I've done this for the past dozen years or so. Saturday and Sunday, April 21 & 22, is the Bodega Bay Fisherman's Festival and blessing of the fleet. The Westside ramp parking lot is filled with booths offering food, drink, and all kinds of boating/fishing/environmental information; the Coast Guard stages helicopter 'rescues' in the harbor right off the ramp; and on Sunday fifty or so boats--mostly the commercial guys with their families--tricked out with pennants and goofy signs, balloons, strangely-clad seamen & women, assemble and parade through the harbor, then head outside toward Bodega Rock where flower wreaths are placed in the ocean to memorialize those who died over the past year at sea, and the boats are blessed with holy water (each year I've participated I've been pleasantly surprised that my boat hasn't burst into flames when this happens...hope I'm as lucky this year).A very fun and mostly joyous get-together, and a sorta curious local event that shouldn't be missed by Bay Area Whalers if you can possibly make it. Bring your cameras. Look for 'Strike 3' to be outlandishly dazzling in her colors, and maybe we can have an informal Whaler mini-rendezvous in Porto Bodega after Sunday's parade (or better yet, a couple of hours of salmon fishin' together in the afternoon if the fish are close by). If there's any interest here, I'll post travel information and further details. Tony I'll be scattering some flowers myself and thinking some pagan thoughts for friends and relatives lost over the past year, and for the memory of CW member Kawika.

Bump, for the first and last time. Man, you can lead a boat to water but you can't make it float. I can't believe there's no interest in this sorta goofy festival. It's a great chance for those of you who haven't visited Bodega Bay to check out our fine little harbor town (whose unofficial but very relevant slogan, often seen on local bumper stickers, is "Bodega Bay--a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem"). For those of you old enough to remember, this is the town where Hitchcock's "The Birds" was filmed, and you'll recognize many of the landmarks from that movie. You don't need to bring your boats to the festival, you know.Anyway...I tried ;-) Tuco |

Tony, I could be interested for Sunday. Sounds like a lot of fun. What is the distance/time from Petaluma. Can I stash my boat somewhere or leave it in Petaluma? We have a long way back. high sierra |

It's this month, not May, so it won't coincide with our NorCal rendezvous, HS, if that's what you were thinking. Bodega Bay is about forty minutes from Petaluma, west a ways and then up the windy coast road, Hwy 1. Sunday the 22nd is the best day, with the parade and blessing of the fleet.Tony |

A little brain fade on my part. Got to quit doing things late in the day. I'll still look into it. High sierra |

I'm definitely considering. Should know more next week. If I do, I'd like to take the Friday off so I can get down there and set up camp. -Adam |

If you decide to come, Adam, give a shout on channel 9 or 77 on Sunday (the day of the parade and blessing of the fleet). We keep our banana Revenge 19--a close cousin to your 'new' beautiful Outrage--in a slip in Porto Bodega, and I'll be down there by eight or so in the morning with my wife and maybe my partner Matt. If you want to coordinate more specifically or if you need travel info or whatever, my email address is wildelaw@comcast.net. Hope you can make it.Tony |
