Well I'm going to try again..........anyone interested in a summer rendezvous? This year it has to be more organized with telephone numbers and a rain date. Last years weather put a damper on our get together.

Only reply if you are seriouly going to attend. Last year there were lots of replys and few shows. The site of last years rendezvous, Griswald Point located on the tip of the Connecticut river, (5 minutes from the boat trailer ramp) was very good with calm beach for landing your boat on one side and Long island sound 30 feet over the point.

Look forward to hearing serious responses.

Maybe we could convince Jimh to take a trip to the east coast. Also Big Shot might consider taking a trip North to Jersey and join us for the day :-)

Hi Ray,

You can count me in. Hopefully the weather will be better.

You should check out the Boston rendevous, it sounds like it will be a good time. I just have to find a ramp near boston harbor.

If you have it at the previous location I will attend. I will be cruising over from Smithtown Bay, on the Long Island side.

As there doesn't seem to be much interest in this, I will let it die a slow death. If someone else would like to organize a Connecticut rendezvous, I would be glad to attend.

This is my first year in CT and I would like to see a rendevous happen. (hoping the snow melts before then)
Any tips or recemmendations for the CT maiden voyage of my 13 footer would also be appreciated.

Why Don't we have a rendevous in Hamburg Cove on the Connecticut River. It is always calm in the river and it is 10 minutes from the state ramp in Old Saybrook. Essex is just about 1 mile away with accomidations for bigger boats.

Well if you guys want to revive this rendezvous, then I need some help. Need other people to be involved. Last years site was great....beach, surf everything except for good weather. WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP ORGANIZE THIS ?
I would also like a consenses as to which month and which weekend. We could even camp out on griswald point....might be even more intersting.

NEED INPUT !!!!

Hi Ray,

My cousin camps out there often. Great idea for the adventurous.

What kind of help are you looking for?

I would like to see a huge turnout. Any member on this site in the CT area who knows of someone with a whaler should tell them about this website and have them sign up for the rendezvous. If the weather is good, Griswold point offers swimming, tubing and water skiing.

Lets see how much interest there is.

I think last years spot is ideal. Lets set a date. I will make up a flier and put it on every Whaler I can find. Maybe we can post info. at West Marine etc. Start on Saturday, sleep over for anyone who wants to. All welcome, even if they stay for five minutes, they will be welcomed with a thumbs up. Smiles a must.

Last year about 6 boats showed up do to the overcast weather. Each party brought their own lunch. That was about it.

Hopfully this year the wx will be nice so we can swim and ski.

We should also contact the CT Whaler dealers to see if they have any give aways we can give out to oldest boat, farthest traveled by water, nicest boat, etc.

You can bring your fishing rod, there is good fishing in the area.

Any other ideas would be great.

How about a Whaler Parade to start at 3:00 going up river. There is about a mile of no wake past alot of marimas. This could take a couple of hours with a lot to look at. It is not good to leave Whales beached for long periods. Plus there is something about watching one move through the water. We would be back in time for supper. I will check if pit fires are allowed. My assumption is they are not.

People have fires there all the time, whether or not they are allowed is another story.

A parade sound nice.

In order to have a parade we need about 20 boats. It would look stupid had we done a parade last year ;-)

Last years time frame was fine with me. I did not read any complaints about the timing. Lets set a similar date with the following weekend as a rain date. If using a rain date we will post at this site. Then we can start spreading the news.

Last year was Saturday July 27th. How about Saturday July 26th for this year. Ray, I want to help and I also do not to push my ideas. This is your idea you should be the comander that gives the final OK. What ever day you say is what it is.
respectfuly,

Ok here is my idea if enough people would be interested.

We all arrive Saturday around noon- 1PM at Griswald Point. We all bring food , drink blankets & tents & sleeping bags. Yes we plan on doing a sleep over If someone has a grill that would be great. We could do a nice bonfire at night. The Next day around noon we all migrate in parade fashion up to Hamburg cove to relax and then break up later in the day as we wish.

How does this plan sound?

I think the weekend of July 26th sounds good.....by that time the water should be warm enough to swim, ski & tube. This year I would need everone's telephone number so if its a rainy forcast I could call everyone and change it to the following weekend.

Before we go any further this will only work and be fun if we get lots of people. Don't want to do this if certain people say they are coming and then become no shows like last year. You guys know who you are....NO EXCUSES ACCEPTED THIS YEAR. ........DON'T SHOW AND YOU ARE BLACK LISTED ;-)

OK lets have a list of who is coming and each person will be deligated some responsibility.

You guys wanted this to happen so lets hear from you!!!

I think the two day plan is great. It will give those who work or have plans the ability to join in on either or both of the days. I am not shure if I can sell the sleep over to my family. My boat is not set up for sleeping, but I will be there for the two days. Hamberg Cove is a nicely protected cove. I don't remember a beach in there. We would need to raft together I think. Caves Island (just above Rt95 Bridge) has a large sandy beach with sand doons. We may have trouble rafting hunderds of boats together.;)
I am not usaly a big Emailer. Is it proper to just post my phone number on a open form? Or is there another way? Sorry for my ignorance.

My boat is 17 Ft. also can't sleep on it. My plan is to bring a tent & sleeping bags and sleep on Griswald Island. Very  protected on the bay side to anchor the boat overnight. Have a nice bonfire that night. I have a portapottie just håve to bring a grill.

Don't think we have to worry about hundreds of boats as of today's count it's only 9 boats.

I haven't camped out on an island sence I was a kid. I AM GOING TO CAMP OUT. I may be alone but I am camping out. (Now I need to find a tent.)

I was kidding about the hundreds of boats. I will be happy with the nine, but hope for more. I have all ready told some Whaler people and will get back to them with details.

Hi everyone,

I took the whaler out for its first spin of the year on Friday. I went to Griswold point and to my surprise it is more than half gone! I was there at high tide and about 150-200 yard that were visible at all tides is now under water at high tide, I don't know what it will look like at low tide. The winter storms have done a job on it.

If anyone from last year remembers the day, where we were is now gone. The entrance to the point is still there and it goes about 100 yards towards where we were. That is still usable and would be fine for our gathering, just a little more intimate.

I will post again when I get there at low tide.

Wherever you guys end up going- provide a map, I'd like to check out the procession. I think it's a cool idea. I'm on the L.I. side of the sound. How long would it take you guys to leave the conn. river and head across to the island.
That would be a cool site in Greeenport.

Hi, I live in Northport NY on Long Island but where is Griswald Point is it in CT.
I have a 13" whaler and if you guys are up to it in Northport there is a perfact beach we can camp out on called sand city there is a long strip of land that will block the waves the hole area is COOL.

Griswold Point is now an island on the east side of the mouth of the Connecticut River. If you have a chart that is a couple years old it may be shown as a quarter mile long peninsula running parallel with the Conn. coast line. In the last few years coastal erosion has turned it into an island. It has sandy beaches all around it.

The bad weather kept the whaker on the trailer this weekend, so no report on Griswold Point at low tide.

I will check it out fathers day weekend, I am busy next weekend and I will be at the Boston Harbor rendevous the following weekend.

I did make it to Griswold Point over the weekend at low tide. Found it very shallow but managed to get in with my 23 WA, although very nervously. There is still quite a bit of room there. You can walk across the washed out part at low tide. Outboard Whalers would have no problem getting in and out but more caution is needed than before. Although the area is considerably smaller, I would estimate room for 30 + small boats easy.

It is about 7 miles from Oreint Point LI. to Griswald Point CT. I have made the trip meny times in a 13 Whaler when I was younger. I was traveling rather light and had to pick my days. I think I was able to make it in less than 5 gallions of gas. That was in the 60s so I can't tell for shure. I was the guy with the headphones pluged into my 8 track seen any ware from Hartford CT to Montalk LI. Great Boat-Good Times

This weather is crap. I have been up in NH except for two weekends and they both rained me out. I just got the boat into the slip 2 weeks ago.

I have not been to Griswold point since my last report in early may. I am leaving for CT on Friday and will be there hopfully for 3 weeks. If we ever get any sun during those weeks I will check out Griswold point at various tides.

How about you, have you been in the water? I was going to go to the Boston trip, but the weather was to crappy for me.

I spent the last 2 weeks in Old Lyme hoping to get out to Griswald Point in the Whaler. My 1st day of vacation I hurt my back. Spent two weeks with doctor visits and stuck in bed. I have a protruding disk and I am going to a specialist in NH to find a cure.

That being said I have no idea how the point is at low tide. I also do not know when I can use the whaler.

Good luck with the rendevous, maybe I can make it .
