You can count me in. I will be heading up early on Sat AM. I will just be staying the day and shouldn't need a slip for my Montauk. Again, if I can bring something just say the word. It will be myself and maybe my girlfriend. Thanks ~mw

Patricia and I are in.

We are arriving sometime Thursday; departing sometime Sunday.

Well, I can't hide. And now that Outrageman has a new Whaler the pressure of dragging him along is off my back. So sure, I'm in. I just hope I don't have a problem with traffic!

Hello everyone,

The time for the Door County Rendezvous is fast approaching; July 12-14! I wanted to get this notice out so that we could have a plan of attack. Weekend schedule is as follows:

Friday 7/12 - Get here and get settled.

Saturday 7/13 -

9:30 am - Breakfeast @ Al Johnson's in Sister Bay (across from marina. Has grass roof with goats)

12:00 Meet in your boat outside the Stster Bay Marina for water tour of the area to be guided by Quinn Brennan and myself, ending up at Chamber's Island where we will drop a hook and raft up. Bring your own refreshments and lunch.

6:30 - Party @ my house. More than enough food will be provided, but BYOB.

Sunday 7/14 -

9:00 am - Run to Washington Island and/or Rock Island weather premitting.

Disband...

As I will be providing the food on Saturday night, please RSVP via email no later than Wednesday 7/16.

Please pass this email to anyone else you think might want to attend, but you think I have missed. If you have any questions, please email me or call me @ 920-854-6867. I will provide directions to my house on Saturday during the raft.

I will have the Ephraim FD Water Rescue Whaler out and about making sure you all behave :)

Thanks,
Brian

WOW!!! Things sure have a way of coming together at the last minute! We now have RSVPs for 11 boats and 32 people, plus the possibility of 3 more boats and 12 more persons!

Thank you all for your RSVPs, this will make things a lot easier to plan.

How are the winds up there? I was out off of Milwaukee last night and she was rockin! 13 to 20mph east/northeast. 3-4 footers.

Thanks again Blazers for showing us a great time. (although I still have heartburn from those bacon brats) Saturday could not have been better. I hope you had a fun cruise on Sunday. It looked like more of the same weather! It was great to meet all of you. Next time I want another turn on the tube!~mw

We also had a great time. Sorry we had to bug out so quickly, we were Sherm's ride back to the Marina and he had a long, dark ride ahead of him.

Thanks again, Brian & Kate, for your hospitality. Next year, we're taking a week off--we didn't want to leave on Sunday.

Don't forget to join us August 2-3 in Bayfield.

I would love to do this again next year. Maybe if there were some that could come several days earlier, we could take a long overnight run to the north (like Gladstone or Beaver Island).

On a seperate note, I just came back from driving a Hinkley 29' CC. If I can just come up with the $250k to get it bought I may be looking for another rendezvous to join.

I am seriously considering selling my wife and kids to pay for it.

Have discussed the Door County Rendesvous with my father in law and he and I would like to "hook up" for next years event. He is in Sturgeon Bay and I would trailer. I know it is a long time out but if you have dates already, I'd appreciate it. Would love to show off our boat and see others that are in the area.

I will actually be in Indy during that time. Not to mention I have a shot engine on the Bertram, and I don't think that the Dauntless would make the run to Escanaba...

Brian

bdb posted 09-07-2002 10:21 AM ET (US)     Profile for bdb  Send Email to bdb
What Outrageman means to say is that the only way he'll run the Dauntless to Escanaba is aboard a frieghter.

By the way MW, if you think Ole Harry is running a Montauk to Escanaba in the middle of October, you're nuts! However, to show my support, I'll monitor you on the radio so you can keep me abreast of the voyage.

Harpoon, already in long-johns, Harry

I could be interested in a Fall weekend trip in Door County.

Larry,

My engines are closed cooling. The starboard one dumped its coolant into the bilge. The rest is history. Quite an argument for twins!

I hope that when you and I ran to Sister Bay this year, that you still hade something left :)

Dave, say it ain't so!! Don't shrink it yet. It won't get cold until late November. Last year it was 50 degrees over Thanksgiving.~mw

I'll buy your first 5 rounds if you delay the shrink for a week....

David Pendleton posted 09-11-2002 06:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for David Pendleton  Send Email to David Pendleton
Thanks for the offer.

It's not so much the cold, but beating the rush. 95% of the boats in my area are wrapped for the winter, and only a few outfits do the wrapping.

I'd rather do it early then be waiting on a wrap when the snow flies early.

Susan & I have the date set as a "tentative" for that weekend. I'm assuming the Sister Bay Marina will still be open, which is where I plan to be. I've never been up there that late in the season. Sounds like Mills canvas weather.

Weather permitting, I would like to do a run up to Rock Island for a picnic lunch and a little hiking around.

BDB & Eagleman. Will you folks also be around? Sounds like Brian Jr will be away.

Larry,

Better bring the extra thick sleeping bags if you are going to stay on board. You might even have to get a hotel room.

Brian

PS I am sure my Dad would love to hook up, just give him a call. I will be out of town.

I've done Washington Island/Rock Island in my 15 CC, but I launched at Gill's Rock, and saved a few miles.... If it's not too choppy, I s'pose Sister Bay would be ok. At least Al Johnston's is open in October...

Just got back from Montana, I still am planning on attending. We should probably keep the cruise destination on hold until we check the weather. Could be cold, could be 70 degrees. I will probably drive up Sat AM and stay the night. Once again weather permiting! Everyone stay in touch.~mw

Guys,

Up-to-date weather for the Door(nearshore and inland) is available on the Yacht Works website: yachtworks.net
You'll also find a live storm cam view of the bay. The same view I get looking out my work window (camera is mounted right below it).
This time of year the forecasts leave alot to be desired. Just asked the guys who had to haul boats yesterday a.m. Wind west at 25, pouring rain and 42 degrees. Forecast called for sunny and 60.
Anyway, I'll be hanging loose Saturday afternoon. For the morning I'll entrust the infamous "Harpoon Mystery" to Outrageman.

Harpoon, Weatherman, Harry

Well, I'm gonna show up even if it snows. (In which case I'll probably come down with "neon burn"). If the weather modifies our rendezvous, I'm sure we could find a place to meet and discuss "things Whaler" over liquid sustenance.....

BULLETIN!

Harpoon Harry here, reporting from the near-eye of the storm.

Leave the boats home boys. I mean Fuhgitaboudit. South winds tomorrow to 30mph, waves 3-4. Saturday gale winds 35+ and waves building 6-8. Swinging NW 35+. Low temps and t-storms, and maybe snow. Check it out at the web address I gave you above.

All this must have scared the snot out of Outrageman who suddenly informed me that he is packin' the wagon, calling it a summer, and tearing off for Portland Friday. Chicken.

However, stalwart and brave soul that I am, I will volunteer to sacrifice myself at some local watering hole, should the need arise.

Sincerely,

The Ever Vigilant Harpoon Harry. Saving boaters for over 50 years.

Weather or no...the liquid sustenance sounds like a good idea no matter what.
I'm pretty sure that it'll be a small group with the cold coming in...

Seriously...who's coming? I'm not going to make the hike to Michigan tomorrow night to pick up the Whaler and haul it 5 hours to Door County if only a couple of people are going to be there...but I am game for anything the rest of you fellas are up for. I've got the gear for whatever weather...but not sure 6 footers in my sport would be pleasant (But am happy to do a bit of wave jumping)

Unfortunately, I am unable to make it. But not because of Harry's weather forecast. The old 25 Whaler would have handled it. Going to miss picking up some of Charlie's smoked Atlantic salmon!

I was doing fine until that weather report... I don't relish 3-4 hours driving to pit my 15 footer against 4-8 foot seas. Just checked the newspaper forecast and it agrees with the above. I'm afraid that even the promise of good company can't convince me to make that drive, so I'm gonna welch on this one - much as I love the area. Since hope springs eternal, I'm not putting my boat up just yet. Fall fishing is just getting good.
Next year!
lhg posted 10-11-2002 05:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for lhg
It's probably just as well we're not going. One of the worst traffic pile-ups I have ever seen (on television) occurred this morning on I-43 at Sheyboygan, and the highway may be closed all weekend. At least 25 vehicles involved, and nine dead.
Buckda posted 10-11-2002 06:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
Saw that too Larry...would definitely make for a detour.

Well...I guess that settles it with the rendezvous...I'll be in the Lake this weekend, but on the opposite side - in St. Joseph...jumping the 3-6 footers forecast for that side. Going to be the last of the big lake runs for the year probably....going inland and south from here on out.

Anyone else who's gonna be out and about around St. Joseph, feel free to wave me down!

Well folks, at 8:40 (current time) the mess is just starting to roll in. It must be running late. It's somewhat foggy, wind is just starting to pick up, it's damp, cooling, and going to get cold enough to freeze tonight. But if anyone does come up, look me up in the phone book.

But don't look under the "H's"
