night party. Brian |

I have made the trip in my 25 Outrage. It's a nice run in good weather, and not as far as it seems, but I would recommend either twin engines or the company of another boat. You won't see anyone out there, and you're out of sight of land for the middle 15 miles of the trip in clear weather. Really on your own. Departing Death's Door, it's about 42 miles out to un-inhabited South Fox Island, one of the most beautiful places on Lake Michigan with it's towering sand dunes. Then it's about another 22 miles into Northport. This is Great lakes offshore cruising at it's best. And great Steelhead fishing out there in the middle also. A really interesting, but agressive Rendezvous run, for Whalers 18' and over, and with a calm day's forecast, would be to run over to South Manitou Island, 42 miles, and back. S Manitou is a wonderful place to spend part of a day. It's part of the Sleeping Bear National Seashore, and spectacularly beautiful, with a ranger station, facilities, and great beaches, dunes and hiking. But no fuel, so the Whaler would have to be capable of handling about 100/120 mile fuel range. This would be fun, and I can be talked into this anytime, weather permitting. Launching at Bailey's Harbor would be a real shortcut. |

Older and Wiser Brother(Harpoon Harry) and younger(on Oregon Gold)Nephew,(Outrageman), keep in mind that if there is any towing that needs to be done I should have the necessary ropage!! There will also be more Bertrams around after the Door Cty. Rendezvous. door prizes are drawn. First place is a Bertram and second place is 2 Bertrams. |

That really hurts. You know I try to be a good nephew. I don't take cheap shots, and I don't try to hurt peoples feelings. It would just be nice if everyone in my family would do the same. Sulking, |

If you are planning on attending, aren't staying on your boat, and haven't reserved a room yet... I just called to reserve our room and apparently rooms all over the area are going fast for that week. We're staying at the Village View Motel (same place as last year). Dave |

OK Outrageman you got me, just remember there is a difference between trying to be a good Nephew and being one,..... enough dribble! Outrageman, Harpoon Harry(Harry this might be the first time your hearing this), and yours truely are going to have a surprise fry at the cookout on Saturday Night. If anybody gets any Roadkill enroute please bring it along!! Jim |

The fry is going to be great. Everybody had better bring their appetities for good old deep fried Wisconsin food. Brian |

If I can bring something let me know. Usinger's (Brats and Sausages) is right around the corner. Also plenty of specialty brews here in Milwaukee. I am now taking orders! I have been looking forward to this Rendezvous since I found out I couldn't make last years event. Are you guys expecting snow this weekend? |

Milwaukee- No we are not expecting snow this weekend. It better not snow because I'm in the Bass Tournament this weekend and I don't want to break out the duck hunting jacket until October at the earliest. duckfish |

Milwaukee; As Duckfish says, no snow this weekend. Actually heard some pretty exciting news that summer is going to be on the weekend of July 13th and 14th this year!! |

Duckfish, good luck in the Bass Tourney, you may want to bring that jacket along just in case. Weather channel is calling for highs in the mid 30's. I just got back from an evening of trout fishing. I am out off the Milwaukee breakwater surrounded by huge charter boats trolling 15 rods each and my little Montauk out-fished them all. Three hours, two Browns (one 18lbs) two Cohos and one King. Not much size to the salmon but it sure was a fun evening. I would still rather be fishing smallies in DC.~mw |

Mil- I was out fishing all day today. Only got a few though. We had 30 mph winds when we got off the water an hour ago. They're calling for the same tomorrow...ouch. Nice job on the browns and salmon...I wish I was fishing on the Bank Reef in the middle of July right now. duckfish |

Three boats hardly constitutes a Rendezvous. We may not even go thru a case of beer. Come on folks--Let's get fired up! |

There are a minimum of 4 local boats that will be attending, and a strong possibility of 4 more. About 2-4 people per boat. Brian |

Well, after keeping an eye on this topic for a while, I am sad to say that we will not be able to attend. Deb and I have decided that we are going to move so my newborn son can grow up around his grandparents. We were definitely looking forward to this trip, too. Things are getting so hectic now, I don't even know if we will able to get one last trip to the Door in at all! And I already missed the NorCal Rendezvous, so I guess I'll have to catch one next year! More people need to weigh in here as the date is fast approaching, and by the experience of last year it will be tough to get slippage. Don't put Quinn or Brian through that (like we did) again. They put in enough effort last time to not have to be burdened with another headache. From someone who knows how fun this trip is, I urge all of those who can to get off the fence and sign up! |

I'll bring the beer. I can bring a sampling of the local breweries. I will round up an assortment of ales. Or how about a barrel? What ever the host recommends Since Miller was sold this morning I can't guarantee I will bring any Lite. Don't worry duckfish,I'll do Milwaukee proud. |

Mil- Did you get your boat in yet? The reason why I ask was I was in Sister Bay today finishing up the cable project at Yatch Works. I saw two Whalers there and I was wondering whether the blue one in D-10 was yours. Just wondering and drooling. duckfish |

I keep it trailered and safe in my garage in Milwaukee. Desert Tan 95 Montauk. How is your rig coming along? |

Mil- It's coming along very slowly. I should be done with it by the end of next week though. Had a problem with my new steering cable and my old motor getting along. I have to go to the Twin Cities this weekend and I won't be able to reply but I think I might go and check out our friend over at Boston Marine! duckfish |

Well boys I took my boat out for the first time this year. The engine started on the second try! (Not bad for a 69) The no feedback steering system works perfectly. That is the best $180 dollars I ever spent. Well it just got me even more excited about boating this summer and the rendezvous. I had to tell someone. duckfish |

I can now report that unfortunately I will not be able to make the event this year, and will miss seeing everyone from last year. The combination of a late 4th weekend, and an early date for this year's event have resulted in the conflict with my long planned trip to the British Columbia coast, and inland passage cruise. But we will be making at least one trip up to the area, and hope to be able to see some of the Ephraim & Sister Bay people. |
