We are good to go for Aug 19-21; sign up sheets will be available soon. We are limiting our first year to the first thirty boats that return their sheets and see where it goes from here. Will be at Seaway Marina and we have dockage, yes, rafting required, for our event. More to follow and do plan on having complete info on the sign up sheets. Bear with us as we learn the rendez vous ropes and hopefully we'll all make this an annual event to remember!! |

Hello All, Time to regenerate this thread with only a little over a week until the Clemons Boats Boston Whaler Owner's Event....Has anyone made any firm plans on slips, hotel rooms, etc ? Where are people coming from ? I've been contemplating putting in at Lake Erie Metro Park in Gibralter, Mi. and making the run across from there, I still have to check the charts, etc to see what the distance is...anyone else in the Detroit, S/E Michigan area interested ? Lake Erie Metro Park is a nice facility, with great ramps, has it's own Sworn Police Department and is pretty secure, I'll be contacting them today to verify overnight parking rules, etc... I've never been to Kelly's Island before so let me know what you think... Pat |

Pat, If you don't want to make the run to Kelleys from the Lake Erie Metro Park, due to weather, etc., Mazurik ramp in Lakeside/Marblehead, OH is highly recommended. This is usually where we put in and is 4 miles from Kelleys. This is a fairly new state-owned ramp with excellent facilities and plenty of overnight parking. I was planning on sending driving directions to Kingfish, but may just post them here for anyone else interested. We will be staying on the boat. Steve |

Pat, According to my GPS, it's about 42 miles from Gibralter to the ferry dock (right next to Seaway Marina) at Kelleys - as the crow flies. Mapquest gives the driving distance from Gibralter to Lakeside/Marblehead as 86 miles. That being said, I think I would rather drive to the Mazurik ramp rather than take a chance by boat from Gibralter. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes (averaging 20 ft.) and can kick up in a heartbeat. While you may have no trouble getting to Kelleys, I would be concerned about the return trip especially in a Montauk. BTW, I just spoke with Seaway Marina and it is not necessary to call them about slip reservations - everyone registered for the rendezvous has slip reservations. Slip fees are $1.60/foot per night. When you drive down I would recommend using RT23 south to the Ohio turnpike. The road construction on I-75 between Detroit and Toledo is terrible, also 280 in Toledo has been closed at times due to road construction. Jim |

We have been making this voyage from Detroit to Kelleys for many years, both by auto and by boat. Pat, I would not advise you to try the Metro Park launch and make that trip across to Kelleys. On a good day, no problem. The thing is there are very few good days on western Erie and practically none that come back to back. The passage from Green Island around South Bass to Kelleys is always rough, regardless of the weather. Going around the north of Bass Islands is ok, but can be bad as well. Were I trailering I would take the ferry across and launch on the island. You can launch at Crafts 419 746 2254 which is on the same side of the Island as Seaway, or you can launch at the state park which is on the north side and either take the east or west side around. Crafts will also let you park your rig for the weekend as they have guest cabins and such. The Mazurik ramp is quite nice, however, you are looking at a 6 to 7 mile passage to Kelleys. Depending on the wind, weather and waves this is either a piece of cake or impossible in small boats. This weekend is also Homecoming. Pretty much fun in the small downtown area. Don't know if we are coming over or not, if we do it we do it will be in our Chris Craft will small whaler in tow. Have fun and be carefull. IMHO take the ferry and enjoy the ride across. Oh, BTW for those of you trailering from the MI area, I-280 is posted as being closed. However, you may take it to a small detour and be right back on it in a few minutes. Just follow the detour signs to Front Street take the South Front Street exit. If you can immediately get into the left hand lane you can merge right back onto the entrance ramp heading to I-280 Cleveland. If not, then just go down to the Sunoco station and make a U-turn. This will save you a bunch of time as most of the traffic assumes the by pass is closed and traffic will be light in comparison. Also, if you would like a nice drive get off I 280 at SR 2 (Oregon) and take 2 across to SR 269 (Marblehead-Erie Islands), distance of say 40 miles. Terry and Donna |

My schedule has now cleared enough that I will be able to attend at least Saturday and probably Friday night as well. I am unable to bring either one of my boats so I plan to take the ferry to Kelley’s Island to join the festivities and try and hitch a ride or two to get some “whalering” time. Like Kingfish I appreciate the heads up on avoiding the construction delays in Toledo, thanks Steve, Jim and Terry. -Don |

It's Sunday and our Lake Erie, Kelley's Island event went well. Food was wonderful and the weather was much better than we anticipated; only one little squall for 10 minutes on the lake which we handled in our whalers with ease. Bigger and better next year now that we have our feet wet and we'll keep you posted as we decide where when and etc. Thanks from myself and Clemons Boats to all who participated and all who helped sponsor the event, especially Boston Whaler. Class event - we all had a great time, and Clemons Boats really really worked hard, successfully, to restart the reputation of great annual rendezvous on Lake Erie. The registration was smaller than I expected...Where were you "local" guys? Moe, I thought you were coming, and was looking forward to meetng you! The good news for those of us who did go, (and who had a great time to a person, so far as I was able to determine), was that there was more stuff to divvie up betwen less attendees. I went home loaded with loot! The hospitality was superb, and I finally got behind the wheel of a Verado - and I can only say, Wow! Boston Whaler had a big presence there, along with John Ward, the preasident of Boston Whaler, the heads (I think I have that right) of design and of engineering was there, and they both spent a lot of time one-on one with us, really probing for deep insight from us, and sharing a wealth of knowledge about current and future Whaler directions. Van________ ( I must have the worst memory on the planet for names), who is the engineering guy, rode with me on Outré Saturday morning, and I saw that Doug, the design guy was riding with someone else in their boat, Later on, Doug took a number of recorded interviews with quite a handful of us. These guys truly do want to know what is in the minds of Whaler owners, and whether they are heading in the right direction or not. I couldn't have been more impressed. Thanks again Jimb, Clemons Boats, Whaler, Gary Finger (sic?) from the Pumphouse, Jim Biro, for the hospitality and ice in the mornings, and everybody else involved, for a terrific weekend (and Jim, I'll put that battery to good use). Looking forward to next year- John |

Hello All, So near yet so far away....After all the years I've spent on Western Lake Erie, I finally made it to Kelley's Island for The Clemon's Boats Boston Whaler Owner's Event....I can't believe I've missed out on all the places I saw this weekend. A great boating area all be it Choppy... Many thanks to all the folks at Clemon's for a job well done, at least 8-10 people from Clemon's (many from the Clemon's family) & Dive1 involved in all the activities at the event, going above & beyond to make sure everyone was having fun & taken care of, and who'd of thought I'd see the President of Boston Whaler ywice in two week's along with three of his staff? Clemon's is A Great looking, staffed, & Stocked Facility....The food was also above & beyond, thanks to Gary and His staff, as were the prizes...... Got to see some model's I hadn't seen first hand before, 25 Walkaround with twin Johnson 200's, a Whaler 27 with twin Yamaha's on an armstrong bracket, a 1974 Revenge 19. Like John I'm terrible with names the first time around, but I enjoyed putting names with faces and look forward to seeing you folks again soon....and as always, great to hang out & Whaler with Backlash, Memory, Kingfish again. I'll be back, it's only 102 miles from home, and lots to see & do by water....again, CUDO'S Pat Henahan |

I echo John and Pat's comments on this great rendezvous. Clemons Boats were the perfect hosts and held a very well organized and fun event. No detail was overlooked. This has to be one of the friendliest dealerships I have ever seen. The entire Clemons' crew were spectacular. These are truly folks you would not hesitate to buy a boat from. Excellent choice Boston Whaler! The food was excellent, thanks to Gary at the Village Pump and what can I say about the Lakeside Fire Dept? Jim Birro and crew were there aboard Dive 1 to offer any possible assistance and fresh ice each morning! It was nice to see John Ward again and meet Van and Doug from the factory. Boston Whaler is clearly interested in feedback from present owners and their participation in these events is most gratifying. As Jimb mentioned, the weather was much better than expected. The "little squall" occured when a group of us were making the run to Kelleys from Sandusky Bay Saturday afternoon. When the squall hit I actually thought the canvas was going to be ripped off the boat, but it didn't last long, and we all survived without incident! Thanks again to the crew at Clemons Boats. I too look forward to next year's rendezvous. Steve

Steve, John and Pat said it all Clemons Boat staff went above and beyond all expectations. Gary Finger was the consummate host as always and made everyone feel welcome to Kelley's Island. John Ward, Van and Doug from Boston Whaler showed a real desire to hear the feedback from current owners. Doug from product development rode onboard Memory Saturday. He was interested to see and experience any modifications made to the boat and know what features I liked as well as the ones I would change. Also, I have to mention the Blackened Walleye served as an appetizer at Saturday's lunch, the best I have every had. It was a pleasure to see old friends and meet new ones. I'm sure next years event will have many more Boston Whaler owners in attendance. |

John, Steve and Pat It looks like we missed a good one, but I hope you explained to the Clemons crew that 3 - 4 of the boats that should have there were preping for the Buckalew Expedition [ Isle Royale ]. The west end of our lake is shallow, waves can build and die fast, but the whalers can take it. Steve, I see you had the black welcome mats out for the rafters. Sounds like we missed a great one! John, we'd registered and were going to try, but classes started Monday at the university after a summer of the heaviest construction we've ever had, so I had to stick around here. I can usually get away in June, July, and even very early August, but as it gets closer to school, it's tougher. Hopefully, next year's will be a little earlier in the summer. -- |
