As to lake Erie, and 2003, a whole lot of fishing, some boating, a bunch of wine tasting, and maybe a rendezvous? Any ideas?

If you are thinking about coming to the islands, the best time is before May or after September. From June to September, a group of transient docks is almost impossible to find on the weekends. Availability may be better during the week. We are always up for a Whaler gathering, so let us know what we can do to help.

Jim,

There is always Catabaw Island State Park launch and the camp grounds on South Bass. We can raft Whalers and watch boyliners (mispelling intentional) sink! The only thing better than a sinking PWC is one of those boyliner (don't know the rules of the road) boats going down.

Middle Bass Islands new state park may be an option. Since the state bought the property, improvements are in the works. I will make a trip over and check it out.

The thing about the islands is the date. If it is early, or late, we can dock a Put-In-Bay. If it's the season we're sunk. I propose we go at off peak.

BugsyG,

Had my boat a Chafees Marina on East Harbor till old Kay Chafee died. After Steve sold out after his dad's death pulled out after one year of the coke heads the purchaser moved in, took a great family/fishermen marina and filled it up with rejects from Clevelands Flats (so much for venting). Still lokking for a marina I can be proud to take my 13 year old to, so I'm trailering. But that has it's benefits been to Geneva and other spots. If we do it off season my roomate from schools family has been on South Bass forever (grandaddy ran the steam crane that built the International Peace Monument and they are still there). They use Ladd's Marina (If you have detailed charts just east of public docks) might be able to get slips for shallow draft boats. Most slips are rented to summer cottage owners who my buddy (non whaler owner into Lymans) knows. We might get permission to use. There is also dockage at Crews Nest on the other side of public docks. South Bass has the park and it doesn't shut down when the sun goes down.

"Put an Island into your Life"

P.S.

Was busy last weekend killing Perch off Geneva. Da*n, when I eat Walleye I say it's the best eating in the world, but then I deep fry some perch, and swear that's the best. Guess I am just fickle, or can't make up my mind. That's a Yogi

Dive 1,

How about the update. Last I heard about Middle was the winery collapse/state buyout. Given the budget in Ohio does Taft have a pot to pee in, or a window to through it out of? They are laying off park personnel in my area. Got a buddy who is a self described Dive Nut sounds like you two ought to get together. He has limited Erie diving experience, but will talk your ear off on his numerous Cayman trips.

SCarlson,
Man did you bring back some memories. I worked for Kay in the early 70s. Mowed the grass at the marina, cleaned the dive boat after charters, pumped fuel, etc. What a fun place to work for a summer job.

I have not made it to Middle Bass yet. I will be in Salt Lake City next week, but I will check it out when I return.

I have dockage at my house that is avaliable for use during off season, but during the summer most of them are rented. If you need a dock for a couple of days on or off season, you can use my guest dock.

You can bring your buddy anytime to go diving. I know the locations of all the shipwrecks in the area. Don't worry about him talking too much. We will not let him use a full face mask with a radio:).

You can always find docking at PIB on any given weekend during the season. Go to the State Park docks (Oakshade Point, not the camp ground) always will be a dock at some point in the day. If not go to the old bardge next to those docks. You can always, always tie up there. $1 foot at the bardge over night and a deal can be cut for just the day. State Park changes a fee to dock 6am-6pm and over night if needed.

As for Middle Bass it is a great place to tie up for an evening. Very different and PIB. Almost no development. I wouldn't waste my time going to St. Hazards - it is a real dump.

Am very interested in Lake Erie rendezvous, especially for 2003. Almost complete with renovation of 73 OR 21; plan to repower next week with 2003 Merc 150 XR6. Renovation has turned out far better than original expectations. Years ago, I would boat over to South Bass park in my 68 Sakonnet (still have)from Catawba. Looking forward to walleye and smallmouth fishing up there next spring. I think an Erie rendezvous anywhere would be great. Keep me informed (I am in central Ohio).

SCarlson, I got out there, and it was ok..i fished with friends for 45 mins. didn't catch anything, not even a single bite. oh well. I was supposed to go to sand bar on saturday night, But didn't because everyone was tired and wind picked up. i brought the whaler out of the water for a week then they are predicting good weather for next satuday, therefore, it has been moved to there. So even though its out of the water, i can at least clean the bottom and wax it up a little bit

I went up to Kelly's Island a few years ago when Portage Marine put on thier Whaler rendezvous. Maybe they'll put another one on. We all stayed in Sandusky, and I even took the 13' over to the island! A bumpy ride, but I got the prize for the smallest boat! They had crab legs, and all the fixin's..a really good time had by all. I'd be willig to do that again! My brother has his Dauntless in Indy, and we'd love to come!Pick a date so people can plan...Regards,

Hey BugsyG, as we say in my business, tag, your'e IT.

You may not be old enough to remember the great Leroy Kelly of the Cleveland Browns. They tell an old story about Leroy. It was a playoff game, and throughout every they got into a bind, Blanton Collier sent in a play, that was basically "give the ball to Leroy". It was the final seconds, Browns out of timeouts, and down in the "Red Zone", and trailing, time running out. Blanton screams "Give the ball to Leroy", at which Leroy calls back, "But what if Leroy don't want the ball". The moral of the story is, give the ball to BugsyG for the Rendezous, but does BugsyG want the ball?

BugsyG,

Given this delicate time of year, (football season) I know I am getting on thin ice, but dare we invite our neighbors to the NW (you know go west till you smell it, and north till you step into it) to our rondezvous. Some of them do bath more than once a month, or so I am told. We might be able to civilize a few, is it worth the risk?

Well I made it back home. I should address a couple of issues in this post.

BugsyG:
If you are going to fish around Marblehead, you should contact me and I can give you some coordinates for the perch. You were only off by 1 mile on saturday. My friends were 1 mile west of your position and limited in 2 hours.

Money for rendezvous: It is my understanding that BW used to support the dealer endorsed rendezvous with gifts and monetary donations. I think the program was discontinued 2 years ago. Someone correct me if you have more pertinent data.

SCarlson,
I talked with some of the members of the Dive Team and we think that we MAY be able to set up the rendezvous for Sept. 2003. After all, we know the territory.

Everyone interested in Rendezvous:
We need input -- We came up with a few ideas, add to them or shoot holes in them at will.
1. Cookout - we can have this at a variety of places, but it may work out best at my house. I have enough dockage for 20-25 boats if we get a little creative. The Dive Team will take care of setting up canopies, tables, chairs, grills, etc., and handle the cleanup and tear down afterwards.
2. Poker Run - we can make up charts of the area with 5 or 7 stops to obtain a playing hand. The locations will be spread around the area so that everyone gets a nice tour around the islands.
3. Tour of Coast Guard Station Marblehead and their new boats.(this could be a stop for the poker run)
4. Tour of Marblehead Lighthouse to include walking to the top.
5. Fishing on Saturday, then a fishfry on Sunday.
6. Swimming, Snorkeling, Diving, on a shipwreck near Kelleys Island. The depth at the "ADVENTURE" is 6-12 feet deep.

I will now conclude this post with 1 request: We need your input.

DIVE 1,

I'm in! Very nice of you to offer to do the cookout at your place. Your tenative itinerary looks great.

A couple of questions.

1. Regarding time, earlier you mentioned before May or after September as the best times. Are you suggesting late September?
2. Regarding sponsorship, is it worth contacting Portage Entry Marine? Do they still put on their own Rendezvous?
3. Where would you recommend people launch? What are the fees and parking and how far to your place from those ramps (both by water and land)?
4. You mentioned dockage for 20-25 at your place. Can people dock there overnight, either on or off their boats? Any suggestions on places to stay (if not staying on boats) including campgrounds and hotels?

I'm in Dayton but if there is anything I can do to help let me know.

Thanks,
Barry

I would welcome any fishing coordinates. I just picked up my "new" boat this last weekend. After I get a few things done to her I may try to get up that way if the weather holds.

Jim,

Portage Entry Marine sponsored all of the previous ten rendezvous with the first in 1990 at Kelleys Island. I believe the next five were also held at Kelleys. The last four were held at the Huron Boat Basin. I believe Boston Whaler contributed to these events by way of BW merchandise, etc.,but Portage Entry was burdened with the majority of the planning, etc. This was quite an undertaking with anywhere from 35 to 50 boats participating. When the event moved to the Huron Boat Basin, the "charm of being in the islands" was gone and I believe Portage Entry just got tired of sponsoring this massive event.

Yes, Jim I believe the last (10th) rendezvous was held two years ago.

I'm in! Very hospitable of you to offer your place for the cookout, etc.

The biggest problem Portage Entry faced was where to dock that many boats for Friday and Saturday nights during prime boating season. The first few years at Kelleys were great, but each year we had less and less dock space for more and more boats. The last year at Kelleys we were rafted 6 or 7 deep! Also, the shower facilities there (I won't mention the marina) were the most deplorable I have ever seen in 12 years of boating/cruising.

Your itinerary looks good. I think the simpler everything is the better. Nothing too structured. This is really a time to meet and socialize with other owners and see and talk boats.

Let me know if there is anything I can help out with.

Steve

COUNT ME IN!!!!!
Its nice of you to offer the cook out! I will be in for that
1.) can we stay overnight at the dockage?
2.) How old do you have to be to be in a poker run?
3.) I will be in the poker run, but always remember the shoals and know your ways around if you are doing around the island
4.) whats the grand prize!! haha
-- I will let you know my boat name when I get it...i narrowed it down to a couple.

-- We are going to the sand bar again on sat. the 19th. To have a bon fire and cook out....I will be there probably from 8 ...(my whaler and a couple others)...and staying for 2-3 hours. Anyone is welcome to come!!!! please do!!!

DIVE 1 posted 10-15-2002 09:20 PM ET (US)     Profile for DIVE 1
Barry,
1. I think we should look at late September.
2. The last rendezvous that Portage Entry Marine had was at the Crews Nest on Put-In-Bay. I was thinking about contacting them but I have cold feet. I think that we would have a problem handling a larger crowd of participants. We think that a low key approach would be better for the first(learning) year.
3. There are 2 free public launching ramps in the area. Dempsey Access is 10 minutes from my house by boat or car. Mazuriks Access is 15 minutes by boat and 10 minutes by car. You can leave vehicles with trailers at either launch ramp. We can also shuttle people back to get vehicles and trailers as needed or you can even drop the trailers at my place with or without boats and then have your vehicles available.
4. Every boat that we can safely dock or raft at my place can stay the entire weekend(for free). I would not recommend staying on your boat at my place, we have no facilities or amenities at the marina. It is a small private boat harbor. There is a new hotel - 2 minutes from my house. There are plenty of other hotels and campgrounds in the area including East Harbor State Park.
5. I will try to post the current hot GPS fishing locations this week.

Backlash,
Potage Entry informed me 2 years ago that the rendezvous was a planning adventure, you never knew how many people would attend. This is why I have cold feet about contacting them and announcing a rendezvous. We prefer to keep it here where all of us can work out the details for OUR rendezvous. Don't get me wrong, I am not turning into a snob but my wife will not endorse a public "free for all" at our house.

BugsyG,
1. Read answer #4 for Barry.
2. I suppose you can participate in the poker run regardless of age, but if you are under 18 we will require a falsified permission slip signed by your parents, mug shots and one pint of your blood(don't worry, the newest EMT that barely passed school will draw your blood when you arrive) :) :).
3. We will give everyone a hazard briefing about the local area.
4. We will have to get creative.

Jim

I take back my comments about having a r'vous in Erie and being short of vessels. We may be short on boats, but not enthusiasm. If it works out for me I have a deep fryer that is great for cooking walleye/perch and french Fries. If you have a grill we can have a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" ala Jimmy Buffet. Someone pick some dates.

"I like mine with lettuce and tomatoes,
Big Kosher pickle and french fried potatoes,
Good God almighty which way do I steer,
For my Cheeseburger in Paradise!"

Maybe we could all go to the sand bar for a cookout too or something....Sand bar, is a peice of land that no on owns and that boats can anchor there and stuff...maybe that could be our swimming festivities.....

I have an idea, why doesn't a different person be head of what activities are for example: DRIVE 1 can be the head of a cookout....I could be head of the sand bar, Someone else could be head of the poker run....thats a suggestion!

As far as a date how about Fri., Sat. & Sun. Sept. 12th, 13th, and 14th. Next year Labor day falls on the 1st, so it would the second weekend after the hoiday. i have ulterior motives as my birthday is the 19th and my dad's is the 26th. No way I can miss my dad's as I'm one of ten and several come in from out of town. I'd be sleeping on the couch come the 10th anniversary of this upcoming rendezous if I missed my dad's party as it will be his 90th. As for the 20th I might be able to play on the "well it is MY birthday" and get away (with that I might be off the couch by xmas 2003). Well someone had to put a date in writing, even if for ulterior reasons.

Why don't we do it in spring or summer some time?
DIVE 1 posted 10-21-2002 11:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for DIVE 1
SCarlson,
I don't have any problem with the dates, but early in the month there are still a lot of people and boats here.

BugsyG,
Spring is a lot colder until the water temperature warms up. Summer is an absolute zoo around here, especially around the islands.

For Everyone,
We have been doing some investigating and found several marinas with weekend dockage that have restrooms with hot showers. If anyone wants to stay on their boat and have facilities available, we can provide the info. We have also been out looking at poker run stops on private docks around the islands. We think that we have located enough private locations so that everyone will get a nice tour of the islands. If we use public docks or points, everyone will pay a lot of docking fees to pick up playing cards. We have found the following private points: Johnsons Island, Kelleys Island, Put-In-Bay, Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Rattlesnake Island, Catawba Island, West Harbor, East Harbor. Some locations may have more than 1 stop, but we felt it was better to spread the points around. If anyone want to explore a little or stop and eat at one of the points, most have public dockage. Fishing is also a possibility during the poker run, we can provide info on places along the routes.

We will continue with our research.

Jim

Jim,
Is this going to be like a couple days or something? I could do it...I could probably stay on my 17, it would be hard but i could do it. Or in a hotel...If i stay on the boat, please make sure the facilities are nice! :)

I will do the poker run...I might have to get another gas tank though hahah! anyways whats on north bass? Isn't it dangerous around there considering the shallow water and the shoals? But regardless i will do it if someone else will come with me considering i have not been in that area with my whaler, but i have with the big boat.

Could you please be more specific about the places...like put in bay, do we have to dock and pay for it or will there be a boat there or something that we pick up a card at?
Approx. how long will the run take?

I still say after the poker run, maybe we could go south of east harbor into sandusky bay area and do the sandbar....or at night !!! wouldn't that be a smash!!

And who is in totally in charge of this...like with the poker run?

DIVE 1 posted 10-23-2002 11:20 PM ET (US)     Profile for DIVE 1
BugsyG,
A rendezvous is usually a week-end event. Some will come earlier and some will stay later.
You will not need to stay on your boat. You should be able to easily commute back and forth across the bay. My house is 5 minutes from the sandbar. Our boat harbor adjoins Marina Restaurant.
We can help you with an additional fuel tank and a navigator for the poker run. There is a ferry boat dock at North Bass Island and plenty of deep water.
Regarding the pick-up points for the poker run, we know enough people in the area with private docks that you will not have to pay for dockage. We are thinking of putting special marked containers at each point. You will need to tie up to the dock, get an envelope from the container, and continue on your journey. We had DIVE1 out on Monday and Tuesday night and found plenty of good points for the poker run. This is not a speed race, the best poker hand wins, so you can pooch around all day to collect the cards. We think that the poker run would take 3-4 hours with no extended stops and everyone would get a nice tour around the islands. Oh almost forgot, we made the run in DIVE1 in 23 minutes :)
If you can get over to Marblehead on Saturday, we will be at James Park for the Crime Fair. Stop by and we can discuss some ideas. Just look for DIVE1 at the park.
