Anyone interested in an Apostle Islands / Bayfield, WI rendezvous for late summer? After reading about Jimh's trip (http://continuouswave.com/sail-logs/up1998/) and last year's trip organized by David Pendleton (http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000164.html), I am planning a week-long camping trip in that area with a couple friends. Could this become the "Great Lakes Rendezvous" that JimH mentioned in that last link? Suggestions, ideas and dates are welcome, but I was thinking perhaps in August when the weather is best and the black flies are least. This would be my first time "organizing" (or even attending) a rendezvous, so any "co-chairperson" volunteers are welcome to lend information and ideas and their experience. So, any takers? If we can nail down the date pretty soon, we can book the best rooms / campsites before the masses start filling up the availability. |

I was toying with idea of planning another AI rendezvous. We had a great time last year in Bayfield, but the turn-out was miserable. Only two other boats besides mine. At one point, I had a emails from a dozen or so folks that wanted to attend - all no-shows. Patricia and I travel to Bayfield several times in a summer, and would do so regardless of a rendezvous. Pick a weekend, and chances are we'll be there. I know the area very well and can give you names and phone numbers. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore provides some of the best boating in North America, in my opinion. I can't believe Whaler owners aren't lining up to boat here... Regards, Dave |

Hi Dave and Patty, Happy New Year!!!!! Jackie and I have been waiting patiently , for months, for this rendezvous to be mentioned. We had a GREAT time last year. Dave and Patty were wonderful hosts. They made sure that we enjoyed Bayfield to its fullest. Lead on!!! Early August would work for us. P.S. The kids say HI!!!!!!!! |

I was wondering if this was going to come up again this year. I'm going to try my best to get up there this year. Last year I had just gotten my 18' Outrage and wasn't quite comfortable with it yet and it needed some repairs. And I didn't want to take my 13' Sport, I figured it would be a little small for up there, so I had to forgo the festivities. Dave, I probably hit your site a couple hundred times last year. Anyway we could tentatively lock in a weekend. I wanted to sit the wife down with a calender and start blocking in for the summer. Mike |

Gep - That's what I was thinking - lock in a weekend early before the "social calendar" fills up. It is quite a hike from Chicago, so I was planning to camp out for a few days before / after any rendezvous to make it worth the long drive. I was also thinking August because it seems to be the best chance for good weather. How about we make tentative plans for the weekend of August 16&17? Or does starting it on the 17th sound better so people can kill a day ont he 16th driving up? |

I'm glad people are showing an interest in this now. Classic71 and I had a great time last year. I realize it's early. I started the Rendezvous site about this time last year; I think I'll wait a bit before putting it back up this year. As I said earlier, Patricia and I are up there often. Pick and weekend and we'll go from there. Here's one approach we and our friends use choosing a time for activities. We pick what weekends are available for the activity. Anyone interested in attending replies indicating what weekends work and what weekends don't. The weekend with the most votes is picked. It's less like herding cats that way. In my opinion, the best times to visit Bayfield are July and August. With this in mind, let's just say the following weekends are potential candidates: 07-12 Don't forget that there is bound to be another Door County Rendezvous during this time (well worth attending), some relative of yours is going to be getting married, you still have to paint whatever it is the Wife told you to paint last summer, etc., etc. That being said, we should pick a deadline for the decision and discus until then. Because Bayfield is a summer destination for many, it would be best if we had arrangements and reservations made by Memorial Day. Dave |

David - Thanks - I think this will help and is an excellent idea. My votes (in order of preference): 1.) 8/16 But will remain flexible as the Apostle Islands are a definite must on the "places to visit in my Whaler" this year. I agree with the deadline idea as well. Since we will need to book hotels, etc. by Memorial Day - we should probably set a deadline a couple of weeks before then so that people who only visit the site occasionally but who want to go will have time to see the final decision (regarding date) and still get their reservation in by Memorial Day. How about May 5 as a deadline? Thanks, Dave |

Apostle Island rendezvous still sounds like a great idea to us. I'll watch the dates we'll be there if the dates work for us. My wife is an R.N. her work schedule makes it difficult to nail down a specific date 6 months in advance. Thanks, Eagleman |

I think an early May deadline is fine. Anyone wishing to attend after preliminary arrangements have been made will just have to look a little harder for accomodations. There are lots of places to stay and they all get busy, but it's not impossible. Dave |

I've definitely been thinking about it. My votes for weekends are: 1)8/16 These two are after we wrap up the offshore racing (sailing) schedule for the season, and before we get started with fall racing in Duluth. If the timing works out, I am planning on taking the big boat over for a long weekend and have my wife tow the whaler. I'll keep checking back to see how the schedule shapes up! -WS |

Otherwise, you're on your own regarding lodging and slippage. It's never too early to discuss this stuff. Some folks will be driving many hours (myself included), so it's worth thinking about now... Eight votes cast so far, as follows: 7/26 - 1 As GEP did not have a preference, I counted his vote as one for the majority... As buckda referred to earlier, we have a month to get things together. I spoke to Ron at the Bayfield Inn this winter, and Phil of the AI Marina at the Mpls Boat Show, and they both recommended we book early to avoid complications. My experiences would support these recommendations. Dave |

I moved to Prairie du Chien a few years ago. I am an original "owner" of a 1970 13' Sport which has not been on the water for about 12 years due to 6 changes of loction during my park service career. My dad purchased it for me - trusting that a 13 year old and a 40 HP Merc would survive into adulthood. I have the boat (with a new engine finally) just about ready to get back into the water, and a sister-in-law who lives in Ashland. Whatever weekend you decide to get together, I'll try to attend. We are planning an August visit to Ashland - with no specific date set yet. The boat spent its first 15 years on the Barnegate Bay, New Jersey. My back still aches, and I am not looking forward to meeting lake Superior on a rough day. Regardless, look for a new face to participate - bumpy ride if necessary... |

Not too many others have wieghed in on the date, so I'm planning on the 16th. If you are planning to attend, would you like to make your own reservations, or would you like me to call and try to arrange a group discount? Ken_B & rjbauer, your 13's should be fine, but the (over-water) distances may present a challenge... Dave |

May 5 is the deadline for you to submit your vote. On the 6th, we should work on scheduling reservations, and working out additional details. Right now, David Pendleton is right - it looks like the 16th has it...but to be fair, we should wait until the originally stated deadline. I'll be in a 15, so if you have trouble in your 13, you and I will be "in the same boat" so to speak. Hopefully, the weather and water will be cooperative. Dave |

Okay, here's what I have so far: The Bayfield Inn This hold expires 12 May 2003. Mention the Whaler Rendezvous when you call to get a room from the block. Because I'm not entirely sure who will be attending, I only blocked 6 rooms. I realize we may need more, and chances are fair that more are available. Calling early is your best bet to get what you want. I'm waiting for a confirmation on the slips. I should have more by later this afternoon. Let me know if anyone needs anything else. Dave |

Just got the call regarding slips: Apostle Islands Marina This hold expires 12 May 2003. Mention the Whaler Rendezvous when you call to get a slip from the block. I am slipped on 'A' dock which has great parking lot access. Not all slips in the block are on 'A' dock, so call early to get what you want. Marti handles the reservations, and is not always available on Sat/Sun. She recommends calling on a weekday. Dave |

I told him to go ahead and remove the block (which is what he was going to do anyway). I felt like a jerk as for tying up 6 of his rooms for a week, only to have two of them reserved. I didn't put nearly as much time and effort into this as last year. All I did was make a few phone calls, really. David - I understand your disappointment and frustration, and thank you for taking the time and effort to try to organize a group rate for us. The owner of the Bayfield Inn can't expect that you control the actions of others, that's why he only held the rooms for a week. He's probably been through it all before. When we see him this summer, I'm sure he'll understand the situation that forcing people on this forum who have expressed an interest in lodging there to reserve a room by a certain date is beyond your sphere of influence - I'm sure it will be no big deal for him. That said, as a courtesy to David for his efforts, the rest of the group might think about mentioning the "Boston Whaler Rendezvous" when reserving your room, so that a attentive innkeeper might realize that we will in fact, be giving him some business from this event...just something to think about. I'm looking forward to this trip and checking out everyone else's boats. Dave |

FYI-My wife & I are tentatively planning to come up for the weekend rendezvous with our 13. It is our anniversary weekend, so the "boss" gets to be in charge. If we do stay in the Bayfield area, it will either be with "whalersailer" & his family onboard their sailboat or my uncle who just built a new place way up on the hill in Bayfield. I appreciate the planning & setting aside the rooms, but we are not planning to use them at this time. Hey Dave I just made reservations at the Bayfield Inn and Marina today!!! there was no problem and I did mention the rendezvous and got the rates you quoted. Its not too late for others!!!!!! Paul is having a hard time agreeing to bring the kids along for this weekend. He says 8 hours in the suburban is too much for two days and then another 8 hours. I am going to try to change his mind as I know the kids would get a kick out of all the island hopping, caves and Lighthouses. They love to climb lighthouses Dave, they can doo all your climbing for you. Well I can hardly wait for August. (see you in the door in July) Jackie |

However, we are planning to attend and meet you folks. I will be staying with relatives in Ashland and will trailer my 13' sport up from there. We should start thinking about an itinerary. Last year we ran out to Michigan Island and visited the two lighthouses there. It's a relatively easy run, but the cement pier at the island is exposed and can get pretty wild. Devil's Island also has a lighthouse, and some spectacular sea caves. JimH has written a bit about his visit there somewhere around here. Dig around and give it a read, it's a very good description. Devil's Island is a good long run from Bayfield, and the lighthouse is a two mile hike from the pier. It shouldn't be a problem for the larger boats, but the smaller boats may want to launch from Cornucopia and complete the crossing. There's also the Raspberry Island lighthouse. There aren't too many beaches. Those of you bringing kids may want to prepare them for 60 degree water. Just some things to think about. Dave |

Seven hours on the road (returning from the DC Rendezvous) left me a bit confused, Cornucopia is quite a ways from both Bayfield and Devil's Island. I was thinking of Russell Park, the location of the Park Service headquarters. Sand Island is also an option (for a destination). Dave |

I have spent quite a bit of time in the Apostle Islands and my favorite is Stockton Island. Great dock space and some great beaches. One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen is Julian Bay on Stockton and it is easy to reach. Devil's Island can be a tough haul in a whaler unless it is flat calm. |

60 degree water is generous for Lake Superior, even in August - perhaps in a sheltered bay on a calm day. Current temps 2 feet below the surface at 3 different open water locations as reported by NOAA are 44*, 38* and 38*. Here is a link too real-time weather data from the Devil's Island light: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=disw3 This is from a bouy in open water about 50 miles NE of Devils Island - this includes data on water temp and wave height. |

On the Sunday after last year's rendezvous, my fishfinder read 70 degrees 1' below the surface between Manitou and Oak Islands. The water was like glass and we decided to stop for a while, drift and relax. I was able to coax my friend into the water, and after a dive off the bow, he discovered the real truth. After which, we all had a good laugh. I've seen the data from the NOAA bouys, but it's a little different in and amonst the islands. I don't think anyone plans on bringing the kids out 50 miles and throwing them over the side... No matter where you end up, though, it's still going to be cold. At any rate, do we have a final headcount for this year's attendees? If you're reading this and you plan on attending, please let me know what your plans are. Dave |

Okay..I just got my final permission from work to have some time off. I will be traveling up to Bayfield on Friday the 15th - arriving around 4 or 5 PM and am staying at the Bayfield Inn. You'll know I'm there cause I have a gold Ford Explorer with VW Jetta Guards (Similar to brush guards, but I live in the city where no brush grows...but the guards do wonders fending off all the daddy's little girls with VW Jettas who can't parallel park without ramming into the car ahead of and behind them), towing my 15' Sport. By the way, if your daughter drives a VW Jetta and lives in Chicago, could you do me a favor and teach her how to parallel park?! See you guys there..I hear Eagleman is considering making an appearance in his 25 Revenge. (Come on Russ!) |

So....what's the head count look like? I will be there with my new 17' Outrage. I'm undecided as to whether to come over Friday night or Saturday morning. When/where is everyone meeting? -WS |

If you are arriving Friday night, let's meet on the Bayfield Inn's deck at 2000. If you aren't arriving until Saturday AM, try hailing Tampico or the Whaler Rendezvous on VHF 9 or 16. Dave |

I will be coming in on Saturday morning and will be staying just for the day. Since we aren't taking the big boat after all, I didn't get reservations anywhere, and my wife is not up for staying in the back of the SUV with me and my son! Oh well, it should still be a pretty fun day. I will be launching at the ramp by the yacht club hopefully by 10 AM or so. I'm guessing that the Whalers won't be too difficult to spot. Also, we spent all day last Saturday (8/9) anchored off of Duluth with the big boat and Whaler doing committee work for the sailboat race. The water temp was 72° and everyone was in the water just about all afternoon. It looks like this weekend could be shaping up the same way (in the Apostles). I'm keeping my fingers crossed. There isn't much that's better than swimming in Lake Superior from a boat in deep water! -WS |

How about recreational defibrilation? I haven't tried either one (r. d. or swimming from a boat in deep water in Lake Superior), but I still tend to relate them in my mind. ;-) |

Yeah, that's a big part of what makes it so great: It's pretty rare when conditions are just right to do it! |

David Pendleton, Thought we would be able to make the Apostle Island Trip this weekend. However, our work schedules don't work out for this trip. Dave be prepared to run fast with Buckda and the "Fly'n 15". Have fun, |

Russ - Sorry you and Paula can't make it. I was looking forward to blueberry pancakes at the dock! Got the photos last night - thank you very much. I'll think of you guys when I cruise through Wisconsin on the way up. Dave |

One more time, so we're all on the same page. Meet on the Bayfield Inn deck at 2000 Friday night. It is there that our Saturday destination will be determined. Any plans for dinner Saturday will also be discussed. If you are arriving Saturday, you can call the Bayfield Inn and ask for me (or anyone else who's name you know), you can hail Tampico or the Whaler Rendezvous on VHF 9/16, or if you have an FRS radio I monitor 13-11 while around town, also. At the very least you can hang around outside the Bayfield breakwater and look for our departure. Weather outlook is good. Dave |

I just finished uploading some pictures from the Apostle Island Rendezvous. It was nice meeting all who attended and look forward to next year. I hope the weather next year is as good as it was this year! Maybe I'll have a new engine by then.

Looks like you all had a great time! How cold was the water? What happened to Dave Pendleton's motor? And doesn't Buckda just get around with that 15?? I hope I can manage to attend one of the Apostle Island Rendezvous if you guys put together more of them- kingfish |

Kingfish, My cohones are still hiding somewhere. I don't think anything happened to Dave P's motor but I toasted mine. Buckda and I went out early Sunday morning to let Buckda drive my Outrage as I think slamming his tailbone in his 15'er has taken its toll, We got on the south side of Madeline Island about amile form shore and were jumping some waves and I heard the engine make a funny sound and that was about it. Some guy came by us asking if we were alright and he ended up towing us into Bayfield. I put it on the trailer and that was the end of it. We were leaving that morning for home so it wasn't that big of a deal. I didn't like my wifes comment when I got back to the hotel, which was something to the effect that the boats on drydock, so now I can concentrate on getting some work done around the house. Ouch! Mike P.S. Don't let Dave drive your boat :) |

Reminds me of that Arby's commercial where the oven-mitt realizes he doesn't have a nose--or ears. What? Where'd it go?!! Ahhhhh!!! If I did have an outboard, Buckda would have just blown it up anyway... The water was exceptionally warm, and also exceptionally calm, even on the windward side of Devil's Island. It was uncharacteristically warm that weekend. Downright hot at times. There will be another AIR next year, and you would be welcome. I too have some pictures and I'm trying to get the rest from Paul (Classic71) so I can post them. Dave |

In my defense, I believe that Yamaha had spent some time in Davy Jones' locker.....And I was not running at full speed. Play nice guys, or no one get's to drive the 15 either! (Either that, or I'm smuggling Cheet-O's on board the Conquest. Don't make me get up! :) Gep - I thought I was doing you a favor...you wanted twins, right? Water was approximately 68 degrees...hit 70 in Bayfield...but it was somewhere in the mid-90's air temperature...so the water felt wonderful (though "refreshing" when first jumping in). Great trip, I can't wait to go back and catch the rest of the lighthouses. Dave |

OK OK... Maybe it wasn't Daves fault, but he was piloting the boat and in essence that made him the Captain, which in turn means anything that goes wrong with said vessel is his fault, right? Dave, I meant twin 25 year old women, not motors. :) Truthfully, I don't know what I'm going to do at this point. I'd like to stay with Yamaha so I don't have to switch out controls, but I really want a 150hp engine, but I don't want to hang a 4 stroke off the transom. Then I'm into moving batteries and what not. Mike |
