New guy here . . . Last year my spouse and I had an incredible, three night trip to Kice island. We launched at Goodland and spent three beautiful days and nights camping ot of our Montauk. Full moon, cool nights, no mosquitoes, good fishing plenty of driftwood for campfires and total privacy. There is plenty of room for 10 or 20 tents. Many of you have probably done this trip before. Anyway is anyone interested in trying to orgnize a "rendezvous"?

Dave,
Is Kice Island near Marco Island Florida? This sounds like a great trip. I will be looking forward to the details once you get them worked out.

Hey mang...

Do you put in much overtime on that job of yours? I'm sure it's hard work. :)

mangrovemansion posted 09-30-2003 02:28 PM ET (US)     Profile for mangrovemansion  Send Email to mangrovemansion
Howdy Jarhead... Very hard work. I haven't made much profit. I am still in the hole.

Inhernet... Yes, Kice island is just southwest of Marco. Cape Romano is adjacent to Kice island seperated by a channel from the estuary side to the gulf side. There are some old falling down fish shacks on Cape Romano. The debris and nails etc. make it unsuitable for camping (IMHO). Kice island is beautiful! I have never tried to set up a rendezvous. I am a new subscriber, new Whaler owner. so........ I don't really know the steps but I guess I can figure it out. We had a ball on the Stump Pass get-together and I am looking forward to the next one. It is a short boat run for loaded Whalers and there is plenty of room for camping.

Update - date; We will be arriving on Kice Island early Saturday morning, November 8. We will be heading home November 11. If anyone is interested in launching same time/place, cruising over together, etc . . . just let me know. Fishing and cast netting has always been good. Tents are pitched on sand so we bring extra long tent stakes and an oversize tarp to use as ground cloth. Mosquitoes were not a problem last time, no-see-ums were, only 30 minutes around sunup and 30 minutes around sunset. This would be a great first time campout for anyone with little/no experience. We may tow a couple of sea kayaks, to paddle the estuary A LARGE cooler is a great idea. I know most of you know the ropes but . . . frozen gallons of water last a long time in the cooler and then become cooking/drinking water. Plenty of room for charcoal grills, volleyball, badminton, kite flying, etc. Very safe, gradual slope, for kid-safe swimming - no drop offs. Lots of birds, fantastic sunsets (and sunrises) lots of photo ops. I hope some of you will join us (If not, we will just be naked the entire time).

I'm in. Just got back from Bass Pro and bought a tent. I haven't slept in a tent since the 50's. Set the new one up in my living room this afternoon! I think I can keep the land crabs out!

By the way . . . I will be bringing some cast iron Dutch ovens and skillets. It is fun to cook; lasagna, chili, biscuits, cherry pies, pineapple upside down cake, etc in a covered Dutch oven and great to fry fresh caught fish in a cast iron skillet. I am mentioning this because, on the evening meals you are welcome to share my chow. When it gets closer to the trip, it might be fun to get an accurate head count and have one - hobo dinner. Each person just brings one ingredient, of a dinner ie; fryers, rice, green beans, french bread, etc. (Suggestions; Chicken & yellow rice, Piej'a, Lasagna, BarBQ beans, seafood chowder, etc. Favorite/suggestions/dislikes??? The Head Galley Rat prepares the entire group diner with the help of a couple of galley slaves. Just a thought. I volunteer for where ever I am needed cook/help/wash dishes, whatever.

I know everybody will be well covered in adult beverage arena, ice tea and drinks for youngins.

I am psyched . . .

mangrovemansion: Count me in. I just moved back to Naples and have been doing too much of the domestic stuff. It is time to get back to the real point of life....Whalering.

I work on a "on call" basis and will have to check out the cell phone reception down there or advise the boss to hook up the VHF Base Station.

Don't know if I will camp or not...but will be around during the days...

Keep us posted on any thing you need....we may know someone to provide it.

We're in the north Florida area and would really love to come down with one of our Whalers in tow and join this crowd for one of their rendezvous. This sounds like a great one to try. I'm not familiar with the area though. What would be close? I have to ask since my wife will not stay in a tent. If were able to join up you'll no doubt hear my wife bellyache about me having sold the cruiser that we could stay aboard.

What kind of distances would I be looking at to commute to and from a hotel?

Whalerpoor, Kice Island is just south of Marco Island http://mapserver.maptech.com/api/GetImage.asp?fname=306592 and also close to Naples. If you do a search of these areas you should be within 30 minutes of a launch ramp. I know there is a launch ramp at Caxambas Park on Marco and also Goodland. http://www.co.collier.fl.us/parks/colliercountyp/beach/boatramps/caxambas.html Hope you can make it! Smitty

Yep..Nov.8-03 is the date. Taking your wife "OUT ON THE GULF" seems like a perfect anniversary date to me.

I have the interior hardware out of the boat and have filled the holes and sanded. I am going put the paint to her this weekend. My biggest concern is wheather the steering and controls will work out. The new center console is a bit taller, so I might have a problem with cable lengths. I am thinking postive and hoping for the best.

We should be able to make it to this one. Just a few questions since I've never been that far south on the west coast. Is there a secure? place to leave truck and trailer if we stay overnight? If we camp is it primitive or anything resembling a facility? How far is the run on water from a ramp to Kice Island?
Gonna pull the tent out this weekend- hope it isn't dry rotted!
We should be able to get there early saturday -mapquest says about 5 hrs so not too bad.

I got the OK!!!!!! Now, Big, since it's our 7th on the 9th and your 6th on the 8th, Tom said it would be really neet if we all can go. If Sissy still is bad with her back, we'll bring the "pretty boat" ;), and she'll be fine.
If it weren't for Whaler we wouldn't be celebrating anyway, so we think this is just really going to be a fun time. I got a Coleman stove for breakfasts and such, and a stack of firewood. Can we have a camp fire in the island? Do we need a state permit to reserve for the weekend? Also, I camp in Bristol for 4 days every year, so I got "gear". Just tell me what to lead into the truck and we'll be there. We would like to meet someone at a ramp who knows the waters, and caraboat over to the island. Take care,
Janis

Wonderful, wonderful . . . Happy anniversary in advance, you guys.

Yes, to campfire. We found enough driftwood to keep a small fire going at night. We are going to bring some wood too. No permits needed. No facilities. We bring our Porta-Potti and a couple of sunshowers to rinse off salt water.

Bring extra long tent stakes as you will be pitching on soft sand.

If I didn't already mention this, good bait fish for cast-netting and good fishing from the island and in the surrounding waters.

The full moon will be incredible . . .

See you all soon, David and Lucy

Biggie, Kice Island is about 6 NM from Calusa Island Marina at Goodland, Fl. the GPS cords. are as follows:

Calusa Island Marina
N 25.55.193
W 81.38.989

Blind Pass Kice Island
N 25.52.288
W 81.41.775

Marco Island Boat Ramp (No Overnite Parking)
N 25.34.746
W 81.43.035

I emailed you some Nav. Aids and anyone who would like a chart picture and road map of the area, just speak up and I will email them to you.

I ventured out to the island today to get a lay of the land and there is a protected beach at the Blind Pass point of the island that could handle 15 to 20 boats beached. The track you would take to the island is all protected waters. The water is shallow so make sure your DS is in working order.

I am waiting to hear back from Mangrovemanison as to where he plans to pitch his tent. He may know of a better site to meet up seeing he has done this before here.

Looking forward to being there. I still need to know where to put in at, could not find a web site or any real info on Calusa Island Marina. Do they have a ramp or overnight parking or any fees? Will anyone be meeting beforehand and cruising together? We will probably leave Orlando VERY early to drive down. If anyone is coming from anywhere north can maybe meet along the way and follow down?
Thanks for any info

This sounds like a good time! I would love to come down, at least for the day on Saturday. I'm in Bonita Springs, I guessing would be a about a 2 hour Whaler ride to the South for me. That would be almost all out in the Gulf for me, so if it is a relatively calm day and the wife says ok, we will be there. We have been talking about taking a day trip to Kice before, I hear it is really beautiful. I could always trailer it down to Marco. Hope to meet you all on the 8th!

I'm pretty sure we are going, but most likely just for the day on Saturday, my wife (Amber) said it depends on how much work she has, if she will go, she is working on her masters degree.

Still not sure if I will trailer to Marco or run the Gulf down. Either way, I'm really looking forward to it.

James: Based on the Gulf conditions today I would opt for trailering to Marco, it was a bit brisk and slow going because of the wind.

Smitty: Are you playing alone? If so give me a call if you wish to make it a twosome. I work permits, my game could use some pratice rounds.

Calusa Island Marina ramp fee is $5.00 and overnite parking is the same. If you can find Goodland, you can't miss Calusa Island Marina. It is on the right as you enter big town of Goodland. Anyone putting in for Saturday only can use the Marco County Park at the bottom end of Marco. No overnight parking allowed there.

Those heading south on I-75 want to take the last exit before toll (it is SR 951) turn right and go SW approx. 10 miles to Marco Island. Those comming to Goodland will enter Marco and proceed to junction SR 92, turn left and follow east , turning right to Goodland at the base of very large bridge like the one you went over when enteing Marco. Culusa Isl. is on the right about 1 mile down the road. Well marked sandblasted sign. If you miss the turn, don't worry, you can only go about another half mile before hitting water.

Looking foward to seeing you all,

Is there plenty of parking at Calusa Marina or should I call ahead to know parking overnight?

I think we will trailer down, the Gulf can be pretty rough for such a long trip. What time are we meeting up at the pass on Saturday? I'm not sure which ramp to go to... $3 for Marco and $5 Calusa, is Marco crowded on a Sat morning? If so $2 more is worth it for a quite ramp, any advice?

I'm looking foward to it.

Thanks,

I'm still uncertain. We sure want to get out and meet you folks. My current schedule is a mess though. I have jury duty for the week of the 3rd. I've done as many postponements as I can. I'm now at their mercy. I also have to fly to LA and possibly Baltimore the week of the 10th.

Somehow I would like to get down there over the weekend though. I'll let you know.

By coincidence - since everyone is talking about anniversarys and birthdates for that weekend - my wife's birthday is November 8th 19__ . I almost slipped and put the year. She'd be mad for me.

Smitty if you get "overwhelmed" by family, cruise on up to my joint.

Whoever wants to meet at my place, e-mail me for directions.

Whoever wants to meet at the marina ramp, do the same so I can e-mail you my Cell#. I would like to be at the ramp say 10:30am.

I just came across this topic while looking around this site. The trip to Kice sounds like a lot of fun. I live in Ft Myers and spend most weekends on the water. My brother and I have a little larger boats that we use and tow our Whalers behind us so that when we get to wherever we end up we have them to do our playing around with. I guess my question is to those that have been to Kice before. After looking at the charts its hard to tell if its possible to get a boat with a 3.5 ft draft into the back side of the island. I was wondering that whomever that has been there recently feels that this could be done?
WhalerGoFar posted 11-01-2003 07:44 PM ET (US)     Profile for WhalerGoFar  Send Email to WhalerGoFar
Austin Wood : You can take the channel into Goodland and anchor off to the side and return in your Whalers to Kice. It's only about 6 miles away.

I was on the backside of Kice at Blind Pass during low tide today. Wish I had taken a picture of Momma towing us off the bar....she did such a good job.

I does get shallow in and around there...go slow on low.

If this group needs anything that I can help with this weekend, please let me know. I am close by and can see Kice looking back over the south end of Marco. Our building is at 730 South Collier and is located on the posted Kice map almost exactly where the red line crosses the beach pointing to the Caxambas boat ramp. Our Montauk is in the barn back in Indiana but I have a friend with a brand X who may put in this weekend and if he does, will drop me by to say hello. I already told him we would have to beach about a half mile away. If not, when you come by Marco, I'll be the old guy waving from the 11th floor at Sandcastle I. I can spot a whaler a mile away. If you want to beach along Marco and have a cold beer here, we can do that. Mangrove- We are in the phone book, but I am going to E-mail you my cell number. If I don't see any of you, have a great time and be safe. P.S. The Sunday outdoor party at Stan's in Goodland (1:00-6:00) is a lot of fun.

Dave my one OMC does not have a powerpack, it has an ECM which is over $1000, so the answer is NO. On my 225 Johnson....again NO. On the 35+ other outboards I have owned...still NO. I do carry a screwdriver, BFH, duct tape, sparkplugs and wrench and a 1/5th of Blackberry brandy in case the above does not work. Most post 1980 engines do not have powerpack issues like the early models. I remember my Dad's 1972 100hp Rude would blow one about every other season to the tune of $300+ in the 70's. OMC corrected that pretty quick and they are pretty dependable.

Well gang, I am sorry to report the we will not be able to attend this event. The kids are to small to take along. The wife told me that I could not go alone on our Anniversary weekend unless I want to sleep with my Whaler every night. I love my wife alot and I sure am going to miss her.

All kidding aside, have fun and take lots of pictures.

Don, Dave here, Lucy and I would be glad to do a good bit of the child care stuff. We are well trained at entertaining kids in the outback (four daughters, seven grandchildren) . . . We really enjoyed hanging out with you guys at Stump Pass. We are both sad that you can't come.

Coleman lanterns, I am bringing two. The full moon is VERY bright as well. candle lanterns are great for inside tents and I am bringing a couple of Tiki torches to add a festivus touch and burn Citronella oil. . .

Remember no drinking/cooking water on island. Bring plenty.

Chris: You have the right gear...now just hold your mouth right and they will jump into the boat for you.

Biggie: I am short on digital camera's and long on Nikon and Rollie's...so you will have to wait a few days for my pictures. With the turn out sounding as good as it appears I will be bringing the wide angle lens in order to get all the boats in the shot.

I am bringin the 17', 96qt cooler(with oem cushion), 72qt cooler(with oem cushion), tent for 6 people, food ,beer, water, TP, beer, digital camera, beer, and a coleman Flouresent lantern. I will be sleeping in the boat under cover though due to my chainsaw sound effects known as snooring when I drink. I will also bring beer. Sunblock and bug spray are sandard issue on my rig along with flares and a horn. I have no running lights so I will not be doing anything stupid after dark like piling hunting.

Any Blue crab down there? I will also bring beer and ice, maybe some TeKillya....and plenty of smokes. Should get some gas too. Might even rig up the pate 27 tomorrow just to make sure I have enough gas in case I need more beer....and ice. I am also bringin the truck and trailer as well. Anything else? Maybe a doughnut? How about a hedge hog? OOOH cow tongue tacos!

Kice Kice baby!

I am bringing a 10 x 10 screened shelter for the group to use for whatever purpose they deem fit. The colman propane lanteren and extra ice. Camera , Film, Good Weather and Good sense of humor. Oh yea, and my first mate....Dasey Mae (Papillon).

If there is anything anyone needs and doesn't have...SPEAK UP...if one of the rest of us can help...I am sure we will.

Nick seems to have mentioned a slight concern as to there being enough beer.
We have so far:
Tent,Coleman lantern,stove,grill,portapotti,2 folding chairs and cheap folding table, film, camera, sunblock, bugspray, flashlight, raingear, 2 coolers (no beer yet), tp, clean undies and going shopping for food tomorrow.
Gonna clean and wash the whaler friday and pack all so ready to go.
I snore too but will probably blame it on that loud Suzuki idling nearby :-)

Big,
Take three less 12 packs of beer, ;) I just cant make it.
I just camped up at shell key Tuesday nite. Burned about 500 lbs of firewood. Gentel breeze on the water all night long. Caught a 5 foot blacktip shark at night. Just slept on a beach towel, shorts and a jacket. (by choice) no bugs, just a few ants...
Get the black solar showers at walmart. Shower before you sleep, the saltwater makes ya kinda raw down below by morning time. A pair of tweezers to remove sandspurs.
I have coasties Friday eve and Saturday morning. Important testing.
As for the no lights on your boat, pick up a bunch of those calume lights in variuos colors at Wallyworld or Home Depot.
Put up enough of them on your boat and it will look like a floating Tiki Bar, or just a few for nav lights for safety sakes. :) Make sure you have that spare full extinguisher under the console ;)
Bring some good binoculars.. Solar eclips Saturday from 630 till 10ish.
Talk to Janis about properly installing a compass. Im just too rigid and "anal" an get queasy with my factory compass being off between five and fifteen degrees. ;)
Actually, give my 3 12 packs to Mike. He is a man with great attitide and spirit. I wish I was there.....
What channel on the VHF are yall gunna monitor?
Ya never know who might make it down for a day on Saturday....I will hail "Boston Whaler"

Thanks for the kind words Pat, but Biggie I can't drink that much beer....sub with a few gallons of the white grape instead.

As to VHF Freq.....Pick one Biggie and we will go with it...no discussion.

Packing , Gasing and making a list of things I am sure to forget.

Later Gators,

Amber (my wife) said she will not be able to go, just way too much school work :(

Well here we are back in the confort of our respective homes. Where there is hot & cold running water, air conditioning, clean sheets and confortable beds. (Jamber you were the smart one....College Ed pays off)

It may be nice to be home but don't you all miss the sand, bugs and the sight of beached Whaler's at a very low tide. Don't you miss Big Shot bitching....the look on Janis's face as that nice big Poterhouse hit the sand, and the look of disapointment in Tom's for whom it was intended.

I want to say to all....put Judy and I down for the next time. We will plan on being a bit more prepared to spend the nite....at the nearest Holiday Inn.

We did get lucky with the weather....as it is blowing in from the North tonite with guest to 25 mph .

It was a pleasure to meet so many good, friendly and nice people with the same good taste in boats.

Thank you Dave & Lucy for the morning coffie and Janis for the sticky bun...You know the way to my heart.

For those of you who didn't leave for the dock when Smitty and I did.....hope you found your way back...before dark.

We got off of land about 11 or so and went south around the point to the abandoned houses. We then headed striaght in, easy to find. Bay/gulf was a tad snotty but Ok. We then had lunch at Stan's waterfront restaurant and listened to the band. Yanked the rig about 2:30 and was home by 5pm or so. Found the extra box of .22 ammo, you guys are lucky:) Damn winds were howling last night, the drive home was even a tad rough on the highway.

Yeah I was bitchin.....yes I am still itchin.

I passed Dave & Lucy at a Shell station, glad they did not spend another night.....glad he got off land as well.

Let's start planning the next rendezvous....March/April?

I was thinking East coast: Key Largo area, Ft Lauderdale area up to say Boyton beach, or Daytona/St augustine area. West coast: North/central in Tarpon springs/Homasassa area, or Cabbage key/Useppa area south of me but north of Kice.

Anyone going to bike week?

For those of us who were not able to make it, would you recommend Kice Island as a place to camp? Were the bugs a problem.? Would the wife and kids like it?
Jamber posted 11-10-2003 01:01 PM ET (US)     Profile for Jamber  Send Email to Jamber
I hope everyone made it back home safe and sound!

Thanks David and Mike for organizing the rendezvous.

I really had a great time on Saturday, it was really nice to meet everyone and see your Whalers. I just wish I could have spent more time with you.

Count me (hopefully Amber also) in for the next one. Janis and Tom mentioned the Saint Johns River in January, that sounds like it would be fun. Or Homasassa area, Cabbage key/Useppa area, like Nick just said, would be my vote.

Here is a link to the photos I took: [url]http://home.comcast.net/~jamber06/kice/index.html[/ur]

For anyone who was there, if you want the high resolution version of the photos please send me an email, I will gladly make a CD of the photos and mail it to you.

Man I am feeling insufficient on my shooting this weekend, but I did make a holy mess out of Brian's bait bucket;) Janis said she watched Brian try to bring back a bucket of water in the morning to wash something with and the bucket just poured out water as he ran up the beach. Said he looked like something from a cartoon.

Good Morning!

Well . . . I finally finished unloading our Whaler. Amazing what one of these stout little craft can carry. Lucy and I had a Ball! Very different, with all our clothes on :-). It was great getting to know some of you better. Interesting, brave, unusual, friendly, helpful, talented, curious, adventuresome people. Sorry about the bugs-"Bigs", et al. Really, they weren't as bad the last time we were on Kice. It was much cooler last time, oh well. We brought supplies for three nights and four days and wound up leaving a few hours after the rest of you. Wind kept getting stronger, sun kept getting hotter and we were lonely. We stopped at Cracker Barrel for a late lunch and then headed back to Port Charlotte. This morning, we are leaving on a Peace river cruise. Swim, fish and drink the rest of the Kice Island beer. I can't wait for the next rendezvous. Smitty, thanks for getting Lucy "sloshed". We had a great night under the full moon.

James, your photos were great, please send us a CD.P.O.Box 9224, Fort Myers, FL. blackbamboo@earthlink.net

Chris yours were great too.

Janis, I will be contacting you soon to order my "Florida Whaler" decals.

Happy veterans day, to all you Vet's.

Warm regards, David and Lucy

Hope all had a great Thanksgiving day! We took my parents to Lake Toho (tohopekaliga) for the afternoon and had a nice ride back in at sunset. Temp was in the 80's so it was nice. It is supposed to be in the 40's here tonight so I think any other boating plans this weekend may be postponed at least until next weekend.
Happy Holidays to all!!!!
